The New Year that Never Came awarded in Venice

The Romanian film “The New Year that Never Came”, directed, written and produced by Bogdan Mureşanu, was awarded prizes at this year’s edition of the Venice International Festival, which ended on Saturday evening. The film won the FIPRESCI Award – offered by the jury of the International Federation of Film Critics and, respectively, the Bisatod’Oro 2024 award for Best Screenplay, offered by independent critics. “The film stands out for its ambitious and outstanding direction, its careful political vision, sophisticated and engaging storytelling, artistic balance and the exceptional casting”, the members of the FIPRESCI jury appreciated.According to them, the feature film culminates in a deep exploration of human behavior, influenced by the fear of political repression, shared by many generations who lived under an authoritarian regime.

For their part, the independent critics, those who awarded the Bisatod’Oro award, are of the opinion that Bogdan Mureşanu’s script sensitively illustrates a crucial moment for Romania’s history, interspersing, in an exceptional way, “the destinies of some distinct and strong characters , offering us, at the same time, an emotional story and a unique study of the soul, a true human comedy”. At the festival screening, the film was applauded for many minutes by a room of 1,400 spectators.

The debut feature film of the director Bogdan Mureşanu is a tragicomedy whose action takes place in a single day, before the anti-communist revolution of December 1989 and it stars, among others, Emilia Dobrin, Mihai Călin and Nicoleta Hâncu. In the film, there are also many references to what had happened in the previous days in Timisoara. “We make films with the secret desire to be liked by the public, but also appreciated by those who write about cinema, equally. Such an important award means more to me than an appreciation of the film. It is a sign of dialogue across borders. There is nothing bigger than that”, said the director Bogdan Mureşanu.

At the same time, Boroka Biro, the cinematographer of the film “The New Year that Never Came” was awarded with the Premio Autrici under 40 “Valentina Pedicini” special mention. The distinction recognizes the talent of an author under 40 years of age, for an outstanding performance in direction, script, editing, image, in a film presented in the Orizzonti, Orizzonti Extra, Giornate degli Autori and Settimana Internazionale della Critica sections. Boroka Biro is the first director of photography to receive this award, now in its fourth edition, under the aegis of “Venezia a Napoli. Il Cinema Esteso”. The New Year that Never Came is the second fiction feature film on which she worked as a cinematographer. (MI)

UKRAINE. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, gave the green light to invaded Ukraine to hit, under certain conditions, targets on Russian territory with weapons delivered by Washington – said an American official, quoted by international media. “The president has tasked his team to ensure that Ukraine can use US weapons to counterattack in the Kharkiv region (northeast, the theater of a Russian ground offensive – ed.) so that it can retaliate when Russian forces attack or they are preparing to attack them” – said the mentioned source, who asked to remain anonymous. The United States, however, continues to oppose Ukrainian attacks deep into Russian territory. “Our position on banning the use of ATACMS or deep strikes inside Russia has not changed,” the official said. ATACMS are missiles supplied by the Americans to Ukraine, with a long range, capable of reaching a distance of up to 300 kilometers.

WASHINGTON. Republican Donald Trump was found guilty by jurors on all 34 counts in the hidden payment case for porn star Stormy Daniels and thus becomes the first former president in the history of the United States to be criminally convicted. The verdict, which international media call historic and with unpredictable political consequences, will be pronounced on July 11 by judge Juan Merchan. It won’t stop the septuagenarian billionaire from running in the Nov. 5 presidential election against Democrat Joe Biden, even in the face of a prison sentence. Trump has been indicted for lying in the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign to cover up a $130,000 payment to silence actress Stormy Daniels about a sexual encounter she allegedly had with ten years earlier. Although the case is considered by some legal experts to be the least important of the four criminal cases facing Trump, it is the only one with a definite sentence ahead of the presidential election.

  • Measles alert

    Measles alert

The anti-vaccination campaigns, which gained momentum with the COVID19 pandemic, are starting to show effects. Romania, where the voices against inoculation are increasingly strong, especially on social media, ranks 5th in Europe in terms of the rate of measles infections and first in the European Union, according to the World Health Organization.

The WHO report also shows that at the level of the whole of Europe, the number of diseases registered this year will exceed that of all the cases reported in 2023 – over 60,000. In the first 3 months of this year alone, over 56,000 cases of illnesses and 4 related deaths were reported. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease, which has a devastating effect especially on the health of children under 5 years of age.

Over 16,500 new cases of measles appeared in Romania within a year, and 16 people died from this disease, the Public Health Institute in Bucharest has reported. Most illnesses were recorded in the center of the country and in the Capital.

The vice-president of the National Society of Family Medicine, Gindrovel Dumitra, told Radio Romania that the only ones protected against measles are those who have been vaccinated and those who have already had the disease. He also emphasized the fact that measles has no specific treatment and urged all parents whose children have fallen ill to see a doctor immediately. Gindrovel Dumitra:

“Once they have contracted the disease, there is no way to treat it with antiviral or antibiotic medication. It is simply just a supportive treatment, to help the body to overcome this event and at the same time we can administer a series of other substances that help prevent other related effects. That is why it is mandatory to see a doctor, precisely to try to avoid complications and implicitly death through the therapeutic means that we have available at this moment.”

Dumitra said that the current anti-vaccination trend was present in Romania and in the world even before the pandemic, but that it grew when some people who got vaccinated found that, after a certain time, their immunity to COVID19 decreased again. He stressed that the measles vaccine provides lifelong immunity. According to WHO statistics, almost 240 cases per 100,000 inhabitants are registered in Romania.

Last year, of the children under 5 who contracted the disease, more than 75% had not received a single dose of the measles vaccine. The measles vaccination rate in Romania was 81% in 2021. It was 86% in 2019, before the outbreak of the pandemic, and exceeded 90% in 1990. (MI)

In the same period, the police intervened in almost 30,000 cases of domestic violence. Criminal acts in the field of domestic violence have increased, compared to the first 3 months of last year.

The announcement of the president’s death opens a period of political uncertainty in Iran, a major player in the Middle East, a region rocked by the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas, press agencies note. Ebrahim Raisi, who had the title of ayatollah, was the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran for almost three years. Considered an ultraconservative, he was elected in June 2021 in the first round of a vote marked by record absenteeism in the presidential elections and the absence of strong competitors.

The military prosecutors claim that, on June 11 and 12, 1990, the state authorities decided to launch a violent attack against the demonstrators in University Square in Bucharest, who were peacefully expressing their political opinions, opposed to the government. Over 10,000 miners were brought to the Capital to restore order. Four people were then shot dead, almost 1,400 suffered physical or mental injuries and 1,250 people were deprived of their freedom.

INCIDENT. The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, stated on Wednesday that he was shocked to learn that the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, had been shot and he firmly condemned such extremist acts. Also, Romanian PM Marcel Ciolacu, declared himself “deeply shocked” by this incident and stated that the authors of such acts must be held accountable. Robert Fico was shot and wounded on Wednesday after a government meeting held outside the capital Bratislava, in the town of Handlova. The perpetrator of the attack was arrested. Since October last year, Prime Minister Robert Fico, a conservative Social Democrat and close to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has been at the helm of a coalition government formed by his Smer-SD party, another social democrat party, Hlas, and the nationalist Slovak National Party (SNS).

TALKS. The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminiţa Odobescu, had, on Wednesday, bilateral consultations with her counterpart from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Hanke Bruins Slot, who is visiting Bucharest. According to a press release, the Romanian minister welcomed the Netherlands’ contribution to NATO’s deterrence and defense posture in Romania and highlighted the need for a continuous and firm support for Ukraine and ensuring security in the entire Black Sea region. Also, Luminita Odobescu welcomed the involvement of the Netherlands in the support given to the Republic of Moldova along the lines of reform, development and strengthening of resilience. According to the communiqué, the two officials also discussed the completion of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area and the European Union’s enlargement policy.

INFLATION. The National Bank of Romania has revised its inflation forecast for the end of the year up to 4.9% from 4.7% previously and says the inflation rate may go down to 3.5% at the end of 2025, according to a report presented on Wednesday by the bank’s governor, Mugur Isărescu. He said that the inflation rate will continue to drop, but at a slower pace than the initial estimate. The main uncertainties and risks associated with the evolution of the inflation rate have to do with the high budget deficit, the salary dynamics and possible additional fiscal and budgetary measures needed to cut down expenses. The latest statistical data show a slight drop in the inflation rate from 6.61% in March to 5.9% in April. The National Bank has decided to maintain the monetary policy interest rate at 7%, unchanged since last year.

ECONOMY. The European Commission has slightly improved, to 3.3%, the estimates regarding the growth of the Romanian economy this year, thanks to the acceleration of private consumption and higher incomes, according to the spring economic forecasts published on Wednesday by the Community Executive. The EC warned, however, that the government deficit will rise to 6.9% of the GDP in 2024 and to 7% of the GDP in 2025 due to increased spending. On the other hand, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has not changed its estimates regarding the evolution of the Romanian economy in 2024 and warns that the main vulnerability remains the fiscal position, given that the deficit reached 5.9% of the GDP in 2023, according to a report also published on Wednesday by the international financial institution. According to the EBRD’s most recent forecasts, Romania’s GDP would register a 3.2% growth this year. According to the institution, the growth rate of the Romanian economy slowed down significantly in 2023, to 2.1%, even if this was one of the best performances recorded at the regional level. However, the decrease in private consumption, in the context of high inflation, was counteracted by the increase in investments and government spending. Public spending is expected to continue to grow, against the background of salary increases in the public system and pensions, which might lead to an even bigger deficit in 2024, the EBRD warns.

LAW. Motorists caught drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs can see their driving permits suspended for up to 10 years, under a new law passed by the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday. Also, they will no longer be able to delay serving their prison sentence. The bill was initiated in the aftermath of an accident that took place in the 2 Mai Black Sea resort in which two young people were killed after being hit by a driver who had used drugs. The Chamber of Deputies also passed legislation obliging people who are fleeing abroad to evade serving time in prison to cover the extradition costs.

TENNIS. On Wednesday, the Romanian tennis player Simona Halep had to withdraw from the first round of the Trophee Clarins (WTA 125) tournament for medical reasons. Also on Wednesday, the Romanian Gabriela Ruse qualified for the next round of the tournament in Paris, after winning the match against the Chinese Lin Zhu. (MI)
