COVID-19 ROMANIA – 16,610 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were reported on Wednesday in Romania in addition to 58 related fatalities, of which 2 were prior to the reference period, the Group for Strategic Communication has announced. Half of Romanias counties are in the so-called red zone with a high incidence rate. Since the start of the pandemic, over 1.9 million Romanians got infected with COVID-19 and some 60,000 died to the virus. Against the backdrop of the anti-vaxx campaign fuelled by part of the media, a number of politicians and other public figures, Romania has the second-lowest national vaccination rates at EU level after Bulgaria.

COVID-19 WORLD – The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned global leaders that the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. The WHO official warned against the misleading assumption that the Omicron strain is mild and thus less threatening. “An exponential rise in cases, regardless of the severity of the individual variants, leads to inevitable increase in hospitalizations and deaths,” Dr. Ghebreyesus argues. The warning comes amidst an alarming surge in the number of infections across Europe. Today, Bulgaria reported nearly 11,200 new COVID-19 infections over the course of 24 hours. The Czech Republic too reported 28 thousand new infections, a daily record since the pandemic began. In turn, France reported nearly 500 thousand infections yesterday.

PLAGIARISM – The “Carol I” National University in Bucharest has launched a process examining the observance of quality and academic standards in the case of Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucăs PhD thesis, defended in 2003. The decision follows revelations and plagiarism allegations from the media. The Prime Minister has denied the allegations, claiming he observed all legal and academic requirements. Ciucă is the third head of government facing plagiarism allegations after Social-Democrats Victor Ponta and Mihai Tudose. Last month Research Minister Florin Roman resigned after facing similar accusations regarding his MA thesis.

STRIKE – Education trade unions have today staged a two-hour warning strike. During the interval, all teaching activities were suspended, although pupils remained under their teachers supervision. Teachers demand an increase in their base salaries stipulated in a law passed in 2017, as well as bonuses for specific work conditions and the payment of extra hours. Trade unions also call on the authorities to earmark 6% of the GDP to education spending and to increase the number of teaching staff positions. Also today, law enforcement and National Statistics Institute trade unions staged actions protesting the Governments salary policies.

PROGRAM – The authorities have today launched the National Program for Combating Cancer in an event attended by president Klaus Iohannis. In February 2021, the European Commission launched the Europes Beating Cancer Plan, allotting €4 billion to finance cancer prevention, research and treatment programs across the community bloc. Meanwhile, the Romanian Parliament set up a special task force charged with transposing the Commissions plan into national law. Right now, part of the cancer treatments, lab tests and prevention programs are funded under a nationwide program.

UKRAINE – US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is today paying a visit to Kiev, as part of a new effort to deescalate the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border. Antony Blinken will meet with Ukraines president, Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. According to the US State Department, the purpose of the visit is to reiterate Washingtons commitment to safeguarding Ukraines sovereignty and territorial integrity. On Tuesday, Blinken talked on the phone to Russias Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, ahead of their meeting on Friday in Geneva. Russia has built up a sizable military force on the Ukrainian border, although it has denied allegations over its planned invasion. Last weeks talks between Moscow and Washington over the future European security framework yielded no result, the Americans having dismissed Russias requests as unacceptable. Moscow has called on NATO to rule out any eastward enlargement, to cease all cooperation with ex-Soviet countries and to cancel all maneuvers and troop deployments in Eastern Europe.

TENNIS – Three Romanian tennis players are competing in the second round at the Australian Open. On Thursday, Simona Halep (15 WTA) will take on Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil (83 WTA). COVID-19 – The authorities on Tuesday announced 16,760 new COVID-19 infections, double the number reported on Monday, in addition to 70 related fatalities. Bucharest has reached an infection rate of 6.15 cases per thousand and is now in the so-called red zone with a high incidence rate. With 8 million people vaccinated so far, Romania ranks second at EU level after Bulgaria in terms of the lowest percentage of people vaccinated against COVID-19.

ENERGY – On February 1, the government in Bucharest is expected to endorse new measures aimed at capping electricity and gas prices. The aforementioned measures will be promoted through an emergency decree to be passed next week at the latest. Romanias Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă on Tuesday held talks with energy suppliers who, according to government sources, have agreed to newly announced measures for subsidizing and capping energy prices, pledging to write off and reissue the bills that have been wrongfully reported so far. The Prime Minister on Monday announced that following an agreement of the ruling coalition made up of PNL, PSD and UDMR, prices for gas and electricity would be capped and the consumption limit extended.

MOLDOVA – A Romanian-Moldovan joint government session will be held on February 12, 2022 in Chișinău, Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița has announced. In December last year, Prime Minister Gavrilița paid an official visit to Romania, meeting her Romanian counterpart, Nicolae Ciucă. The Republic of Moldova and Romania are consolidating their robust bilateral cooperation, the Romanian official said at the time, recalling that Romania is Moldovas top trade partner and insisting on the need for this country to improve its business sector so as to attract more Romanian investors. The interconnection of the two countries road infrastructure and reducing tariffs are high on the Romanian Governments agenda. According to Natalia Gavrilița, the absolute priority for Moldova is the interconnection of the two countries energy grids by 2024, which would consolidate the independence and security of the Republic of Moldova.

EU – Maltese center-right MEP Roberta Metsola was elected president of the European Parliament on Tuesday. Metsola, who won 458 votes out of the total of 616, had an absolute majority, avoiding the need for a second round of voting. A member of the European Peoples Party, Metsola succeeds Italian Social Democrat David Sassoli who died last week at the age of 65. Sassoli was a highly appreciated Italian politician and journalist, a supporter of the EU, who firmly campaigned for human rights observance around the world, Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac says. A vocal critic of the abuses committed by Russian president Vladimir Putin, in 2021 Sassoli was barred from entering Russia in response to the EU sanctions imposed to some Russian officials. Sassoli was also a supporter of the EU integration efforts of the Republic of Moldova.

NATO – NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, and Germanys Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, on Tuesday ruled out a military response to a potential Russian aggression against Ukraine. It will mean high political costs for Russia should there be such an intervention and should the principle of sovereignty of states and the integrity of borders be violated, Chancellor Scholz argued. In turn, Jens Stoltenberg said NATO has also made it clear that Russia will pay a high political and financial cot should it choose the path of “violence”. The NATO official went on to say that, right now, there are certain NATO member states that have expressed their readiness to supply weapons to Ukraine, arguing however that the views on this matter vary across the NATO bloc. Although it has rallied a sizable military force on the Ukrainian border, Russia has denied allegations over its planned invasion. Last week, talks between Moscow and Washington over the future European security framework yielded no result, the Americans having dismissed Russias requests as unacceptable. Moscow has called on NATO to rule out any eastward enlargement, particularly in the case of Ukraine, to cease all cooperation with ex-Soviet countries and to cancel all maneuvers and troop deployments in Eastern Europe.

The sixth Romanian player in the main draw, Irina Bara, was knocked out in the competitions opening round. (DB & VP)

Dazu gehören u.a.

Damals waren 10 Menschen gestorben.

    Covid-19 Ro. The
Romanian Prime Minister, Florin Cîţu, has received the second dose of COVID 19
vaccine today. President Klaus Iohannis too got the second jab on Friday. He
said that the vaccine is safe and effective and recommended vaccination to all
Romanians, as the only way, together with the observance of anti-vaccine
protection measures, to get Romania out of the pandemic. The anti-Covid vaccine
produced by AstraZeneca, in collaboration with Oxford University, will be
administered in Romania only to people between 18 and 55 years old. By the end
of this month, 800,000 doses of this vaccine will have reached the country.
Meanwhile, the immunization campaign with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine continues.
The administration of the Moderna vaccine started on Thursday. In total, so
far, about 650 thousand Romanians have been vaccinated. On Friday, more than
2,500 new cases of Covid and 73 deaths were reported in Romania, after 31,000
tests run in 24 hours. About 950 people are hospitalized in intensive care
units. The total number of Sars – Cov – 2 infections has exceeded 740,000, and
the number of deaths has reached 18,740.

    Fire. Two more
patients who were in the fifth ward of the Matei Balş Institute in Bucharest
during last week’s fire died, the
Ministry of Health announced today. These are two men, aged 73 and 91,
respectively. Five people lost their lives on the day of the fire, and nine
more deaths were reported later among patients transferred to other hospitals.
The prosecutor’s office attached to the Bucharest Tribunal announced that it finished,
on Friday, the on-site investigation. So far, 33 people, medical staff,
administrative staff, police officers who participated in the initial
intervention and relatives of the victims have been heard. Several wards burned
and the whole building was affected by smoke. More than 100 patients were
evacuated and transferred to other health facilities. A similar tragedy took
place in November, at the emergency hospital in Piatra Neamţ (northeast), as a
result of which 10 patients died.

Navalny. The leader of the Renew Liberal
group in the European Parliament, the former Romanian Prime Minister Dacian
Ciolos, has said that the High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the Union,
Josep Borrell, must come with explanations before the MEPs, after he was
humiliated by the Russian Foreign Minister, Serghei Lavrov. Today’s
events are a slap in Europe’s face and should serve as a lesson that in
negotiations with the Russians we can only impose ourselves if we are united in
defending the values on which the European Union is founded: respect for
human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and human rights
    – Ciolos wrote in a post on Facebook, after Moscow announced on Friday
the expulsion of three diplomats from Germany, Poland and Sweden, because they
participated in the protests for the release of Aleksei Navalny. The head of
European diplomacy had admitted, since the beginning of the week, that he would
not obtain the release of the most fierce opponent of President Vladimir Putin.
At a meeting with Lavrov, Borell reiterated his call for the release of Navalny

    Training. Soldiers
from the Romanian Naval Forces and Air Force carried out, on Friday, in the
Black Sea basin, a joint training mission with US Navy soldiers. According to
the Ministry of Defense in Bucharest, the exercise was the first joint
Romanian-American training activity this year and aimed at strengthening the NATO
assurance measures in the South-East of Europe, as well as increasing the level
of interoperability, demonstrating, once again, the US involvement in ensuring
security in the Black Sea area. The strategic partnership with the USA is one
of the pillars of Romania’s defense and security. In an increasingly dynamic
security environment, such as the Black Sea, cooperation between the Romanian
Army and American forces deployed in Europe contributes to strengthening the
ability to react, quickly and efficiently, to a wide range of social security
threats on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance, the Romanian
    Defense Ministry states.

    February 3, 2021 UPDATE

Covid-19. 2,752 new cases of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 have been registered in the last 24 hours in Romania, following more than 33,000 tests at national level, the Strategic Communication Group announced on Wednesday. During the same period, 87 people diagnosed with Covid-19 died. Almost eight thousand patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in specialized health units, of whom 1,006 in intensive care. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, over 735 thousand people have been infected in Romania, and about 90% have recovered. The vaccination campaign continues, and Romania ranks 4th in the European Union in terms of vaccination coverage, with a rate of 3.75% , said on Tuesday, the president of the National Committee for Coordination of Vaccination Activities against SARS-CoV-2, military doctor Valeriu Gheorghiţă. He added that the EU average is about 2.95%. About 620,000 Romanians have been vaccinated so far. The vaccine delivery schedule is much delayed, as in all European countries, but the manufacturing companies have given assurances that, from the middle of this month, the number of delivered doses will increase.

School. Romanian schools, high schools and kindergartens will be reopened starting Monday, February 8, when the second semester starts. The National Committee for Emergency Situations adopted on Wednesday the decision that includes the three scenarios based on which the educational units will be opened, depending on the infection rate in each locality. In the case of military and police high schools, these scenarios do not apply. The Minister of Education, Sorin Cîmpeanu, said on Wednesday that the Government adopted an emergency ordinance that provides, for the second semester of this school year, an amount of 30 million Euro for the development and payment of remedial classes, and a target group of students will be established, including those who did not have access to the Internet or IT equipment or did not have their school record completed in the first semester. The decision of the Romanian authorities is in line with that of most European Union states.

Visit. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis received on Wednesday the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha Gonzalez Laya, who paid an official visit to Bucharest. The two officials underlined the excellent level of the bilateral relationship, marked, in 2021, by the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and Spain. The head of state stressed the need to intensify cooperation in the economic sphere, especially by increasing the Spanish investment presence in Romania. The president also reiterated the importance of the large community of Romanians settled in Spain, which has contributed substantially to strengthening ties between the two countries. The head of diplomacy in Madrid met, on Wednesday, with the Romanian prime minister, Florin Cîțu and with her Romanian counterpart, Bogdan Aurescu. During the discussions, the substantial character of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and Spain was highlighted. Arancha González Laya announced that the meeting of the Romanian and Spanish governments will most likely take place in June this year. The Spanish official appreciated the contribution of the Romanian community (over 1 million people), to the Spanish society.

Tourists. The Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu sent a letter to his Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard on Wednesday, reiterating the Bucharest authorities concern and dissatisfaction with the arbitrary manner in which Mexican authorities have refused Romanian citizens access to Mexico, calling for an immediate stop of such an abusive practice. Romania considers that the return decisions have not been sufficiently clearly explained and communicated to each Romanian citizen involved or to the Romanian authorities and expresses its surprise at the lack of any prior signals on this subject from the Mexican authorities, as is customary in good bilateral relations. Earlier, Minister Bogdan Aurescu said he was very upset because of how the Romanian tourists were treated and announced that he would ask for clarification of the reasons why Romanians were denied access to Mexico, as well as the conditions under which they are held at the airport. 114 Romanians blocked by the Mexican authorities at the airport in Cancún will soon be brought home with a flight of the German company Lufthansa, arranged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest. In this context, the MFA calls on the Romanian citizens who intend or were going to travel in the next period in Mexico to postpone their trip, until the situation is clarified and remedied. In this regard, a travel warning was also issued.

Cooperation. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Romania held on Wednesday the “Romania – Pakistan Online Business Forum”, having as main objective the promotion of bilateral trade. In this regard, a “match-making” session was organized between the participating companies from the two countries, in the form of separate panels, depending on the field of activity, namely: light industry, machinery and equipment, the food industry and the extractive industry. “Romania and Pakistan have a long relationship of friendship and collaboration, the Romanian specialists from the 70s and 80s being the ones who laid the foundations of Pakistani industry. Thus, it becomes almost a duty to double our efforts in terms of increasing the volume of bilateral trade”, said Zafar Iqbar, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Romania. In 2019, trades between the two countries exceeded 400 thousand euros, of which 318 thousand euros in exports. Also, in the first 9 months of 2020, the value of trade exchanges had exceeded 510 thousand euros, and in terms of exports an increase of 55% was reported.

Bills. The government in Bucharest approved, in Wednesdays meeting, the granting by Romania of an emergency external humanitarian aid for Croatia, following the earthquake that took place, in December, near Zagreb. The value of the aid is about 130,000 euros. The executive also approved a draft law that repeals a normative act that prohibited the sale, for a period of 2 years, of state-owned participations in national companies and societies. This is the repeal of Law 173 of 2020 on some measures to protect national interests in economic activities. The law, initiated by the Social Democratic Party and voted by the Social-Democratic majority in the previous Parliament, did not allow the sale or listing on the stock exchange of shares held by the state in national companies. The bill adopted by the Executive on Wednesday will be sent to Parliament for approval. The government has also approved a memorandum on the allocation of 50 million euros from European funds to improve hospital warning systems to ensure increased patient safety.

Tennis. All tennis matches scheduled for Thursday in Melbourne in preparation for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, have been canceled. The measure was taken by the organizers after detecting a case of coronavirus infection at a hotel where several hundred players and members of the technical staff were in mandatory quarantine before the competition. The decision also affects the Romanian tennis players present at these tournaments. Simona Halep, the world number two, was to play on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Gippsland Trophy (WTA 500) in Melbourne, with over 565 thousand dollars in prize money, with the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (33 WTA). In the same competition, Irina Begu (79 WTA) was to meet the Japanese Naomi Osaka (3 WTA) in the quarterfinals. The matches in the doubles event were also canceled. Another Romanian, Mihaela Buzarnescu, may also compete in Melbourne provided that some of the already qualified athletes withdraw.

Before Simona Halep started going up in the world rankings, Romanian athletes have not been very successful in Melbourne. Halep played the final in 2018 and lost to Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. Last year, the Romanian made it to the semifinals while in 2014 and 2015 she was among the top eight players of the tournament. Except for Halep, the best results at the Australian Open were obtained by Virginia Ruzici and Irina Spirlea. Ruzici made it to the quarterfinals in 1980 but was defeated by Hana Manlikova of the Czech Republic, who won the tournament. Seventeen years later, Spirlea also lost in the quarterfinals to Martina Hingis of Switzerland, who won the tournament.

In the doubles it is Horia Tecau that has had the best results at the Australian Open. In 2012 he won the mixed doubles’ competition alongside the American player Bethanie Mattek-Sands. In the men’s doubles, he made it to the semifinals twice: in 2012, with the Swedish Robert Lindstedt and in 2015 with the Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer. In the men’s singles, Ilie Nastase played at the Australian Open once, in 1981, when he was 35. He was up against Chris Lewis of New Zealand and lost.

Februar statt.
