    EU – Romania will hold the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union for January-June 2019, by six months earlier than initially scheduled. The EU Council has taken this decision following Britain’s vote to leave the EU. British Premier Theresa May has said that her country will not take over the EU presidency next July as the London government will be busy negotiating the terms of its EU exit. Estonia will be the country to hold the EU presidency as of next July, instead of Britain.




    SOLIDARITY – The Romanian Orthodox Church has said that the attack that took place in a church in northwestern France is a “symbolic attack on Europe’s Christian identity”, and has voiced solidarity with the French people. On Tuesday, two terrorists killed in a barbaric way an 84-year old priest during the religious service he was holding in the presence of several people. One of them was seriously injured in the attack. The perpetrators were killed by the police. ISIS has claimed the attack.




    DRILL – Over July 27th and August 7th, 27 hundred soldiers from 10 countries are participating in a large-scale exercise in Cincu, central Romania. Five NATO members are to join the drill: Romania, the USA, Canada, Poland and Bulgaria. They will join five members of the Partnership for Peace: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the ex-soviet Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The opening ceremony will be attended by Romanian Defence Minister Mihnea Motoc.




    VOTING – The Bucharest Government will submit to public debate, until mid-August, a draft emergency order on the revision of the postal voting law for Romanians abroad, PM Dacian Ciolos has announced today. We remind you that parliamentary elections will be held in Romania at the end of this year. The National Liberal Party has asked the Government to take several measures to facilitate voting abroad. One of these requests is to increase the number of polling stations abroad at least to the level of 2014. Also, applications by Romanian citizens living abroad to be included in the Election Registry should be submitted by made electronic post. According to the Electoral Authority, over 3,600 applications to be included in the Election Registry have been submitted by July 25, 2016. Over 3 million Romanians are currently working abroad legally, most of them in EU countries.



    TENNIS – Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, WTA’s 5th seed, qualified on Wednesday morning to the round of sixteen of the tennis tournament in Montreal, Canada, after defeating Australian Daria Gavrilova no 54 WTA, 6-2, 6-3. Halep will next meet the winner of the game between Czech Karolina Pliskova and Italian Sara Errani.




    FOOTBALL – Romania’s vice champion Steaua Bucharest was up against the Czech side Sparta Praga in an away match on Tuesday evening in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The match ended in a draw with both teams scoring once. In the same stage of the competition, Romania’s champion Astra Giurgiu is today playing at home against FC Copenhagen.

    Défense — Le Conseil suprême de Défense du pays s’est réuni ce mardi à Bucarest pour analyser les conséquences pour la Roumanie des décisions prises au récent sommet de l’OTAN, qui s’est tenu les 8 et 9 juillet en Pologne. Le Conseil a également défini les mesures et les actions à entreprendre en vue de la mise en place des décisions adoptées. A l’issue de la réunion, le chef de l’Etat roumain, Klaus Iohannis, a annoncé que la brigade multinationale dont la création avait été décidée à Varsovie serait constituée en mars-avril 2017, conformément aux plans de la Roumanie ; aux moins six alliés, dont la Pologne et la Bulgarie, se sont déclarés prêts à y participer. Le président Iohannis a fait savoir que le Conseil suprême de Défense a entendu une évaluation de la situation sécuritaire du pays, du point de vue des risques et menaces terroristes, dans le contexte de la multiplication des attentats en Europe, tels les événements tragiques de France et d’Allemagne. Selon M. Iohannis, la Roumanie n’a pas pour l’instant de raisons d’élever le niveau d’alerte terroriste. Les membres du Conseil suprême de Défense se sont aussi penchés sur la situation en Turquie et au Moyen Orient et ont examiné, pour avis, le projet de loi de l’intégration du système ferroviaire roumain au système ferroviaire unique européen.



    Militaire — Plus de 2.700 militaires de 10 pays participeront à un ample exercice qui aura lieu à Cincu (centre de la Roumanie), du 27 juillet au 7 août. Y seront représentés 5 pays membres de l’OTAN — la Roumanie, les Etats Unis, le Canada, la Pologne et la Bulgarie — et cinq Etats participants au Partenariat pour la paix — l’Arménie, l’Azerbaïdjan, la Géorgie, la République de Moldova et l’Ukraine. Le ministre roumain de la défense, Mihnea Motoc, sera présent à la cérémonie d’ouverture.

    Elections — Dimanche électoral en Roumanie – les Roumains votent pour les municipales. Selon les données fournies par le Bureau électoral central, 39,17% du nombre des électeurs inscrits sur les listes électorales avaient voté à trois heures de la fermeture des urnes.. Plus de 250.000 candidats sont en lice pour les fauteuils de maires et de conseillers locaux des près de 3200 villes et communes, et respectivement de membres des 41 conseils départementaux.



    Militaire — Des militaires roumains, américains et britanniques participent, à partir du lundi, 6 juin, et jusqu’au18 juin, à un exercice militaire qui se déroulera à Cincu, au centre de la Roumanie. Les effectifs impliqués dans ces manœuvres sont composés de 1.200 militaires de l’Armée de terre roumaine, 150 militaires du Royaume Uni et 200 des Etats Unis, auxquels s’ajouteront des aéronefs des Forces aériennes roumaines.



    Gymnastique — La Roumaine Cătălina Ponor a décroché deux médailles de bronze, ce dimanche, dans les finales aux agrès du Championnats d’Europe de gymnastique artistique féminine, accueillis par la capitale de la Suisse, la ville de Berne. Cătălina Ponor, la seule médaillée de l’équipe de la Roumanie, a occupé la troisième marche du podium au sol et à la poutre. A 28 ans, et avec trois titres olympiques, à Athènes, en 2004, et sept titres continentaux, elle est une des meilleures gymnastes de l’histoire de ce sport en Roumanie.

    LOCAL ELECTIONS UPDATE – Bucharesters have for the first time elected a woman for the position of mayor: senator Gabriela Vranceanu Firea, a member of the Social Democratic Party, show exit polls issued on Sunday evening, at the closure of polling stations. A former controversial journalist, who joined the Social Democratic Party 4 years ago, Gabriela Vranceanu-Firea, 44, got 41% of the votes, being followed by Nicusor Dan, the leader of the Save Bucharest Union, a former NGO turned into a party, who got 30% and the leader of the National Liberal Party, Catalin Predoiu with 14%. According to the same polls, the Social Democratic Party has claimed at least 5 of the 6 sectors of the capital Bucharest. The Social Democrats and their allies from the National Union for the Progress of Romania obtained about 40% of the votes for Bucharest’s General Council, followed by the Save Bucharest Union whose percentage varies between 19% and 25%, and the Liberals with 19%. The turnout in Bucharest was only 33%, much below the national average of 48%. With almost 70% of the votes, the former PM Emil Boc from the Liberal Party remains the mayor of the biggest city in northwestern Romania, Cluj-Napoca. These local elections took place in one round, the winner being the candidate who got the simple majority of the votes cast. The measure has been criticized by civil society representatives and the media, which claim that, in the context of a low voter turnout, the future mayors will be considered illegitimate.



    IOHANNIS – The Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, will pay a visit to Luxembourg on Monday and Tuesday at the invitation of Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The Romanian official will also meet with the prime minister Xavier Bettel, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars di Bartolomeo, and the foreign minister, Jean Asselborn. The talks will focus on deepening the political and sectoral relations between Romania and Luxembourg, with special emphasis on boosting economic cooperation as well as cooperation in the fields of research, development and industrial innovation. Another issue under debate will be the preparation of the NATO summit to be held in Warsaw, in July. On the occasion of the visit, the two officials will sign the Exchange Program in the fields of science and technology, education, culture and sports between the government of Romania and Luxembourg, valid for the period 2016- 2021.



    MILITARY DRILL – Romanian, American and British soldiers are participating, as of Monday, in the SARMIS-16 multinational drill to be held in Cincu, central Romania. The exercises, which will come to an end on June 18, will be attended by 1,200 soldiers with the Romanian ground forces, 150 British and 200 American soldiers. Aircraft of the Romanian Air Forces will also participate in the military drill.



    FOOTBALL – Romania’s national football team on Sunday reached France where they will participate in the finals of the European Championship. Romania will meet the French eleven on June 10 in Paris, in the opening match. They are playing in a group which also includes Switzerland and Albania. In the last training match held Friday in Bucharest the Romanian footballers defeated the Georgian eleven 5-1. In the previous matches, in Italy the Romanians drew the match with the team of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1-1 and lost to Ukraine 3-4.



    GYMNASYCS – The Romanian gymnast Catalina Ponor on Sunday won 2 bronze medals in the apparatus finals, in the floor and beam events, at the European Gymnastics Championships held in Berne, Switzerland. Ponor, 28, is one of the gymnasts who has obtained the most medals in the history of Romanian gymnastics. She also won 3 gold medals in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and another 7 continental titles.



    SMURD – 3 of the 4 crew members of the SMURD Romanian emergency rescue service, who died in a helicopter crash in the neighboring Republic of Moldova, were buried with military funeral honors on Sunday, in Iasi (northeastern Romania). The fourth victim was buried with military funeral honors in Bacau (northeastern Romania). Physician Dumea Mihaela, principal medical assistant Sandu Adrian-Gabriel, commander Gavril Ilie Doru and captain-commander Şocae Constantin Voicu were decorated, post mortem, for their professionalism, humaneness and spirit of sacrifice proved in the many rescue missions they participated in. The helicopter crashed during a mission, 20 kms from the Moldovan capital, Chisinau.
