Anul sportiv 2018 (II)

Principalul
eveniment sportiv din debutul părţii a doua a anului 2018 a fost turneul de
tenis de la Wimbledon, lipsit însă de rezultate notabile pentru sportivii
români. Simona Halep, favorita numărul unu a probei individuale feminine, a
fost învinsă în turul trei de Su-Wei
Hsieh, din Taiwan, cu 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Românca s-a aflat la primul eşec după
câştigarea primului său titlu de Mare Şlem, la Roland Garros. În faţa
jucătoarei din Taiwan, Halep a pierdut după ce a condus cu 5-2 în setul al
treilea şi a avut o minge de meci.

A
urmat apoi turneul feminin de tenis BRD Bucharest Open, din cadrul circuitului
WTA, singurul concurs din tenisul mare găzduit de România. La simplu s-a impus
jucătoarea letonă Anastasija Sevastova, care a învins-o în finală pe croata
Petra Martic cu scorul de 7-6, 6-2. La dublu a câştigat cuplul compus din Irina
Begu şi Andreea Mitu. Perechea română s-a impus în ultimul act în faţa cuplului
format din muntenegreanca Danka Kovinic şi belgianca Maryna Zanevska în două
seturi: 6-3, 6-4.

Cea
mai importantă performanţă sportivă românească a lunii iulie i-a aparţinut
scrimerei Ana Maria Popescu. Ea a câştigat medalia de argint a probei
individuale feminine de spadǎ din cadrul Campionatelor Mondiale de scrimǎ desfăşurate
în China, la Wuxi. Românca a trecut, succesiv, de japoneza Kanna Oishi, de
italianca Rossella Fiamingo, de ucrainencele Joan Feybi Bejura şi Olena
Kriviţka. În semifinală, a învins-o pe Courtney Hurley, din Statele Unite, dar
a pierdut finala în faţa italiencei Maria Navarria. Ana Maria Popescu a obţinut
astfel cea mai bună performanţă individuală din carieră la un Campionat
Mondial.

În
august, România a revenit
în fruntea ierarhiei europene a canotajului. Delegaţia tricolorǎ prezentǎ la
Campionatele Europene de la Glasgow a ocupat primul loc în clasamentul pe
naţiuni, cu şapte medalii, dintre care trei de aur, douǎ de argint şi douǎ de
bronz. Au obţinut medalii de aur echipajele feminine de doi rame fǎrǎ cârmaci
şi de 8+1, alǎturi de cel masculin de patru rame fǎrǎ cârmaci. Pe treapta a
doua a podiumului au urcat bǎieţii de la dublu vâsle şi fetele de la patru rame
fǎrǎ cârmaci. Cu bronz au fost medaliate echipajele masculine de 8+1 şi de doi
rame fǎrǎ cârmaci.

Jucătoarea
română de tenis Mihaela Buzărnescu a câştigat apoi primul său titlu WTA din
carieră. Ea a trecut categoric de grecoaica Maria Sakkari, cu 6-1, 6-0, în
finala turneului de la San José. La 30 de ani, Mihaela Buzărnescu a intrat în
premieră, după această victorie, între primele 20 de jucătoare ale lumii.

Au
urmat noi performanţe româneşti în turneul de la Cincinnati. La feminin, Simona
Halep a ajuns până în finala de simplu, dar a fost învinsă de olandeza Kiki
Bertens, după mai mult de două ore de joc, cu 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, şi după ce a
ratat, în setul secund, o minge de meci. În concursul masculin de dublu,
perechea formată din tenismanul român Horia Tecău şi olandezul Jean-Julien
Rojer s-a oprit în semifinale. Cei doi s-au revanşat însă la scurt timp, în
turneul de la Winston-Salem, pe care l-au câştigat. În ultimul act, Tecău şi
Rojer au dispus cu 6-4, 6-2 de cuplul format din americanul Jamie Cerretani şi
indianul Leander Paes.

În
septembrie, România a obţinut două medalii la Campionatele Mondiale de canotaj
găzduite de oraşul bulgar Plovdiv: aur şi argint. Echipajul alcătuit din Ionela
– Livia Cozmiuc şi Gianina – Elena Beleagă a câştigat aurul în proba de dublu
vâsle (categoria uşoară). Campioane mondiale en titre, Cozmiuc şi Beleagă au
fost urmate pe podium de echipajele Statelor Unite şi Olandei. În proba
masculină de doi rame fără cârmaci, Marius – Vasile Cozmiuc şi Ciprian Tudosă
au luat medaliile de argint. Pe primul
loc s-a clasat echipajul Croaţiei, iar pe trei, ambarcaţiunea Franţei.

Tenisul
a programat, la Cluj partida de Cupă Davis dintre echipele României şi
Poloniei, pentru promovarea în Grupa I, zona Europa / Africa. Din păcate,
tenismenii tricolori au pierdut cu 2 la 3. Tot în septembrie, tenisul de masă
românesc a înregistrat cea mai mare performanţă a sa la o competiţie europeană
masculină din ultima jumătate de secol. Ovidiu Ionescu a câştigat medalia de
argint în proba masculină a Campionatelor Europene individuale din oraşul
spaniol Alicante. El a egalat astfel performanţa realizată de Radu Negulescu,
sportiv care a urcat, la Zagreb, în 1960, pe a doua treaptă a podiumului
continental.

În
octombrie, campioana României la handbal feminin, echipa CSM Bucureşti, a
debutat cu dreptul în actuala ediţie a Ligii Campionilor. Gruparea din Capitală
a întâlnit, în primul joc, cel mai dificil adversar din grupa D, respectiv
echipa maghiară Ferencváros Budapesta. CSM s-a impus categoric, cu 36 la 31.
Cele mai multe goluri, în număr de 9, au
fost înscrise de Cristina Neagu.

Apoi,
la Bucureşti a avut loc cel mai mare concurs atletic găzduit anual de România.
Aproape 20 de mii de alergători au luat startul la Maratonul Internaţional
Bucureşti, competiţie ajunsă la a 11-a ediţie. Au câştigat atletul kenyan Hosea
Kipkemboi şi sportiva etiopiană Almaz Gelana Erba. La semimaraton s-au impus
Maxim Răileanu, din Republica Moldova, şi alergătoarea română Maria Magdalena
Velişcu.

La
sfârşitul lunii octombrie, Marius Copil a fost la un pas de a realiza cea mai
mare performanţă individuală a tenisului masculin românesc din ultimul deceniu.
El a pierdut finala turneului ATP 500 de la Basel, din Elveţia, în faţa elveţianului
Roger Federer, care l-a învins în două seturi: 7-6, 6-4. Copil a învins, în
drumul către finală, şase adversari mai bine clasaţi decât el. Printre aceştia
s-au numărat croatul Marin Cilic, la acea oră numărul şase mondial, pe care l-a
eliminat în optimile de finală, şi germanul Alexander Zverev, al cincilea
jucător al lumii în acel moment, în faţa căruia s-a impus în faza semifinală.

În
debutul lunii noiembrie, Horia Tecău şi olandezul Jean-Julien Rojer au ajuns
până în finala de dublu a turneului de tenis ATP Masters 1000 de la Paris,
dotat cu premii totale de aproape 5 milioane de euro. Tecău şi Rojer au fost
învinşi în ultimul act de perechea formată din spaniolul Marcel Granollers şi
americanul Rajeev Ram cu 6-4, 6-4.

Delegaţia
care a reprezentat România la Mondialele de haltere din Turkmenistan s-a întors cu trei medalii. La feminin,
Loredana Toma a câştigat medalia de argint la stilul aruncat, în limitele
categoriei 64 de kg, iar Cristina Iovu a câştigat bronzul, tot la stilul aruncat, la categoria 55 de kg. La
masculin, Nicolae Onica a cucerit medalia de bronz la total, în limitele
categoriei 96 kg.

Tot
în noiembrie, echipa de rugby a României a câştigat, la Baia Mare, cu scorul de
36 – 6 meciul de baraj disputat cu Portugalia pentru menţinerea în Rugby Europe
Championship, al doilea eşalon valoric european. Amintim că, în urma deciziei
World Rugby de a descalifica România de la Cupa Mondială 2019 din Japonia şi de
a o penaliza cu 25 de puncte ca urmare a folosirii unui jucător neeligibil în
partidele de calificare, România a ajuns pe ultimul loc al clasamentului Rugby
Europe Championship 2018. Astfel, Stejarii
au
fost obligaţi să dispute acest meci cu
Portugalia, care a câştigat Rugby Europe Trophy 2018, al treilea eşalon valoric
continental.

Luna decembrie a fost
dominată, pentru iubitorii sportului românesc, de Campionatul European de
handbal feminin. Echipa României a ocupat locul 4. Tricolorele au pierdut
finala mică în faţa Olandei, cu 20 la 24. Din echipa română, cea mai remarcată
jucătoare a fost Crina Pintea. Ea a fost
inclusă în formaţia ideală a Campionatului, fiind considerată cel mai bun pivot
al competiţiei. Intrarea în careul de aşi al Europei a asigurat reprezentativei
române calificarea la Campionatul Mondial de anul viitor, programat în Japonia.
Titlul european a fost câştigat, în premieră, de selecţionata Franţei, care a
învins, în finală, formaţia Rusiei cu scorul de 24-21.

FORUM Romania’s
president Klaus Iohannis will be attending the High-level Forum Africa-Europe
in Vienna on Monday and Tuesday. According to a communiqué issued by the
Romanian presidency, the Romanian official is expected to highlight, besides
the challenges facing the two continents, the numerous dialogue opportunities
and cooperation fields between the European Union and the African Union,
between Romania and the African states. President Iohannis is expected to
mention the fact that as a country taking over the EU rotating presidency on
January 1st, Romania will continue to promote, jointly with other EU
partners, the cooperation activities aimed at raising the level of trade
exchanges and create new opportunities. The forum is aimed at strengthening the
EU’s long-term partnership with the African continent and will lay emphasis on
boosting sustainable investment, the creation of fresh jobs as well as advanced
cooperation in the digital era.

EVENTS Timisoara, a city in western Romania, on Sunday saw a
series of events aimed at marking the beginning of the anti-communist
revolution in December 1989. Sunday’s events included a festive session of the
Local Council devoted to the commemoration of the martyr heroes, educational
activities for the young people and an anniversary show. Saturday saw a Freedom
March, staged by an association of the revolutionaries. Monday will be a
mourning day to the memory of the Revolution martyrs, while on December the 20th,
locals are to celebrate the day when Timisoara became Romania’s first city free
of communism. The revolt against Nicolae Ceausescu’s dictatorship commenced on
December 16th 1989 in Timisoara and quickly spread to other Romanian
cities. Over 1,000 people were killed and 3,000 wounded in the then clashes
between protesters and riot police. Romania was the only country in the Eastern
bloc, in which the communist dictatorship was overthrown through bloodshed and
its communist leaders were executed.

WEATHER Romania has been seeing mixed precipitations on large
areas and an overcast sky in most of its regions of late. Snowfalls have been
reported in the country’s west and south-west as well as in its mountainous
regions. Mixed precipitations have been reported in Romania’s central and
eastern regions as well as moderate rainfalls in the south. The highs of the
day range between -3 and 10 degrees Celsius. Weather phenomena like snowfalls,
sleet and glazed frost are expected all throughout the territory in the
following hours. Heavy snowfalls and blizzard have disrupted rail and road
traffic in the country’s west and south-west. Power outages have been reported
in towns and villages in Romania’s western regions.

HANDBALL Romania’s national handball side was outperformed
by the Netherlands on Sunday in a match counting towards the third or fourth
position of the European Women’s Handball Championships hosted by France. This
is the two sides’ second game, the first match also belonging to the Dutch
team. However, thanks to their qualification for the competition’s semifinals,
the Romanians have secured tickets for the World Championships in Japan, next
year. Romanian pivot Crina Pintea has been included in the All Stars team of
the present edition of this competition. We recall that team leader Cristina
Neagu got severely injured and that will keep her off the court for the rest of
the season. However, the goals she scored in France have allowed her to become
the best all-time scoarer in European championships. The best performance
obtained by the Romanians in a European championships was the bronze medal they
got in 2010.

BRUSSELS – Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis is attending in Brussels
the European Council meeting and the Euro Summit. The Council’s agenda includes
negotiations on the future EU budget after 2020, the Union’s Single Market,
migration, climate change and the fight against racism and xenophobia. As
regards the future budget of the EU, Romania’s president pleads for its rapid
adoption, specifying that Romania, while holding the presidency of the Council
of the EU, will act towards ensuring significant progress in the negotiations. Also,
he supports the efforts made by the members states with regard to the external dimension
of migration and an active involvement in the dialogue with the external
partners, the countries of origin and transit. On the sidelines of the summit,
president Iohannis has had a meeting with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
They have discussed the informal summit on the future of Europe to be hosted by
the Romanian city of Sibiu on May 9th, 2019, which will play a major
role in outlining the strategic agenda of the EU for 2020-2024.

COOPERATION – Romania benefits from
the US’s unequivocal support for a quick accession to the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), according to the conclusions drawn
at the meeting in Washington between the Romanian Minister for the Business Environment,
Stefan-Radu Oprea, and the US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. The two
officials discussed Romania’s priorities during its term at the helm of the Council
of the EU and boosting investment under the strategic partnership between the
two countries. According to statistics, bilateral trade exchanges stood at a
total 2 billion dollars in the first nine months of the year, 6.8% more than in the same period last year.
Romanian exports to the US grew by 29%, up to 1.15 billion dollars, and imports
from that country dropped by 15%, to 800 million dollars.

NO-CONFIDENCE -
A no-confidence motion against the Government formed by the Social Democratic
Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats and headed by the Social
Democrat Viorica Dancila will be filed in the Romanian Parliament on Friday.
The document has been signed by 163 Senators and Deputies members of the opposition National Liberal Party,
Save Romania Union and People’s Movement Party, as well as by non-affiliated
MPs. The initiators of the motion say that this is not a just request from the
opposition, it’s a national emergency, and those who will try and reject it
will carry a historic responsibility on their shoulders. The motion will be
debated and voted on next week.

MOLDOVA – The local and parliamentary elections that are
due in the Republic of Moldova next year pose risks to the economic development
of the former Soviet state, with a predominantly Romanian-speaking population,
according to analysts with the Expert-Grup Center in Chisinau, quoted by Radio
Romania correspondents. In their opinion, a drop in foreign assistance and
budget revenues could increase the internal debt and also fees and taxes. For
2019, experts forecast an economic growth within the 3.5 – 5.2% range. However,
they also warn that decreasing taxes only a few months before the elections
will diminish budget revenues and therefore, after the election, the future
Government might increase other taxes and resort to loans from the internal
market, especially given that foreign financing has been dropping. Business
people are reluctant to investing, waiting for the result of the elections.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled for February, and the local ones are due
in June. Opinion polls indicate the pro-Russia Socialists as the favourites,
followed by the pro-European opposition and the ruling Democratic Party.

HANDBALL – On Friday night in Paris, Romania’s national women’s handball
team will face the Russian team, in the semi-finals of the European
Championship hosted by France. In the same stage of the competition, the host
country plays against the Netherlands. The Romanian handballers have also
secured their participation in the World Championship in Japan, next year. The
star and leader of the Romanian team, Cristina Neagu, dubbed the best scorer in
the history of European competitions, has unfortunately sustained an injury and
she will not be able to play.

Rumänien ist vorbereitet, die EU-Ratspräsidentschaft zu übernehmen

Nach dem Beitritt zur Europäischen Union am 1. Januar 2007 wird Rumänien zum ersten Mal die turnusmäßige Präsidentschaft des Rates der Europäischen Union ausüben. In der Folge wurde Premierminister Viorica Dancila in Brüssel vorgeladen, um sicherzustellen, dass die europäischen Beamten dafür sorgen, dass Rumänien seine Amtszeit erfolgreich durchstehen kann.

Nach der gemeinsamen Regierungssitzung der Regierung in Bukarest und der Europäischen Kommission am Mittwoch erinnerte dessen Präsident Jean-Claude Juncker daran, dass Rumänien im März den Brexit-Deal abschließen muss. Darüber hinaus muss die EU über die Grundlage des bevorstehenden Finanzrahmens entscheiden. In nur vier Monaten muss Rumänien 257 Akten bearbeiten, bevor die Kampagne für die Wahl des Europäischen Parlaments beginnt. Dabei sagte Jean-Claude Juncker:

Wir alle haben festgestellt, dass die rumänische Regierung auf diese Präsidentschaft gut vorbereitet ist. Rumänien hat eine schwierige Aufgabe vor uns, wir müssen uns auf die Basis des anstehenden Finanzrahmens einigen. “

Es gebe immer noch Unterschiede zwischen der rumänischen Regierung und der Europäischen Kommission in Bezug auf die Rechtsstaatlichkeit, fügte Präsident Juncker hinzu. Viorica Dancila wiederum sagte:

Rumänien ist sowohl ehrgeizig als auch realistisch in Bezug auf diese Präsidentschaft. Ehrgeizig in dem Sinne, dass wir möglichst viele Akten auf unserem Tisch einsetzen wollen, um eine politische Einigung über den mehrjährigen Finanzrahmen zu erzielen. Und realistisch, weil wir wissen, dass Rumänien ein unparteiischer Vermittler sein wird, der das Gleichgewicht und den Konsens fördert. Wir müssen einen Konsens unter den Mitgliedstaaten hinsichtlich der wichtigen Themen auf unserer Agenda haben. Europa ist in dieser Hinsicht gespalten, und es ist nicht leicht, einen Konsens zu erreichen.

Rumänien werde sein nationales strategisches Ziel, nämlich die Freizügigkeit seiner Bürger, weiter vorantreiben, sagte der rumänische Ministerpräsident weiter. Präsident Juncker äußerte auch die Hoffnung, dass Rumänien bis zum Ende seiner Amtszeit in den Schengen-Raum aufgenommen werde.

Das strategische Projekt Gebildetes Rumänien steht zur öffentlichen Debatte

Staatspräsident Klaus Iohannis hat am Donnerstag das Projekt Gebildetes Rumänien der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Ziel des Projekts ist, das rumänische Bildungswesen nach neuen Kriterien zu organisieren, die den Herausforderungen der Zukunft gerecht werden. Bei der Vorstellung des Projekts sagte der Staatspräsident Klaus Iohannis, das Projekt habe sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die rumänische Gesellschaft nach echten Werten neu zu organisieren und eine Erfolgskultur zu entwickeln, die auf Leistung, Arbeit, Talent, Ehrlichkeit und Integrität basieren sollte.

Drei Monate lang steht das Projekt zur öffentlichen Debatte; danach wird der Staatspräsident Verhandlungen mit den politischen Parteien führen, um das Projekt in die Regierungspolitik zu integrieren. Gebildetes Rumänien habe sich vorgenommen, ein stabiles, nachhaltiges, leistungsstarkes Bildungsystem für das 21. Jahrhundert zu schaffen, so Klaus Iohannis:

Gebildetes Rumänien ist ein strategisches Projekt, das die Grundlagen des Bildungssystems im Rumänien des 21. Jhs legen sollte. Gebildetes Rumänien ist kein Gesetzesprojekt, es ist kein einfaches Rezept. Gebildetes Rumänien ist keine rein politische Angelegenheit, es ist nicht mein Wahlprogramm. Gebildetes Rumänien ist eine Strategie für das Rumänien der Zukunft, für die nächsten Generationen.

Gebildetes Rumänien ist das größte bildungspolitische Projekt, das in Rumänien der öffentlichen Debatte gestellt wurde. An diesem Projekt arbeiteten mehr als 10.000 Fachleute und mehrere Dutzend Einrichtungen, Nichtregierungsorganisationen und Vertreter der Bildungsanstalten.

Rumäniens Damenteam zählt zu den Favoriten der Handball-Europameisterschaft

Während die Tennisspielerin Simona Halep Rumäniens unübertroffener Star im Einzelsport ist, ist beim Mannschaftssport der einzige Bereich, in dem die Rumänen hohe Erwartungen haben, der Damenhandball. Und 2018 ist vielleicht das beste Jahr. Bei den Europameisterschaften in Frankreich hatten die Mädchen bislang einen reibungslosen Verlauf und sind mit 4 Punkten in die Phase der Hauptgruppen vorgerückt. Rumänien ging an der Tschechischen Republik vorbei, einer Mannschaft, der sie bei der vorherigen Weltmeisterschaft eine Niederlage zugestanden hatten, ohne Probleme Deutschland besiegt und Norwegen, den verteidigenden Europameister, mehrfach Welt-, Europameister und Olympiasieger, Team, das als stärktes des Jahrzehnts im Frauenhandball gilt.

Die Teamleiterin und Weltklasse-Star Cristina Neagu zeigte ebenfalls eine hervorragende Leistung. Sie ist bereits die beste Torschützerin aller Zeiten bei einer Europameisterschaft. Alle Teammitglieder spielten jedoch bemerkenswert und verdienen erwähnt zu werden: Melinda Geiger, Eliza Buceschi, Crina Pintea, Laura Chiper, Denisa Dedu, Aneta Udristioiu, Ana-Maria Dragut, Gabriela Perianu, Madalina Zamfirescu, Cristina Laslo, Raluca Bacaoanu, Valentina Adrean Elisei, Cristina Florica.

Ein großer Teil des Verdiensts gehört auch dem, der ein so starkes Team zusammengestellt hat, nämlich dem spanischen Trainer Ambros Martin. Als Gewinner mehrerer Champions-League-Trophäen hofft er nun, auch mit einer Nationalmannschaft einen Titel zu gewinnen. Die anderen Gegner in den Hauptgruppen sind Spanien und Ungarn. Rumänien hat bisher nur eine europäische Medaille gewonnen, Bronze in der Saison 2010.

Romania in the main groups of European handball championships

Whereas tennis player Simona Halep is Romanias unrivaled star in individual sports, when it comes to team sports the only field in which Romanians have high expectations is womens handball. And 2018 might just be its best year. The girls have had a smooth path in the European Championships in France so far, and have advanced into the main group stage with the best possible score, 4 points.

Romania walked past the Czech Republic, a team to which they had conceded defeat in the previous world championship, beat Germany without problems and outclassed Norway, the defending European champions, several times world, European and Olympic champions and unanimously viewed as the strongest team of the decade in womens handball.

The enthusiasm triggered by this victory, the first against Norway in a final tournament in 18 years, had to do not so much with the score, 31-23, but rather with the manner in which the Romanian players had the match under control. It was a Norwegian-style victory, with a defense impossible to break through and with efficient and imaginative attacks. Goalie Yuliya Dumanska, a naturalized Ukrainian handballer, was acknowledged as the best player of the game, with an unbelievable 44% saves rate.

The team leader and world-class star Cristina Neagu also had an excellent performance. She is already the best scorer of all times at a European championship. But all team members played remarkably and deserve mentioning: Melinda Geiger, Eliza Buceschi, Crina Pintea, Laura Chiper, Denisa Dedu, Aneta Udristioiu, Ana-Maria Dragut, Gabriela Perianu, Madalina Zamfirescu, Cristina Laslo, Raluca Bacaoanu, Valentina Adrean Elisei, Cristina Florica.

A great part of the merit also belongs to the one that put together such a strong team, namely the Spanish coach Ambros Martin. A winner of several Champions League trophies, he now hopes to win a title with a national team as well. “We must take it step by step, one game at a time, we know very well what our goal is. We want to go to Tokyo, and if we win this European Championship, this goal will be achieved,” Martin said.

The team that wins the continental championship secures its qualification into the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan. Romania goes into the main group stage with the highest possible number of points, and has good chances to get to one of the top 2 positions and move forward into the semis. The next match is against Netherlands, a strong team that has also won 4 points in the previous stage of the competition. As Ambros Martin explained, “it will be hard, the Dutch have a similar style to the Norwegians, we need an excellent performance again. This will not be easy, because the girls have already made such an effort, but I hope their minds and motivation will be stronger than their tiredness.”

The other opponents in the main groups are Spain and Hungary. Romania has only won one European medal so far, a bronze in the 2010 season.

România, în grupele principale ale Europenelor de handbal feminin

Dacă la sporturi individuale, vedeta incontestabilă a României este Simona Halep, numărul unu în tenisul mondial, la sporturi de echipă singura de la care suporterii au constant aşteptări este naţionala feminină de handbal. Iar 2018 ar putea fi anul ei. “Tricolorele” au avut un parcurs fără sincope la Campionatul European din Franţa şi s-au calificat în grupele principale cu maximum de puncte, 4. România a învins fără emoţii Cehia, formaţie în faţa căreia pierduse la ultimul Mondial, a depaşit clar Germania şi a surclasat Norvegia, deţinătoarea titlului continental, multiplă campioană mondială, europeană şi olimpică, considerată unanim cea mai puternică echipă a ultimului deceniu în handbalul feminin.

Entuziasmul care a însoţit această victorie, prima în faţa Norvegiei la un turneu final după 18 ani, a fost generat nu atât de scorul categoric, 31-23, cât de modul în care româncele au controlat partida. A fost un succes în stil norvegian, obţinut cu o defensivă greu penetrabilă şi un atac variat şi eficient. Portarul Yuliya Dumanska, ucraineana naturalizată care a demonstrat că ştie imnul României, spre deosebire de mulţi fotbalişti autohtoni, a fost desemnată cea mai bună jucătoare a meciului, cu un procentaj neverosimil de mingi parate, 44%. Liderul echipei şi vedeta de talie mondială Cristina Neagu a făcut, la rândul ei, un meci excelent. Ea scrie, deja istorie, devenind cea mai bună marcatoare all time la un Campionat European.

Prestaţii remarcabile au avut toate componentele naţionalei: Melinda Geiger, Eliza Buceschi, Crina Pintea, Laura Chiper, Denisa Dedu, Aneta Udriştioiu, Ana-Maria Dragut, Gabriela Perianu, Mădălina Zamfirescu, Cristina Laslo, Raluca Băcăoanu, Valentina Ardean Elisei, Cristina Florică. Elogii – meritate – a primit, după meci, şi arhitectul acestei construcţii solide care este, acum, naţionala feminină de handbal, antrenorul spaniol Ambros Martin. El este câştigătorul mai multor Ligi ale Campionilor şi speră să obţină un titlu şi cu o echipă naţională. “Trebuie să o luăm pas cu pas, să ne gândim la următorul meci, știm foarte bine care este țelul nostru. Vrem să mergem la Tokyo, iar dacă vom câștiga acest Campionat European ne vom atinge țelul”, a spus Martin. La Tokyo, pentru că echipa care va lua titlul continental se califică automat la Olimpiada niponă din 2020.

Prin victoria cu Norvegia, România a intrat în grupa principală cu maxim de puncte şi are şanse mari să se claseze pe unul din primele două locuri, cele care asigură calificarea în semifinale. Următorul adversar va fi Olanda, o echipă puternică, calificată în grupa principala tot cu 4 puncte. “Va fi greu, Olanda are un joc asemănător cu cel al Norvegiei, va trebuie să facem din nou un supermeci. E complicat pentru că fetele au tras mult, sper ca motivația și mintea să fie mai puternice decât oboseala fizică”, a declarat Ambros Martin. Celelalte adversare vor fi Spania şi Ungaria. Naţionala României are în palmares o singură medalie continentală, bronzul caştigat în 2010.

COUNCIL OF THE EU – Less than a month before Romania’s taking
over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, PM Viorica Dăncilă has
today met with the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union, Jeppe
Tranholm-Mikkelsen. On this occasion,Viorica Dăncilă reiterated Bucharest’s commitment
to having an efficient Presidency, with a view to maintaining unity and
cohesion at community level. Also today, PM Viorica
Dăncilă alongside members of her cabinet
have presented the agenda and priorities of the Romanian presidency of the Council of the European Union. The
event was part of a joint meeting of the
Government of Romania and the College of Commissioners, which is traditionally
organised before a member state takes over the presidency of the Council of the
European Union. Romania’s motto for its
six month tenure of the presidency will be Cohesion, a common European value.
The cohesion policy is aimed at reducing economic, social and territorial gaps
or disparities among the member states, the regions and citizens of the
European Union. Also, Romania, will actively contribute to identifying the most
adequate common answers to such issues as the consolidation of the European
migration and asylum policy and managing challenges to European domestic
policy. Also, Great Britain’s withdrawal from the community bloc, the single
market and negotiations for the future multi-annual financial framework are
issues on the agenda of the meeting between the College of Commissioners and
the Government of Romania.

NATO – Romanian foreign minister Teodor Meleşcanu has travelled to Brussels to attend the meeting of the NATO foreign ministers. On Tuesday, he underlined the importance of going ahead with the process of adapting the Alliance to the current security challenges, in a coherent and inclusive way, also including the eastern flank of the Alliance. Teodor Meleşcanu has also expressed support for the ministerial declaration, adopted on the occasion of the meeting, which shows NATOs solidarity with the US on Washingtons conclusion on Russias having infringed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

EDUCATION – The results of the project “Educated Romania, initiated by Romanias President, Klaus Iohannis, are today being launched for public debate. According to the Presidential Administration, the project has been the most extensive and lengthy public consultation in education, that involved the participation of over 10,000 people. The priorities of the project, launched in 2016, refer to didactic career, educational management, equity, professional and technical education, higher education, the evaluation of pupils and students and early education. The site of the project will also be launched today, where the results will be made available for consultation and where all those interested are invited to leave their opinions and suggestions.

COMMEMORATION – The Romanians are today commemorating their last sovereign, king Michael I, who passed away at his residence in Switzerland, on December 5, 2017, at 96 years of age. A religious ceremony, organised by the family, was held at the Royal Resting Place in Curtea de Arges, in southern Romania, where all of Romanias kings are interred. The Senators in Bucharest have kept a moment of silence in memory of King Michael I. “It is a gesture of normalcy in the year of Great Union Centenary, when we should show respect to history and the people who have written it, the initiator of the proposal, Liberal Senator Mario Oprea has said. “He was a person whom I admired and respected the most, of all those whom I met along my entire life, said writer and political analyst Stelian Tănase, who has launched in Bucharest the volume “Conversations with King Michael, the transcript of 12 dialogues he had with the former sovereign in 2005.

RADIO – Radio Romania and Radio France have concluded
a four-year cooperation agreement. The document has been signed in Paris by the
presidents of the two public stations, Georgică Severin and Sibyle Veil. The
project is meant to tighten the sustainable relations between Romania and
France through cultural activities as well as exchange of journalists. The
President of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, Georgică Severin, has
underlined that Romania has remained a pole of Francophony and Fracophilia in
eastern Europe. According to Georgică Severin, Radio Romania will soon sign a similar
agreement with RAI and has reached an advanced stage of negotiations for a a
partnership with the BBC.

HANDBALL – Romanias national womens handball team is meeting in Brest this evening the European defending champion, Norway, in its last Group D match of the European Championship in France. Coached by the Spaniard Ambros Martin, the Romanian players won the first two matches of the final tournament, with the Czech Republic and Germany, and have already qualified to the next stage, called the main groups. The leader of the team, Cristina Neagu, has scored five goals in Mondays match with Germany, thus becoming the best scorer in the history of the European Championships, with 206 goals. Romania got the best result of the European final tournament in 2010, when it won bronze. (Translated by D. Vijeu)

New record for Cristina Neagu

The Romanian
women’s handball team had a perfect start at the European Championship underway
in France. Our team won the first two games and is now top of the tables in
Group D, having already secured qualification to the main group phase. In the
first game, last Saturday, Romania defeated the Czech Republic 31-28, thus
making amends for their loss last year, when the Czech Republic knocked out
Romania in the round of 16 at the World Cup. On Monday, Romania defeated
Germany 29-24. The game also marked a new record for our team captain, Cristina
Neagu. With five goals scored, she has now reached a total of 206 goals in
editions of the European Championship, an all-time high for this competition.
Neagu thus managed to outperform Agnes Farkas of Hungary, who withdrew from
international competitions, who ranked first with 205 goals. Ranking third was
Germany’s Grit Jurack, herself a retired player, with 194 goals.

Cristina Neagu
was born in Bucharest, on August 26, 1988. She made her debut at a local sport
club. As a youth player, she was several times designated best player in the
world, starting 2005, the year when Romania won silver at the European Youth
Championships in Austria. In 2006, as a senior player, she started playing for
Rulmentul Brasov, then she was signed by Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea. Then followed
several injuries for Cristina Neagu, which kept the player away from the field
for two years. After Oltchim was disbanded, Neagu transferred to Buducnost
Podgorica in Montenegro, a team with which she won the Champions League in
2015. Since 2017 she has been playing for CSM Bucharest.

Her track record
for the national squad includes a bronze medal at the European Championships in
Denmark and Norway in 2010 and another bronze medal at the World Cup in Brazil
in 2015. In 2010, 2015 and 2016 she was designated best player in the world by
the International Handball Federation. Neagu thus became the first handballer
in the world to win the award three times.

Nou record al handbalistei Cristina Neagu

Echipa de handbal feminin a României a început în forţă Campionatul European care se desfăşoară, în aceste zile, în Franţa. “Tricolorele” au câştigat primele două jocuri pe care le-au disputat. Ele ocupă locul întâi în grupa D şi sunt deja calificate pentru faza grupelor principale. În primul joc, sâmbăta trecută, România învins Cehia cu 31 la 28, luându-şi revanşa pentru înfrângerea de anul trecut, din optimile de finală ale Campionatului Mondial. Luni, a venit rândul Germaniei, de care handbalistele române au trecut clar, cu 29 la 24.

Această partidă a adus şi o nouă performanţă pentru căpitanul echipei naţionale a României, Cristina Neagu. Marcând cinci goluri, ea a ajuns la 206 reuşite în jocurile pe care le-a disputat la Campionatele Europene, record absolut al competiţiei. Neagu a devansat-o pe unguroaica Ágnes Farkas, retrasă din activitate, care avea 205 goluri. Pe locul 3 în acest top se află jucătoarea germană Grit Jurack, şi ea retrasă din handbal, cu 194 de goluri.

Cristina Neagu s-a nǎscut la Bucureşti, în data de 26 august 1988. A debutat la Clubul Sportiv Şcolar numărul 5. Ca junioare, a fost desemnată în mai multe rânduri cea mai bună jucătoare a lumii, începând cu anul 2005, când echipa României câştiga medaliile de argint la Europenele de junioare din Austria.

În 2006 a intrat în handbalul mare, la echipa Rulmentul Braşov, de unde a ajuns mai apoi la Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea. In 2010, cu echipa sa de club, Oltchim, a ajuns până în finala Ligii Campionilor. A avut apoi o serie de probleme de sănătate, lipsind doi ani din teren. După dizolvarea echipei Oltchim, a trecut la Buducnost Podgorica, formaţie cu care, în 2015, a câştigat Liga Campionilor. Din 2017 joacă la CSM Bucureşti.

În palmaresul ei cu Naţionala României, al cărei căpitan este din 2016, se află o medalie de bronz la Campionatul European din Danemarca şi Norvegia din 2010 şi un alt bronz la Mondialele din Brazilia din 2015. În 2010, 2015 şi 2016, Federaţia Internaţională de Handbal a desemnat-o cea mai bună jucătoare a lumii. A devenit astfel prima handbalistă din istorie câștigătoare de trei ori a acestui trofeu.

SCM Craiova gewinnt EHF-Pokal

In Rumänien ist Handball eine Tradition. Natürlich wetteifert es nicht mit dem Fußball, dem Königsspiel. Die Tradition wird nicht nur von der rumänischen Nationalmannschaft der Frauen, die immer bei den großen internationalen Wettkämpfen anwesend ist, sondern auch von den Vereinmannschaften bestätigt. Diese haben in den letzten Jahren besondere Ergebnisse bei den Spielen für die europäischen Pokale erzielt.

SCM Craiova hat am Freitag in dem Finale-Rückspiel für das EHF-Pokal das norvegische Damen-Team Vipers Kristiansand mit 30 zu 25 besiegt. Das Hinspiel wurde von Norvegen mit 26–22 gewonnen. SCM Craiova belegte den zweiten Platz der Gruppe, in der auch Brest (Frankreich), Kuban Krasnodar (Russland) und Randers (Dänemark) spielten. Im Viertelfinale besiegte es Lada Togliatti (Russland), die Favoritin des Wettkampfes und im Halbfinale die Türkinnen von Kastamonu. Craiova spielte mit einem Damenteam, das fast nur aus rumänischen Spielerinnen gebildet war. Es ist das erste europäische Pokal, das von SCM Craiova gewonnen wurde, sowie das erste EHF-Pokal des rumänischen Damen-Handballs. Der Wettkampf wurde aber unter dem alten Namen IHF-Pokal von Chimistul Râmnicu Vâlcea (1984, 1989) und von Rapid Bucureşti (1993) gewonnen.

Ebenfalls für das EHF-Pokal spielte ein anderes rumänisches Team HC Zalău. Die zwei rumänischen Mannschaften könnten im Halbfinale gegeneinander auftreten, wenn die Damen von HC Zalău die Türkinnen von Kastamonu besiegt hätten. Die Anwesendheit der Damen-Mannschaft CSM Bucureşti zum dritten Mal konsekutiv in dem sogenannten Final Four der Champions League in Budapest beweist, dass Rumänien eine Kraft im Handball ist. Obwohl die Erwartungen höher waren, musste sich CSM mit den Bronzemedaillen begnügen. Die Damen von CSM haben im Halbfinale das Spiel gegen das ungarische Team Gyor mit 20 -26 verloren. CSM gewann das Spiel für den dritten Platz gegen die Russinnen von Rostov mit 31 – 30. Die diesjährige Auflage wurde von Gyor gewonnen, die ihren Titel vor Vardar Skopje (Macedonia) verteidigte. Das Spiel endete 27 – 26.

Die Enttäuschung war für CSM, die 2016 die Trophae erzielte, riesig. Cristina Neagu wurde zum zweiten Mal mit 110 Toren zur Torjägerin der Tournee ernannt.

Romanian handball teams in European inter-club competitions

Although not as popular as football, Romanian handball has a long history. In recent years, not just the Romanian national women’s team grabbed notable results, but also individual clubs, which have won important European inter-club competitions. CSM Craiova on Friday won the EHF Cup after defeating 30-25 Vipers Kirstiansand of Norway on home turf in the second leg of the final. In the first leg the Norwegian team had won 26-22. CSM finished second in the group, which also included Brest of France, Kuban Krasnodar of Russia and Denmark’s Randers. In the quarterfinals, Craiova eased past Lada Togliatti of Russia, seeded first in the competition, and knocked out Kastamonu of Turkey in the semi-finals.

SCM’s feat is all the more praiseworthy as the team has this season undergone major changes, most of the players being homegrown. This was the first European title for SCM and the first EHF Cup won by a Romanian team in the competition’s latest format. Previously, Chimistul Ramnicu Valcea won the IHF Cup in 1984 and 1989, while Rapid Bucharest won the competition in 1993. Also in this year’s edition of the EHF Cup, another Romanian team, HC Zalau, had a very good run. The two teams could have played each other in the semis, but Zalau was edged out by Turkey’s Kastamonu.

Further evidence of the power of Romanian handball is CSM Bucharest’s qualification, for the third consecutive year, to the Champions League Final Four tournament, this year hosted by Budapest. Although the expectations were high, CSM had to settle for the bronze medal. In the semi-finals, the team from Bucharest lost 20-26 to Hungary’s Gyor, which went on to defend their title in the final against Macedonia’s Vardar Skopje, 27-26. CSM won however the bronze final match against Russia’s Rostov Don, 31-30. Despite the disappointment, CSM’s Cristina Neagu was designated the competition’s top scorer with a total of 110 goals this season. This is the second time the award goes to Neagu, who so far has been designated the world’s best handballer three times.

Echipa de handbal masculin a României se
află în faţa unui nou examen. De joi, la Bolzano, în Italia, tricolorii
participă la prima fază a preliminariilor Campionatului Mondial de anul viitor.
Formaţia română face parte din grupa a treia, alături de Italia, Ucraina şi
Insulele Feroe. Primul joc este cel cu Italia, programat joi. Urmează
confruntarea cu Feroe, vineri, apoi partida cu Ucraina, care va avea loc
sâmbătă. Merg mai departe doar câştigătoarele celor şase grupe preliminare.
Acestea vor juca, în luna iunie, în play-off-ul pentru turneul final din
Germania şi Danemarca.

Trecem la handbal feminin. Cristina Neagu,
jucătoarea Naţionalei României şi a echipei CSM Bucureşti, a fost aleasă cea
mai bună jucătoare a anului 2017 în Europa. Acesta este rezultatul unei anchete
a Federaţiei Europene de Handbal, realizată pe baza votului fanilor, pe
Internet. Cristina Neagu a primit 52% din voturi. Ea a fost urmată de
jucătoarea maghiară Anita Görbicz, cu 38%.

Narcisa Lecuşanu, fostă componentă a
naţionalei României, a anunţat marţi, pe pagina sa oficială de Facebook, că ar
putea candida la preşedinţia Federaţiei Române de Handbal la alegerile din luna
februarie, anunţă Agerpres. Pe parcursul unei cariere de aproape 20 de ani, a
evoluat la echipe de top precum Ştiinţa Bacău, Aalborg şi Oltchim Râmnicu
Vâlcea. Din 2016, Narcisa Lecuşanu face parte din Comitetul Executiv al
Federaţiei Europene de Handbal (EHF). În luna noiembrie 2017, ea a fost aleasă
şi în Comitetul Executiv al Federaţiei Internaţionale de Handbal (IHF). A mai
ocupat funcţiile de vicepreşedinte al Federaţiei Române de Handbal şi de
secretar de Stat în Ministerul român al Tineretului şi Sportului.

PSD — The executive committee of the Social Democratic Party, the main party in the governing coalition, will meet on Monday in Bucharest, high on the agenda being the nomination of a new minister of waters and forests, after on Wednesday the incumbent minister Doina Pană stepped down invoking medical reasons. According to party sources they might also tackle the organization of an extraordinary congress, the designation of the future candidate for next year’s presidential election as well as a possible restructuring of the government. The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of speculations regarding the souring relations between the PSD leader Liviu Dragnea and the PM Mihai Tudose.

Justice — Romanian NGOs called on President Klaus Iohannis, in an open letter, made public on Sunday, to mediate the current conflict between the state and the society. The 19 signatory civic groups claim that the political power is trying to undermine the anti-corruption fight, to endanger the prosecutors’ independence and to subordinate the judiciary. The NGOs want the president to call on the Venice Commission, which should clarify whether the modifications brought to the justice laws that Parliament adopted last December are compatible with the fundamental standards of the rule of law. The recent modifications wanted by the governing coalition made up of the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats were contested by part of civil society, by the rightwing opposition and by some magistrates. The protesters say that the laws, in their new form, violate the Constitution and are rather confusing. On the contrary, the power claims that the laws had not been revised in the past 13 years, thus giving rise to deviations related to the careers of magistrates and allowing abuses by prosecutors and judges.

Bucharest — The embassy of Palestine in Bucharest hails the declaration made by President Klaus Iohannis, which reiterates the stand of the Romanian state on the status of Jerusalem. According to a press release, ambassador Fuad Kokaly believes that, through its decision of not considering a legitimate option moving its embassy to Jerusalem, Romania once again proves respect for the law principles and the international law. The declaration follows Friday’s phone conversation between Klaus Iohannis and the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, when the Romanian president said that Jerusalem was a central topic of the Middle East peace negotiations and that its status should be established following a direct agreement between Israelis and Palestinians. Romania also underlined the need for a correct and long-standing resolution of the conflict, by implementing the solution of the two states, Israel and Palestine, which should coexist in peace and security, as the only viable solution. Consequently, a possible decision on moving Romania’s Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem may me made only based on the aforementioned conditions. During the phone conversation, President Iohannis reiterated that Romania continued to support the development, consolidation and diversification of relations with Israel, which have a strategic nature. The Israeli PM thanked Romania for having abstained from vote last month, when the UN General Assembly condemned the recognition of Jerusalem by the US as the capital of Israel.

Handball — Woman handball player Cristina Neagu, a member of Romania’s national team and of CSM Bucharest was chosen best player of 2017 following a survey made by the European Handball Federation and based on the vote of more than 40 thousand fans. Cristina Neagu is the winner with 52%, being followed by Hungarian player Anita Gorbicz with 38%. Norwegian Nora Mork got 4% of the votes, Iveta Luzumova of the Czech Republic got 3% and Katarina Bulatovic of Montenegro got only 1%. As part of the same survey, fans designated Croat Luka Cindric as best male handball player of 2017. Cristina Neagu, also voted best handballer of the world in 2016, has recently won, for the 5th consecutive time, the title of best Romanian handball player.

Saint John the Baptist — Romanian Orthodox and Greek Catholic believers on Sunday celebrated the feast of Saint John the Baptist, the last prophet of the Old Testament. He baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan and called his the Redeemer. As many as 2 million Romanians celebrated their name day on Sunday. Also on Sunday Orthodox old-rite believers belonging to the Russian, Ukrainian and Serbian communities celebrated Christmas, 13 days later than the day marked in the Gregorian calendar.

Berlin — The German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday launched a new round of talks with a view to forming a government coalition, which should put an end to a prolonged political deadlock. More than 3 months after the parliamentary elections, Germany does not have a new government yet. The talks, scheduled to last for 5 days, will be attended by representatives of the Christian Democratic Union, Mrs. Merkel’s party, of the Christian Social Party and of the Social Democratic Party. Commentators consider these talks as the last chance for the formation of a stable governing coalition.
