moment, Voluntari are 5th-placed in Group 2, with 26 points. FC

PARIS PROTESTS — Outbreaks of violence were reported on Saturday, on Paris’s Champs Elysées, where thousands of ’yellow vests’ gathered for the 18th weekend of protests against the French government’s fiscal and social policy. They set life-threatening fires, smashed up luxury stores and clashed with police firing tear gas and water cannon. Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on French television that an estimated 10,000 protesters were protesting in Paris and another 4,500 around France. That was up from about 3,000 protesters in Paris last weekend. The violence comes after a two-month national debate that President Emmanuel Macron organized to respond to protesters concerns about sinking living standards, high unemployment, stagnant wages and general income inequality.

EPP SUMMIT – The elections for the European Parliament in May are held in a symbolic year that marks 30 years since the fall of the totalitarian regimes, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said Saturday in Bucharest at the summit of the European People’s Party (EPP). Europe cannot go back in time and voting remains the best way of sanctioning the populist and demagogical discourse that has become so virulent, the Romanian President went on to say. Iohannis resumed criticism levelled at the Social Democratic Party, the main party in the government coalition, which he says displays a false patriotism by trying to induce people the idea that Europe is a threat, which is a cynical and irresponsible way of making politics, President Iohannis has pointed out. According to the National Liberal Party, a member of the European People’s Party (PPE) and the main opposition party in Romania, the summit in Bucharest enjoys the participation of over 150 mayors and regional leaders from the EU as well as of 3,000 mayors from Romania. The EPP candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, Manfred Weber, will present his vision on the future of the EU and the structure of the EPP program for the EC’s presidency.

PSD — The leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the main party of the leftist ruling coalition in Romania, on Saturday at a meeting of one of the local branches, said his party invokes patriotism because this is an issue that bothers certain people. There are politicians, Dragnea said, who do not want to upset the leaders in Brussels. The Social Democratic EMPs must have the courage and determination of a Romanian patriot, and must fight for programs that support Romania. Dragnea took the occasion to blame again President Klaus Iohannis for the delays in adopting the 2019 budget bill which had been promulgated on Friday.

ATTACK – The 28-yer old Australian Brenton Turrant, the main suspect of the attack on two mosks in Christchurch, New Zealand, that left 49 people dead, appeared in Court on Saturday morning on a single murder charge. Further charges are expected to be made against him. Tarrant was described by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as an “extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist”. New Zealand’s PM Jacinda Ardern said the suspect had a firearms licence and owned five guns. Ardern said the guns used by the attacker appeared to have been modified, and that the suspects car was full of weapons, suggesting “his intention to continue with his attack”. Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, she said the suspect had obtained a gun licence in November 2017 that allowed him to buy the weapons used in the attack.

S&P – Standard & Poors (S&P) has reconfirmed Romania’s rating at BBB-/A-3 for the long and short-term debt in domestic and foreign currency, and also the stable outlook. S&P forecasts, on the other hand, that Romania’s economy will slow down even more in 2019, to 3.5%, due to reduced foreign demand and less private investment. Improving the country rating, S&P says, depends on the progress made in adopting the institutional reforms and the degree to which Romania manages to increase domestic investment, by absorbing European funds for example.

TENNIS – The extraordinary run of teenager Bianca Andreescu, a Canadian of Romanian origin, continues at the BNP Paribas Open, as she knocked off No.6 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to advance to the second final of her season and career at Indian Wells. In the first meeting between the two players, 18-year-old Andreescu survived two hours and 12 minutes of momentum shifts before claiming her second Top 10 win and increasing her outstanding win-loss record for the year to 27-3 across all levels. “Im actually shaking right now,” said an emotional Andreescu, to open her post-match press conference. “Its just so incredible. Im honestly speechless,” Andreescu has said. (Translated by Elena Enache)

    BUDGET -
Parliament is today re-examining the 2019 draft budget. President Iohannis sent
the bill back to Parliament after the Constitutional Court ruled against his
objections tied to its elaboration. The ruling coalition has announced it won’t
make any modification, as the current dispositions ensure the necessary
resources for the most important economic fields. The President said budget
allocations are based on unrealistic estimates, affecting the functioning of
key public institutions as well as the development of local communities and the
implementation of strategic investments. Klaus Iohannis on Monday ratified the
social security budget for 2019, so that pensioners should not suffer from what
he has called the incompetence of the Social-Democratic Party.

    MUSEUM -
Romania’s Prime Minister Viorica Dancila said Romania pays special attention to
combating anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia and hate speech. The Romanian official
attended the conference titled The Future of Memory: The National Museum of
Jewish and Holocaust History in Romania. Viorica Dancila said this museum will
contribute to educating society and owning to some difficult moments in the
past. The Prime Minister said effective measures must be taken to combat
anti-Semitism and make sure Jews can live in safety in Europe. The Conference

and exceeded 10 Petawatts, a new world record. Experts believe this project can
pave the way for countless vistas of scientific research. The authorities in
Bucharest have congratulated the team of Romanian and foreign researchers. The
Government says it supported this complex project, one of the most important
European research facilities built with EU and national funds.

    BREXIT -
The British Parliament is today voting on a no-deal Brexit after the House of
Commons yesterday voted against an agreement with the EU on Brexit for the
second time. If British MPs vote for a no-deal Brexit, London will most likely
call for a postponement of their withdrawal from the community bloc, originally
scheduled for March 29. Prime Minister Theresa May expressed her deep regret
with Tuesday’s vote and what she has termed the best and only possible deal.
EU Chief Negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier reacted to Tuesday’s vote, saying
the EU has done everything in its power to ensure the deal goes through and
that only London authorities can overcome this deadlock. European Council
President Donald Tusk in turn said the UK must come up with a good explanation
as regards any delay. In Bucharest, Minister Delegate for European Affairs
George Ciamba said the authorities will continue their efforts to protect the rights
of Romanian citizens in the UK and of British citizens in Romania.

Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases. The latest victim is a
68-year-old woman from Galati County infected with the type A flu virus. She
had no previous medical problems and had not taken the anti-flu vaccine.
According to the National Institute for Public Health, some 1.3 million people
have taken the anti-flu vaccine this season.

    MOTION -
The right-wing opposition has filed a simple motion against Finance Minister
Eugen Teodorovici, to be debated on Monday in the Chamber of Deputies and voted
on Wednesday. Titled The Social-Democratic greed undermines national economy,
the document says the latest emergency decree introducing additional taxes for
banks, energy and telecom companies harms the country’s economy, and the
ministers responsible must be held accountable in Parliament.

    MEETING -
Romanian Foreign Ministry Teodor Melescanu met with the Speaker of the
Parliament of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, who is on a visit to Bucharest.
Teodor Melescanu reiterated Romania’s support for North Macedonia’s European
accession efforts. Talat Xhaferi’s visit coincides with the Senate’s vote on
the ratification of North Macedonia’s NATO accession protocol, scheduled to
take place today. The vote is the final step in the process of adopting the law
ratifying the protocol, after the Chamber of Deputies cast its vote in
    February.

Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands was ousted by Novak
Djokovic of Serbia and Fabio Fognini of Italy.

RUSSIA – The British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday that Moscows response to the sanctions decided by London did not change the facts of the matter, namely Russia part in the poisoning of the former Russian spy Serghei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England. Theresa May stated that Great Britain would decide the next steps in the coming days, together with its international allies, following Russias decision on Saturday to expel 23 British diplomats. On Saturday morning, the UK ambassador to Russia was summoned by the Russian Foreign Ministry for the second time this week. Russia has also decided to stop any activity of the British Council on Russian soil. The British Council is the United Kingdoms international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities. The measures were announced just one day before the presidential elections in Russia, as a result of which Vladimir Putin would get his fourth term. According to France Presse, the Kremlin is worried that a low turnout would weaken the legitimacy of the otherwise predictable outcome. Putin has been heading Russia for 18 years, as president and once as a prime-minister. His main opponent, Alexei Navalny, has been deemed non-eligible because of a criminal conviction in a case which, he says, was staged by the Russian authorities. Navalny has called on the population to boycott Sundays elections.

TENNIS – The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, number one in the WTA rankings, has failed to qualify for the final of the Indian Wells tournament in California, with 8 million dollars in prize money, as she was defeated by the Japanese Naomi Osaka in two sets: 6-3, 6-0. CVM — EU officials on Thursday met in Bucharest with representatives of the Romanian judiciary, the Parliament and Government as part of the assessment mission within the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification. The assessment mission will come to an end on Friday. The Justice Ministry officials have pointed out that talks are focusing on the analysis of recommendations, on the criminal and criminal procedure codes, the civil and civil procedure codes, and on the development strategy of the judiciary. The MCV was introduced in January 2007 upon Romania’s and Bulgaria’s EU accession, to support the two countries in order to overcome shortcomings in the reform of the judiciary and the anti-corruption fight. The Romanian authorities would like the MCV to be removed in 2019.

Poisoning — Great Britain, Germany, France and the US on Thursday made a joint declaration in which they claim that Russia’s responsibility is the only plausible explanation in the case of the nerve agent attack against a Russian double agent and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury last week. The leaders of the 4 countries called on Moscow to provide all information related to its chemical weapons program Novichok, given that this is the first time when a nerve agent of military use is used in Europe, after WWII. The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, labeled the accusations as rude and ungrounded. Moscow announced it was preparing to reply after London’s decision to expel 23 Russian diplomats. NATO considers the incident a clear violation of international norms and agreements on chemical weapons and the EU leaders will discuss next week the poisoning of the former Russian spy. The Romanian Foreign Ministry announced Romania’s solidarity with Great Britain.

Slovakia — The EU called on Slovakia to shed light on the assassination of the investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and to cooperate with the European Antifraud Office. The journalist was shot dead in February together with his girlfriend while he was conducting an investigation into a case of high-level corruption. In his last, unfinished article, Jan Kuciak wrote about alleged relations between Slovak politicians and Italian businesspeople suspected of links with the Calabria mafia. On Thursday the president of Slovakia accepted the resignation of PM Robert Fico, which he had handed in one day before, and announced early parliamentary elections for the second half of May. Previously, tens of thousands of people went out in the streets to protest against corruption and to ask for Fico’s resignation.

Moskau kündigte umgehend “Vergeltungsma‎ßnahmen” an.
