    DEFENCE – Romania has met all its commitments to NATO, the Romanian Defence Minister Mihai Fifor said on Saturday. He added that the US President Donald Trumps request for the other Allied countries to also earmark 2% of their GDP to defence is justified. This is the second consecutive year when Romania allots these funds to defence, Fifor explained. He also mentioned that nearly 700 Romanian troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan, and the major Army equipment upgrade projects undertaken by Romania upon joining NATO are reaching their final stages.




    MUSEUMS – Scores of Romanian museum employees Saturday protested in front of the Ministry of Culture and National Identity headquarters. They say salaries do not reflect the importance, responsibility and complexity of their work, and some of them have lost incomes since the implementation of the unified pay scheme for public sector employees and the transfer of social security payments from employers to employees. The Culture Ministry announced in a news release that several meetings have been held recently with trade unions in the sector, and solutions to their problems are being searched for. The protests came ahead of the 14th edition of the famous Long Night of Museums, in which 180 museums and partner organisations in Romania are taking part. In Bucharest, taking part in the event are the National Art Museum of Romania, the National History Museum, the George Enescu National Museum, the Grigore Antipa Natural History Museum, and the Romanian Peasant Museum. Exhibitions, concerts and film screenings have been put together, for all ages and for all tastes.





    ROYAL WEDDING – The historical city of Windsor, near London, Saturday hosted the wedding of Price Harry of Wales, grandson to Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, with his fiancée, the 36 year old American actress Meghan Markle. The official ceremony combined the elegance of the royal protocol with the glamour of Hollywood events. Thousands of people gathered on Saturday morning in the usually quiet town, to celebrate the princely couple. Buckingham Palace previously announced that Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain granted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.




    DIASPORA – The second regional consular meeting in the campaign entitled “2018 Dialogue with the Diaspora on consular topics ended in Rome on Saturday. According to a news release issued by the Romanian Foreign Ministry in Bucharest, taking part in the event were representatives of the Romanian diplomatic missions and consular offices in Italy, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Switzerland, Montenegro and Israel. Talks focused on topics related to consular activities, particularly the handling of the situations that require the activation of the Foreign Ministry Crisis Response Task Force, as well as the use of the IT systems that are part of the E-Cons integrated platform, which currently services the entire consular network of the Romanian Foreign Ministry.




    CHISINAU – The Republic of Moldova Sunday holds the first round of early elections for the mayors of capital city Chisinau and the second-largest Moldovan town of Balti, in the north. The posts have been vacant since the resignation of the mayors elected in June 2015, namely the pro-European Liberal Dorin Chirtoaca in Chisinau and the pro-Russian populist Renato Usatii in Balti. Both officials claimed the trials were political shams. These early elections are seen as a test for this autumns parliamentary election. Analysts quoted by Radio Romania correspondents, say Sundays vote for a new mayor of Chisinau, where one-third of the countrys population lives and which generates half of Moldovas GDP, is also important in geo-political terms, given the competition between pro-Russian and pro-European politicians in this country.




    FUNERALS – The funerals of the great Romanian film director Lucian Pintilie were held in Bucharest on Saturday. Pintilie died on Wednesday at the age of 84. His staging of the Inspector General (1972), as well as his films The Reconstruction and For Whom the Bell Tolls, Mitică, were banned by the communist censorship. In 1973, he left for Paris, where he continued his career. After the fall of communism, he returned to Romania and made a series of films, mostly Romanian-French co-productions, one of which, “Too Late (1996), was included in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival.




    CONFERENCE – Former East-European political leaders pleaded in Bucharest on Saturday for dialogue as a means to promote security in the Korean Peninsula. Chairing the meeting designed to support a peaceful reunification of Korea, Emil Constantinescu, president of Romania in 1996-2000, emphasised the importance of cultural diplomacy between the 2 countries. The ex-president of Albania, Rexhep Meidani, believes recent developments to be encouraging, including the prospective meeting of the US President Donald Trump with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. Also attending the conference in Bucharest are, among others, the former presidents of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, of Belarus, Stanislav Shushkevich, and of Croatia, Stjepan Mesic.




    HANDBALL – The Romanian mens handball team AHC Potaissa of Turda (in north-western Romania) Sunday faces the Greek side AEK Athens, away from home, in the decisive leg of the Challenge Cup final. On Monday, the Romanians won the first leg, at home, 33-22. According to commentators, Potaissa, which last year lost the final of the same competition to Sporting Lisbon, is a step away from winning the trophy. At the end of last week, the Romanian womens team SCM Craiova won the EHF Cup final, defeating the Norwegian side Vipers Kristiansand, while Romanian champions, CSM Bucharest, won the bronze in the so-called Champions League Final Four in Budapest.

    Präsident Klaus Iohannis erwartet am Donnerstag den offiziellen Besuch seines französischen Kollegen Emmanuel Macron. Die beiden hatten im Juni beim Europäischen Rat in Brüssel das Treffen vereinbart. Bei dem Anlass hatte Iohannis bekräftigt, dass Rumänien nach wie vor ein solider Partner Frankreichs bleiben und gemeinsam mit Paris das europäische Projekt neu entfalten wolle. Bei den Gesprächen am Donnerstag in Bukarest soll es um die Vertiefung und Erweiterung der bilateralen Beziehungen und strategischen Partnerschaft gehen — auch die wichtigsten europäischen und internationalen Themen sowie Sicherheitsfragen stehen auf der Gesprächsagenda. Im wirtschaftlichen Bereich wollen Iohannis und Macron mögliche Anreize für den Handelsaustausch erörtern, einschlie‎ßlich durch ein breiteres Kooperationsspektrum in diesem Bereich. Vor dem Hintergrund der traditionellen Nähe zwischen den beiden Staaten wird es in Bukarest auch um die Zusammenarbeit während der sogenannten Kultursaison Rumänien-Frankreich 2018-2019 gehen.



    Rumänien sei nach Angaben von Au‎ßenminister Teodor Meleşcanu eher ein Transitland für Migranten — die Anzahl der hier anfallenden Flüchtlinge sei gering, die Menschen drängten nach Mittel- und Nordeuropa, so der Au‎ßenminister. Rumänien habe zwar Pflichtquoten zur Umverteilung der Flüchtlinge abgelehnt, werde jedoch seine Pflicht als EU-Mitglied tun, sagte er. Grenzpolizisten der rumänischen Küstenwache in Constanţa im Südosten des Landes haben inzwischen am Wochenende 70 illegale Migranten aus Syrien und dem Irak in einem Fischkutter aufgegriffen. Das ist der bereits zweite Zwischenfall mit versuchter illegaler Einreise in den letzten acht Tagen. Laut einem Sprecher der Küstenwache seien die Migranten, darunter auch 23 Kinder, zur Schiffsstation im südöstlichen Mangalia hingebracht worden. Am 13. August war ein weiteres Boot unter türkischer Flagge mit 69 illegalen irakischen Migranten an Bord von einer Streife der Küstenwache in rumänischen Gewässern aufgefangen worden. Die Schleuser, ein Bulgare und ein Zyprer, waren festgenommen worden.



    Nach den Anschlägen von Barcelona und Cambrils hat die Polizei in der Nähe der katalanischen Hauptstadt am Montag einen Mann erschossen. Nach Angaben aus Ermittlerkreisen könnte es sich dabei um den Fahrer des Lieferwagens handeln, der den Anschlag in Barcelona verübt hatte. Nach dem mutma‎ßlichen Attentäter von Barcelona wurde europaweit gefahndet. Er hatte nach Überzeugung der Ermittler am Donnerstag einen wei‎ßen Lieferwagen gezielt in eine Menschenmenge auf Barcelonas bekanntem Boulevard Las Ramblas gefahren. Die Zahl der Opfer der Terroranschläge in Spanien ist am Montag auf 15 gestiegen, nachdem die Polizei einen erstochenen Mann in einem verdächtigen Auto gefunden hatte, das in Zusammenhang mit dem Fall stehen könnte.



    Inmitten schwerer Spannungen mit Nordkorea haben die USA am Montag ihr jährliches gemeinsames Militärmanöver mit Südkorea begonnen. Nordkorea fühlt sich durch das Manöver bedroht. Südkoreas Präsident wies nordkoreanische Vorwürfe der Kriegstreiberei zurück und versicherte, die Übung sei “rein defensiver Natur”. Im Konflikt um das nordkoreanische Atom- und Raketenprogramm hatte sich der Ton zwischen Washington und Pjöngjang zuletzt deutlich verschärft. US-Präsident Donald Trump drohte Nordkorea mit einem Militäreinsatz. Daraufhin erklärte Pjöngjang, einen Raketenangriff auf Ziele vor der Pazifikinsel Guam vorzubereiten. Zuletzt rückte Nordkorea von dieser Drohung aber wieder ab.

    Bukarest: Das rumänische Au‎ßenministerium hat den nordkoreanischen Raketentest scharf verurteilt und an die Behörden in Pjöngjang appelliert, die international gültigen Vorschriften zu beachten und jede Aktion zu vermeiden, die die Sicherheit der koreanischen Halbinsel und der ganzen Welt gefährden könnte. Der Sicherheitsrat der Vereinten Nationen ist angesichts des nordkoreanischen Raketentests zu einer Sondersitzung zusammengekommen und hat die Aktion Pjöngjangs scharf verurteilt. In einer gemeinsamen Erklärung hat sich der UN-Sicherheitsrat verpflichtet, eine neue Resolution zu verabschieden, die demnächst die Sanktionen gegen Pjöngjang verschärfen soll. Nordkorea verwende die Technologie der ballistischen Langstreckenraketen und entwickele nukleare Interkontinentalraketen, die das US-amerikanische Territorium erreichen könnten, hei‎ßt es in der Erklärung des UN-Sicherheitsrates.



    Bukarest: Das korrekte Organisieren der Kommunal- und Parlamentswahlen in Rumänien ist eine Priorität des jetzigen Regierungskabinetts, und der Vorgang wird gemä‎ß der geltenden Gesetzgebung stattfinden. Dies erklärte am Montag der rumänische Ministerpräsident Premier Dacian Cioloş, der an der Debatte ”Die Stunde des Premierministers” teilgenommen hat. Es handelte sich um die von den Liberalen geforderten Gespräche zum Thema Wahlgesetz. Die Liberalen plädieren nach wie vor dafür, dass bei den Kommunalwahlen, die dieses Jahr stattfinden sollen, das Zwei-Wahlrunden-System wiedereingeführt wird. Bei dem Treffen sagte Ministerpräsident Ciolos, die Parteien, die das Wiedereinführen des Zwei-Wahlrunden-Systems bei der Kommunalwahl dieses Jahr wünschen, die Debatte darüber führen sollten, anstatt die Schuld auf das Regierungskabinett zu schieben, weil es keine Eilverordnung in diesem Sinne erlassen hat. Eine Eilverordnung dazu zu erlassen sei nicht demokratisch und die entsprechende Entscheidung sollte im Parlament getroffen werden, bekräftigte Regierungschef Cioloş. Nach den jüngsten Beratungen mit den Parlamentsparteien gab es keine feste Position über die Kommunalwahl im Zwei-Wahlgang-System, so Ciolos. In punkto Briefwahl sei die Exekutive darum bemüht, den Wahlgang für die im Ausland lebenden Rumänen gemä‎ß der neuen Gesetzgebung zu organiseren. Die Regierung bereite ein Paket mit Sekundärgesetzgebung vor, das in nächster Zeit verabschiedet werden sollte, sagte noch der rumänische Ministerpräsident. Bei der Präsidentenwahl im Jahr 2014 konnten die im Ausland lebenden Rumänen wegen der schlechten Organisation der Wahlgänge ihr Wahlrecht nicht ausüben.



    Brüssel: Die Verteidigungsminister der NATO-Länder treffen sich am Mittwoch und Donnerstag in Brüssel, um die wichtigsten Fragen der NATO-Verteidigungspolitik zu besprechen. Rumänien wird bei dem Treffen vom Verteidigungsminister Mihnea Motoc vertreten. Neulich hatte NATO-Generalsekretär Jens Stoltenberg bekanntgegeben, dass die Vereinigten Staaten die Unterstützung der Nordatlantischen Allianz für die Bemühungen der internationalen Gemeinschaft im Kampf gegen die Terror-Organisation Islamischer Staat gefordert hätten. Ferner äu‎ßerte Stoltenberg seine Besorgnis betreffend die Luftangriffe Russlands gegen Syrien. Besagte Luftangriffe würden die Bemühungen um eine politische Lösung des syrischen Konflikts unterminieren, so Stoltenberg. Beim Treffen der NATO-Verteidigungsminister diese Woche werden die Teilnehmer auch über die Situation der militärischen Missionen der Nordatlantischen Allianz in Afghanistan, über den politisch-militärischen Konflikt in Libyen und über das Organisieren des NATO-Gipfeltreffens in Warschau diskutieren.



    Bukarest: Dezember 2015 sei der durchschnittliche Bruttolohn nominell um 10% gegenüber dem Vormonat gestiegen und belief sich somit auf 2.930 Lei (umgerechnet rund 650 Euro), teilt das Nationale Statistikamt mit. Einen ähnlichen Anstieg verzeichnete auch der durchschnittliche Nettolohn, der somit im Monat Dezember bei 2.114 lei (rund 470 Euro) lag. Die grö‎ßte Lohnsteigerung gab es bei Erdölverarbeitung und bei der Erzeugung von Koks, während niedrigere Durchschnittslöhne im Hotel-und Gastronomieindustrie verzeichnet wurden. Der durschnittliche Nettolohn sei gegenüber Monat Dezember des Vorjahres nominell um mehr als 13% gestiegen, so das Nationale Statistikamt.



    Sport: Die rumänische Nationalmannschaft im Damentennis hat in der ersten Runde des Fed Cups gegen Tschechien verloren. Im letzten Spiel hat sich das Paar Karolina Pliskova (Nummer 13 in der WTA-Rangliste) / Barbora Strycova (Platz 41 WTA) mit 6-2, 6-3 gegen die Rumäninnen Andreea Mitu (96 WTA) / Raluca Olaru durchgesetzt. In den ersten zwei Spielen hatte auch die Weltranglistendritte Simona Halep gegen Karolina Pliskova mit 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 verloren, während Monica Niculescu (Platz 37 in der WTA-Rangliste) mit 6-3, 6-4 Petra Kvitova bezwungen hatte. Am Sonntag setzte sich Halep gegen Kvitova (Platz 37 in der WTA-Rangliste) mit 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 durch, während Monica Niculescu im Spiel gegen die Tschechin Karolina Pliskova mit 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 verlor. Somit verpasste die rumänische Nationalmannschaft den Einzug ins Halbfinale. Der amtierende Meister Tschechien, der in den letzten fünf Jahren den Wettbewerb vier Mal erobert hatte, trifft im Halbfinale des Fed Cups auf die Schweiz.

    DIPLOMACY – Romanias relationship with Germany is strategic, and the visit made to Berlin on Thursday by the Romanian delegation headed by PM Dacian Cioloş proves the importance and attention that Bucharest pays to this country, said the Foreign Minister Lazăr Comănescu in an interview to Radio Romania News and Current Affairs. The Romanian official added that next week he would once again travel to Berlin, for a bilateral visit. Lazar Comanescu highlighted the importance of Germany as the economic engine of Europe, and as a partner of Romania. According to the Foreign Minister, over 20% of Romanias foreign trade involves Germany. He also explained that more than 20,000 companies running on German capital operate in Romania and have created more than 300,000 jobs here.



    PROTESTS – In several cities in Romania, protests are taking place today to express support for the Bodnariu family, whose children were taken in November 2015 by child protection authorities in Norway. Solidarity marches will also take place in Italy, Netherlands, and Belgium. Yesterday, Romanian and Norwegian officials discussed this topic in Bucharest, and agreed to work together to settle the issue. The Ambassador of Romania to Oslo will have a meeting on January 13 with representatives of Norways Ministry for Children, Equality and Social Inclusion. A parliamentary delegation made up of members of the Committee on Romanian communities abroad will make a visit to Norway between January 18 and 22, to discuss the case. The Norwegian social services took the 5 Bodnariu children from their parents, after the principal of the school attended by the older daughters reported that the children were subjected to physical punishment by their parents.



    EXPULSION – The Jordan national Jamal Khalil will be expelled from Romania today, for national security reasons. The High Court of Cassation and Justice yesterday dismissed the defences appeal against a Bucharest Court of Appeals ruling issued last year. Jamal Khalil was declared undesirable in Romania for 15 years, after authorities found solid indications that the individual in question conducted actions likely to threaten national security. According to the Romanian Intelligence Service, Jamal A. Abdel Jabbar Khalil Shalash, who has been in Romania since 1991, was monitored by the Service since 2014. The Intelligence agency said the Jordanian citizen was an unconditional supporter of the IS terrorist group, for which he was conducting online propaganda campaigns, and was willing to get involved in operations targeting Romanias security.



    COUNTER-TERRORISM TASK FORCE – The White House announced on Friday the set-up of a new task force, combining members of several federal agencies, to counter the IS group propaganda both on US territory and abroad. The task force will focus particularly on the internet and social media, which have been extensively used by extremists to disseminate their message. The announcement comes after several White House officials met in Silicon Valley (California) with leaders of internet giants like Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube, to analyse means to prevent the use of social media for IS terrorist purposes.



    S. KOREAN PROPAGANDA – North Korea responded to the South-Korean propaganda broadcasts, which was resumed on Friday, Reuters reports. Seoul resumed broadcasting propaganda via loudspeakers on its North Korean border, in response to Pyongyangs latest nuclear test. Loudspeakers placed on the heavily militarised buffer zone between the two countries broadcast pop music, weather reports, information or criticism of the North Korean regime. The resumption of this psychological warfare method, which in August triggered threats of military retaliation from North Korea, comes as the international community is trying to identify an effective response to Pyongyangs announcement on Wednesday that it had successfully conducted an H-bomb test.



    SPORTS – The Romanian player Monica Niculescu Saturday won the first title for Romanian tennis in 2016. Jointly with the American Vania King, she won the doubles final of the tournament in Shenzhen (China), which has 430,000 US dollars in prize money. In the final, Niculescu/King won 6-1, 6-4, the match against the Chinese Yi-Fan Xu / Saisai Zheng, seeded no. 1. Monica Niculescu also won the doubles tournament in Shenzhen, in 2014, together with Klara Koukalova (the Czech Republic).

Pjönjang hatte angesichts der Ausweitung von UN-Sanktionen und südkoreanisch-amerikanischer Militärmanöver den Waffenstillstandsvertrag von 1953 aufgekündigt, den USA einen atomaren Präventivschlag angedroht und den “Kriegszustand” mit Südkorea ausgerufen. Tickt eine Zeitbombe in Nordkorea?



    Seit seinem ersten Atomtest im Jahr 2006 ist Nordkorea imstande, Nuklearkraft zu zu militärischen Zwecken einzusetzen. 2007 hatte Nordkorea eingewilligt, seinen Atomreaktor in Yongbyon einzustellen, wenn die internationale Gemeinschaft wirtschaftliche Hilfe und Sicherheitsgarantien bietet. Vor einigen Tagen hat aber Nordkorea die Wiederinbetriebnahme seines Atomreaktors in Yongbyon angekündigt. Damit könnte Nordkorea seine Bestände an Plutonium zum Atomwaffenbau weiter vergrö‎ßern. Ein militärischer Konflikt würde zu einem umfassenden und gnadenlosen Vergeltungskrieg Nordkoreas führen, hie‎ß es in einer Erklärung, für die das nordkoreanische Fernsehen am Dienstag sein Programm unterbrach. Seit Jahrzehnten hatte es immer wieder Spannungen auf der koreanischen Halbinsel gegeben, die aber keine gravierende Folgen hatten. Ist die jetzige Lage etwa gefährlicher — wo liegt der Unterschied? Wie reagiert die EU auf die Krise?
