    Only one Romanian player is still in the competition at the Miami WTA 1000 women’s tennis tournament. Qualified straight into the second round, seed no. 19 Sorana Cîrstea is set to play against Sloane Stephens (US). The Romanian athletes who played in the first round were outperformed as early as on Tuesday. Simona Halep was defeated by Paula Badosa (Spain), 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, Ana Bogdan lost 2-6, 4-6 to Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic), and Jaqueline Cristian was outperformed by France’s Diane Parry, 7-6, 6-2.

     

    At the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, Julia Sauter, representing Romania, failed to qualify for the free programme stage, after she came out 27th in the short programme with 52.52 points. Only the top 24 scorers moved up into the next stage. The highest score, 76.98 points, was won by Loena Hendrickx (Belgium), followed by Isabeau Levito (US) and by Haein Lee (South Korea).

     

    On Friday, Romania’s national football team play against Northern Ireland at the National Arena in Bucharest, in the first friendly this spring. The match is part of Romania’s training programme for the European Championships hosted by Germany this summer.

     

    Ahead of the game, manager Edward Iordănescu said he was rather concerned with the players who do not get to play a lot in their club teams abroad. Several Romanian players have been recently transferred to top-level European clubs, such as Radu Drăgușin to Tottenham, and the goalie Horațiu Moldovan to Atletico Madrid, but they are far from proving their worth in the new teams.

     

    Iordănescu emphasised that he relied on continuity and consistency, and explained he could not make dramatic changes in line-up just one step before the final tournament. After the match against Northern Ireland, Romania’s team will travel to Spain to play another friendly in Madrid on Tuesday against Columbia. Prior to the EURO, Romania will also play 2 friendly matches in Bucharest, on 4 June against Bulgaria, and on the 8 June against Liechtenstein. (AMP)

    LAW Romania’s Constitutional Court is today tackling a notification from the Higher Court of Cassation and Justice regarding the so-called law of the fugitives, which says that offenders who are to serve prison sentences and do not present themselves to a police station in seven days will be considered fugitives and get an additional sentence between six months and three years. According to the Higher Court, this law infringes upon the citizens’ right to a fair trial and to individual freedom. The list of famous fugitives includes the former mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, the former head of Romania’s Department for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism, Alina Bica, Mario Iorgulescu, the son of the president of the Professional Football League, Gino Iorgulescu or Paul Philippe of Romania, a grandson of king Carol ll. The former mayor of Baia Mare, Catalin Chereches, who had fled to Germany after having been sentenced to five years in prison for bribery was brought to Romania on Tuesday and sent to the maximum security prison in Arad, western Romania.

     

     

    ELECTIONS Physician Catalin Cîrstoiu, manager of the University hospital in Bucharest, has today been presented in a news conference as the joint candidate for the Bucharest mayor seat by the ruling PSD-PNL coalition. Cîrstoiu will not join either party, and get support as an independent candidate during the local election of June 9th. In the following days, the Social-Democrats and Liberals are expected to announce their joint candidates for the mayor seats of the Bucharest’s six districts. We recall that 2024 is an election year in Romania, which will see election rounds for the European Parliament and local administration in June, for the presidential seat in September and the local Parliament in December.

     

     

    STRIKE Employees of Romania’s National Post Office have gone on a warning strike in an attempt to get pay rises. Protesters have called for an 80 euro rise and an increase in the loyalty bonus between 5 and 10 %. The National Trade Union Block, BNS, says that unless negotiations on the collective labour contract improve, an all-out strike is to follow shortly. Trade union leaders have underlined that almost half of Romania’s population is expected to bear the brunt of an all-out strike as the National Post Office will not be able to deliver pensions to the five million pensioners Romania presently has, as well as the social benefits to people in difficult situations. According to the Trade Union Block, two thirds of the employees of the national post company have the lowest salaries in Romania’s economy.

     

    TENNIS Three Romanian tennis players, Simona Halep, Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian have conceded defeat in the first day of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, Florida, a competition with over 8.7 million dollars in prize money. Cristian was outperformed by Diane Parry of France, 6-7, 2-6, while Ana Bogdan lost to the Czech Katerina Siniakova, 6-2, 6-4. After a long absence from competitions, Simona Halep took on Paula Badosa of Spain, who eventually won the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Halep needed medical attention after the second set. The organisers have offered a wild card to Halep, who is no longer part of the WTA ranking. A former number one player, Halep had not played an official game since August 29, 2022 when she tested positive for a banned substance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne had admitted Halep’s appeal and reduced her initial four year suspension to nine months.

     

     

    WEATHER Temperatures are on the rise as compared to the previous day in most of Romania’s regions being within the normal range for this time of the year. The sky is overcast in the country’s north, center and east as well as in the mountains. Showers and mixed precipitations have been reported on small areas in the east, center, south and north-east. The highs of the day are ranging between 6 and 14 degrees centigrade with a noon reading in Bucharest of 8 degrees Celsius.

    Elections – The Romanian government adopted on Monday, in an extraordinary meeting, a decision that establishes the calendar of the combined elections of June 9, 2024. According to the emergency ordinance on holding the two elections simultaneously, recently adopted by the executive, the local officials will be able to run on behalf of another political party if they announce that 45 days before the date of the elections. The document is criticized by the opposition. The United Right Alliance requested the Ombudsman to notify the Constitutional Court in relation to the emergency ordinance on merging the European Parliament elections with the local ones. The representatives of the Alliance state that they have identified provisions in the law adopted on Friday that violate both the Constitution and some previous decisions of the Court.

     

    Protests – The employees of the Romanian healthcare system protested, on Monday, in front of the headquarters of the Government, the Labor Ministry, the Health Ministry and the Parliament, the main dissatisfaction being related to salary incomes. Several thousand trade unionists, members of the Sanitary Solidarity Federation, participated. People continue to be dissatisfied, although the Government approved, last week, an increase in the healthcare staff’s salaries by 20% in two equal installments, in March and June. The trade union representatives believe that the increase is insufficient and state that the extra amounts do not cover the inflation rate. Moreover, they claim that the government’s emergency ordinance does not include any provision regarding increases or the hourly rate of on-call services.

     

    Tennis – After a year and a half break, the Romanian tennis player Simona Halep will return to the tennis courts, the former world leader leaving, this morning, for Miami. The athlete has not played an official match since August 2022 and will now make her debut at the WTA 1000 tournament in the USA (March 17-31). Outside the WTA ranking, Halep received a wildcard from the organizers, an invitation that allows her to be on the main draw of the tournament. We remind you that Simona Halep received the right to return to the tennis court after the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne has recently reduced her suspension for doping from 4 years to 9 months. The athlete managed to prove that the doping substance she unintentionally ingested came from a contaminated food supplement.

     

    Partnership – The Romanian Foreign Minister, Luminiţa Odobescu, on Monday had a telephone conversation with her Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa, in the context of the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and Japan. The economic, sectoral and cultural projects were reviewed and their development opportunities were highlighted. Starting from the interdependence of security situations, the two ministers addressed the latest developments regarding Europe and the Indo-Pacific area. Both sides highlighted Romania’s and Japan’s firm support for Ukraine and each country’s contribution to the effort to mitigate the multiple negative effects of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, including on its neighbors.

     

    Moldova – The Constitutional Court in Chişinău decided on Monday that the phrase “Romanian language” should remain in all the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, including the Constitution, the magistrates rejecting a notification submitted by socialist and communist deputies, Radio Chişinău reports. At the end of March last year, the deputies of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) submitted a notification to the Constitutional Court requesting the verification of the constitutionality of the decision to change the name of the state language, from Moldovan to Romanian, in all the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, including in the Constitution. The main argument of the authors of the complaint was that the parliamentary group of the ruling Action and Solidarity party changed the Constitution with the votes of a simple majority of deputies, and not with two-thirds of the votes. The respective bill was voted by the Moldovan Parliament in the final reading last year, and the president Maia Sandu promulgated the law.

     

    NATO – Romania firmly supports the Open Door Policy of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance, and “Sweden’s accession proves that NATO’s door remains open and that together we are stronger”, said the Romanian Defense Minister, Angel Tîlvăr. On Monday, the ceremony of raising the flags of Sweden, Romania and NATO took place at the Romanian Defense Ministry headquarters, on the occasion of Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, in the presence of the minister and the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Romania, Therese Hyden. According to a press release, during the ceremony, Angel Tîlvăr declared that Sweden, as a NATO member, will equally contribute both to the development of the Alliance policies and decisions and to the consolidation of allied forces. In turn, Therese Hyden stated that with Sweden’s joining NATO, the North Atlantic Alliance will be stronger and Sweden will be safer.

     

    EC – Romania received, on Monday, 642 million Euros from the European Commission for the Just Transition Platform – FTJ STEP, representing a single exceptional pre-financing within the ‘Strategic Technologies for Europe’ (STEP) platform – the Minister of Investments and European Projects, Adrian Hat announced. The platform will support the development of European industry and the stimulation of investments in critical technologies in Europe. According to the minister, at present, Romania has received sums worth 1.23 billion Euros within the Cohesion Policy 2021 – 2027, and by the end of this year, it will have in its accounts at least 5 billion Euros from the new Cohesion Policy.     Today’s sports programme begins
    with good news from ice hockey as Romanian side ACSH Gheorgheni has secured a
    first by winning the regional competition Erste League. The Romanians secured a
    4-3 aggregate win against the Hungarian side Ferencvaros Budapesta. ACSH won the
    decisive home game 2-1 on Friday. Hungarian player Peter Vincze put the hosts
    on the lead, then British Oliver Betteridge leveled the scoring for the
    visitors. Finnish player Matias Petteri Haaranen, who has enjoyed Romanian
    citizenship since last summer eventually sealed the points. This has been the
    fifth title won by a Romanian side after Hockey Club Csíkszereda, in 2009, and Sport
    Club Miercurea Ciuc, în 2011, 2021 and 2022. Miercurea Ciuc has lost three
    finals and Corona Braşov two.

    she put in Miami. In the aforementioned WTA 1000 tournament with 8.8 million
    dollars in prize money, Cîrstea made it to the semifinals, where she was
    outperformed by the Czech Petra Kvitova 7-5, 6-4. Cîrstea won the first set 5-2
    then she lost five games in a row. In the second round the difference was made
    by a break, Kvitova won in the first game. The Romanian won a check of more
    than 352 thousand dollars and 390 WTA points, which placed her on the 41st
    position in the women’s professional ranking. Kvitova eventually won the Miami tournament
    finals after a 7-6, 6-2 against Elena Rybakina of Kazahstan.




    Romanian gymnast Gabriela Vănoagă became silver medalist in the beam finals of
    the Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships in Antalya, Turkey. Hanyue
    Yu of China won gold and Cristella Brunetti-Burns of Canada got bronze. This
    has been the only medals athletes from Romania won in Antalya.






    In the Romanian Football
    Superleague Farul Constanţa tops the table two points ahead of runner up CFR
    Cluj. In the second leg on Saturday, Farul ended in a one-all draw their match
    against Rapid Bucharest. With the same score ended the game which on Sunday pitched
    Universitatea against CFR Cluj.




    On Friday Petrolul Ploieşti clinched
    a 1-0 away win against FC U Craiova while on Saturday, UTA obtained a 2-0 home
    win against Universitatea Cluj. In Sibiu, local side Hermannstadt and FC Botoşani
    ended their game one-all. On Sunday, FC Voluntari clinched a 2-0 in their game
    against FC Argeş in Piteşti.

    DEFENCE The strategic partnership between
    the US and Romania has never been stronger, said the US secretary of defence,
    Lloyd Austin, during the talks with his Romanian counterpart Angel Tîlvăr in
    Washington on Thursday. According to a news release from the Pentagon, the US
    official praised the excellent relations between the two countries’ armed
    forces and thanked Romania for hosting thousands of US and Allied troops to
    bolster deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank, and for its role as a leader in the
    Black Sea region. The two officials condemned Russia’s reckless war of choice
    in Ukraine and reiterated their firm support for Ukraine. The Romanian defence
    minister is on a visit to the US for several days, and has meetings scheduled
    with senior US officials in the following days.

    B9 The meeting of foreign
    ministers in the Bucharest 9 format carries on today in Łódź (Poland),
    co-chaired by the head of the Romanian diplomacy Bogdan Aurescu and his Polish counterpart, Zbigniew Rau. On
    Thursday, the Romanian official announced that the first high-level conference
    on security in the Black Sea region will take place in Bucharest on April 13.
    During the talks in Lodz, B9 ministers focused on the consequences of Russia’s
    war of aggression against Ukraine at regional and Euro-Atlantic level, with an
    emphasis on the need to continue supporting Ukraine and to consolidate
    trans-Atlantic ties, the Romanian foreign ministry said. In his address, Mr.
    Aurescu called on B9 ministers to maintain increased Allied attention and
    involvement in the Black Sea region, which has strategic importance for the
    entire Euro-Atlantic space, as well as to strengthen trans-Atlantic
    coordination. Bogdan Aurescu reiterated Romania’s firm commitment to
    further provide multidimensional support to Ukraine. He also encouraged the
    Allies on the eastern flank to continue supporting Ukraine’s neighbours, which
    are vulnerable to Russia’s aggressive moves, especially Georgia and the
    Republic of Moldova, which is facing hybrid threats designed to destabilise the
    country and to undermine its EU accession efforts.


    VISIT The PM of Romania Nicolae Ciucă travels
    to Sweden today, the country that holds the rotating presidency of the EU. His
    agenda includes a meeting with his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson. According
    to Radio Romania’s correspondent, talks will focus on Russia’s aggression
    against Ukraine and its impact on the countries in the region, on the
    enlargement of the Schengen area, on the priorities of the Swedish presidency
    of the EU Council and on bilateral cooperation, which PM Nicolae Ciucă has
    recently described as very good. Nicolae Ciucă will also have a meeting with
    the speaker of the Swedish parliament, Andreas Norlén. Also today, the Romanian
    head of government will attend a public conference on Threats and
    opportunities in the Black Sea region, which will also mark the end of his
    visit to Sweden.


    GREEN ENERGY The European Commission
    vice-president Frans Timmermans travels to Bucharest today, for talks on
    the European Green Deal and the bloc’s strategy to switch to a zero-emission
    economy. The agenda of the visit includes meetings with president Klaus
    Iohannis, with the environment minister Tánczos Barna, and with other
    government officials. Frans Timmermans will also have meetings with civil
    society members, to discuss ways to fight climate change in Romania and the
    role of the European Commission in this respect.


    AGRICULTURE
    The European Commission intends to revise the amount of compensations granted
    to farmers from 5 countries affected by the imports of cheap grains from
    Ukraine. The Commission is to disburse another EUR 75 mln, of which Romania
    might get EUR 15mln, in addition to the EUR 10mln earmarked already. In an open
    letter to the government, Romanian farmers argue however that Romania has lost
    a lot more because of the priority and advantages received by Ukrainian
    producers in the European market.


    TENNIS The Romanian player Sorana Cîrstea
    (74 WTA) today takes on Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic (12 WTA), in the
    semis of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami (Florida). Twice a Wimbledon champion (2011,
    2014), Kvitova qualified into the semifinals on Thursday, when she defeated
    Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in 3 sets. On Wednesday Sorana Cîrstea had outplayed Arina Sabalenka of
    Belarus, no 2 in the world. This will be the 11th direct
    match between Sorana Cîrstea and Petra Kvitova, with
    the Czech athlete winning 6 of them so far. The winner will take on Elena Rybakina

    La tenista rumana Sorana Cîrstea se clasificó, este miércoles, a las semifinales del torneo WTA 1.000 de Miami (Florida), dotado con premios totales de 8,8 millones de dólares, al doblegar 6-4, 6-4 a la bielorrusa Arina Sabalenka, la número dos del mundo.


    Sorana Cîrstea (32 años, 74 WTA) logró una espectacular victoria, la más importante de su carrera, tras una hora y 25 minutos.


    Para la rumana es la segunda semifinal a la que llega en un torneo WTA 1.000, después de que hace diez años (2013) llegara a la final del torneo de Toronto.


    Había derrotado este mes a Caroline García, (la no.4 mundial) en Indian Wells. Le repitió la dosis a la francesa en la segunda ronda de Miami.


    Cuartofinalista en Indian Wells, Cîrstea se impuso a la campeona del Abierto de Australia en dos sets, que controló la mayor parte del tiempo. La rumana comenzó con un quiebre, pero estaba empatado, 4-4, para volver a ganar inmediatamente contra el saque, y luego imponerse 6-4 en el primer set. Cîrstea comenzó con un quiebre y el segundo set, tenía 2-0, pero luego perdió tres sets consecutivos. Con el 3-3, Sorana logró un nuevo quiebre y aprovechó esta ventaja para ganar el set por 6-4. Cîrstea cometió dos dobles faltas y Sabalenka 6.


    Este fue el primer duelo entre las dos, con Sabalenka saliendo de la parte posterior de 20 victorias en 22 partidos en 2023. En el Abierto de Miami, Cîrstea no ha perdido un set hasta ahora, noqueando a Fernanda Contreras Gómez (México), Caroline García ( Francia, número cuatro del mundo), Karolina Muchova (República Checa), Marketa Vondrousova (República Checa) y Arina Sabalenka (Bielorrusia, número dos del mundo).


    Cîrstea se aseguró un cheque de 352.635 dólares y 390 puntos WTA, y en el penúltimo acto se enfrentará a la ganadora entre la checa Petra Kvitova y la rusa Ekaterina Alexandrova.



    La pareja rumana-ucraniana Irina Begu/Anhelina Kalinina fue derrotada por la pareja Bernarda Pera (EE.UU.)/Magda Linette (Polonia), 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), el martes, en los cuartos de final del evento de dobles del torneo WTA 1.000 de Miami, dotado con premios totales de 8,8 millones de dólares.


    La jugadora canadiense de origen rumano Bianca Andreescu abandonó frente a la rusa Ekaterina Alexandrova, 2-0 a su favor en el segundo set, tras perder el primer set (6-7). Andreescu se quejó de dolor en el tobillo izquierdo y abandonó el campo en silla de ruedas.


    La rumana Jaqueline Cristian se impuso este domingo en el torneo ITF de Palmanova (España), dotado con un premio total de 25.000 dólares, tras superar en la final a la bielorrusa Irina Šimanovici por 6-4, 6-0. Jaqueline Cristian (24 años, 204 WTA).



    El equipo de balonmano femenino Rapid Bucarest logró una actuación de alto nivel el domingo pasado. El vigente campeón de Rumanía avanzó a los cuartos de final de la Liga de Campeones por primera vez desde que se disputa la competición más importante de clubes europeos de balonmano en el formato actual.


    El Rapid también había ganado la Copa de Campeones de Europa en 1964, la Copa IHF en 1993 y la Copa de Ciudades en 2000. Ahora, ha entrado en los 8 mejores equipos de la competición tras derrotar al equipo esloveno Krim Ljubljana en el partido de vuelta por 30 a 24. Las chicas del Rapid debían recuperar una diferencia de cinco goles, tras haber ganado el Krim, una semana antes, en Eslovenia, 29 a 24. Estavana Polman fue la mejor anotadora del Rapid, con 8 goles. Según los especialistas, quien realmente marcó la diferencia fue Sorina Grozav. La joven jugadora fue destacada por la web oficial de la Federación Europea de Balonmano, eurohandball.com, por los cuatro goles marcados al final del partido, de un total de seis anotados por la rumana, lo que inclinó decisivamente la balanza a favor del Rapid.


    Cabe señalar que Sorina Grozav nació en Râmnicu Vâlcea, el 27 de mayo de 1999, en una familia de deportistas. Su madre, Mariana Tîrcă, es una leyenda del balonmano rumano. Jugó 335 veces con la camiseta de la selección rumana, para la que marcó 2043 goles, récord mundial de éxitos para una selección.



    El CS Dinamo Bucarest abandonó la Liga de Campeones de balonmano masculino, aunque derrotó al fuerte equipo alemán THW Kiel, con marcador de 32-31 (17-16), el miércoles por la noche, en cancha propia, en el partido de vuelta del play-off de la competencia.


    El campeón rumano perdió el partido de vuelta con una diferencia decisiva de 13 goles (28-41).Los locales empezaron bien el partido y ganaban 4-1 y 6-3 (min. 7), pero el Dinamo anotó cuatro goles seguidos y tomó el control. El equipo dirigido por Xavi Pascual se adelantó en varias ocasiones por dos goles, pero en el descanso su ventaja fue mínima, 17-16.


    El THW Kiel se adelantó en la segunda mitad, 21-19 (40), 24-22 (43), pero el Dinamo remontó y logró imponerse, 32-31. En los cuartos de final, el THW Kiel se enfrentará al Paris Saint-Germain Handball.


    El SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea se perdió la clasificación a las semifinales de balonmano femenino de la EHF Europa League, luego de ser derrotado por el equipo danés Nykobing Falster Handbold, con marcador de 38-29 (17-14), el domingo pasado, en Naestved, en el partido de vuelta de los cuartos de final.



    La selección de fútbol de Rumanía comenzó bien la campaña de clasificación para la Eurocopa de 2024. En el Grupo I, los tricolores ganaron, el sábado, en Andorra, 2 a 0, luego el martes, en Bucarest, pasaron a Bielorrusia, 2 a 1.


    Ambos enfrentamientos estuvieron claramente dominados por los alumnos del entrenador Edward Iordănescu, pero el bajo valor de los equipos rivales también importó mucho. Andorra ocupa el puesto 153 de la clasificación mundial publicada por FIFA, y Bielorrusia el puesto 97, mientras que Rumanía se ubica en el 52. Ahora, los chicos de Iordănescu ocupan el segundo lugar del Grupo I, con 6 puntos, empatados con el primer puesto, Suiza, pero con menor diferencia de goles.     El ciclista rumano Vlad Dascălu (Trek Factory) ocupó el quinto lugar en la Copa de Francia de Mountain Bike, en la prueba olímpica (XCO), celebrada el domingo en Marsella.


    El 19 de marzo, Vlad Dascălu (Trek Factory Racing XC) fue segundo en el concurso de mountain bike Superprestigio MTB Sisnet, celebrado en Ancin (España), y el 18 de febrero ganó el concurso Internacionales XCO Chelva Gsport Challenge 2023.

    La tenista rumana Sorana Cîrstea se clasificó, este miércoles, a las semifinales del torneo WTA 1.000 de Miami (Florida), dotado con premios totales de 8,8 millones de dólares, al doblegar 6-4, 6-4 a la bielorrusa Arina Sabalenka, la número dos del mundo.


    Sorana Cîrstea (32 años, 74 WTA) logró una espectacular victoria, la más importante de su carrera, tras una hora y 25 minutos.


    Para la rumana es la segunda semifinal a la que llega en un torneo WTA 1.000, después de que hace diez años (2013) llegara a la final del torneo de Toronto.


    Había derrotado este mes a Caroline García, (la no.4 mundial) en Indian Wells. Le repitió la dosis a la francesa en la segunda ronda de Miami.


    Cuartofinalista en Indian Wells, Cîrstea se impuso a la campeona del Abierto de Australia en dos sets, que controló la mayor parte del tiempo. La rumana comenzó con un quiebre, pero estaba empatado, 4-4, para volver a ganar inmediatamente contra el saque, y luego imponerse 6-4 en el primer set. Cîrstea comenzó con un quiebre y el segundo set, tenía 2-0, pero luego perdió tres sets consecutivos. Con el 3-3, Sorana logró un nuevo quiebre y aprovechó esta ventaja para ganar el set por 6-4.     La jugadora canadiense de origen rumano Bianca Andreescu abandonó frente a la rusa Ekaterina Alexandrova, 2-0 a su favor en el segundo set, tras perder el primer set (6-7). Andreescu se quejó de dolor en el tobillo izquierdo y abandonó el campo en silla de ruedas.


    La rumana Jaqueline Cristian se impuso este domingo en el torneo ITF de Palmanova (España), dotado con un premio total de 25.000 dólares, tras superar en la final a la bielorrusa Irina Šimanovici por 6-4, 6-0. Jaqueline Cristian (24 años, 204 WTA).



    El equipo de balonmano femenino Rapid Bucarest logró una actuación de alto nivel el domingo pasado. El vigente campeón de Rumanía avanzó a los cuartos de final de la Liga de Campeones por primera vez desde que se disputa la competición más importante de clubes europeos de balonmano en el formato actual.


    El Rapid también había ganado la Copa de Campeones de Europa en 1964, la Copa IHF en 1993 y la Copa de Ciudades en 2000. Ahora, ha entrado en los 8 mejores equipos de la competición tras derrotar al equipo esloveno Krim Ljubljana en el partido de vuelta por 30 a 24. Las chicas del Rapid debían recuperar una diferencia de cinco goles, tras haber ganado el Krim, una semana antes, en Eslovenia, 29 a 24. Estavana Polman fue la mejor anotadora del Rapid, con 8 goles. Según los especialistas, quien realmente marcó la diferencia fue Sorina Grozav. La joven jugadora fue destacada por la web oficial de la Federación Europea de Balonmano, eurohandball.com, por los cuatro goles marcados al final del partido, de un total de seis anotados por la rumana, lo que inclinó decisivamente la balanza a favor del Rapid.


    Cabe señalar que Sorina Grozav nació en Râmnicu Vâlcea, el 27 de mayo de 1999, en una familia de deportistas. Su madre, Mariana Tîrcă, es una leyenda del balonmano rumano. Jugó 335 veces con la camiseta de la selección rumana, para la que marcó 2043 goles, récord mundial de éxitos para una selección.



    El CS Dinamo Bucarest abandonó la Liga de Campeones de balonmano masculino, aunque derrotó al fuerte equipo alemán THW Kiel, con marcador de 32-31 (17-16), el miércoles por la noche, en cancha propia, en el partido de vuelta del play-off de la competencia.


    El campeón rumano perdió el partido de vuelta con una diferencia decisiva de 13 goles (28-41).Los locales empezaron bien el partido y ganaban 4-1 y 6-3 (min. 7), pero el Dinamo anotó cuatro goles seguidos y tomó el control. El equipo dirigido por Xavi Pascual se adelantó en varias ocasiones por dos goles, pero en el descanso su ventaja fue mínima, 17-16.


    El THW Kiel se adelantó en la segunda mitad, 21-19 (40), 24-22 (43), pero el Dinamo remontó y logró imponerse, 32-31. En los cuartos de final, el THW Kiel se enfrentará al Paris Saint-Germain Handball.

For CSM Lugoj, this was the best season in history, the Challenge Cup final adding to their winning the Romanian Cup Winners Cup.

    Übungsleiter Edward Iordănescu hat seine Amtszeit als Trainer der rumänischen Fußballnationalmannschaft mit einer Niederlage begonnen. Am Freitag unterlagen die Tricolorii in Bukarest in einem Freundschaftsspiel gegen Griechenland mit 0:1. Das einzige Tor des Spiels erzielte Andreas Bouchalakis in der 39. Minute. Rumäniens Debütanten waren Octavian Popescu vom FCSB Bukarest und Radu Drăgușin, Vertragsspieler von Juventus Turin, der an Salernitana ausgeliehen wurde.


    Die Vorbereitung auf die Nations League wird am Dienstag mit einem Freundschaftsspiel gegen Israel in Netanya fortgesetzt. Zwei Schlüsselspieler der rumänischen Mannschaft, Alexandru Maxim und Mario Camora, werden das Spiel verpassen, wie der rumänische Fußballverband am Sonntag mitteilte. Maxim ist durch eine Atemwegserkrankung stark beeinträchtigt und Camora leidet unter Muskelproblemen. Die beiden gesellen sich zu vier weiteren Spielern, die aus dem Kader gestrichen werden mussten. Das sind Răzvan Marin, Alexandru Mitriță, Deian Sorescu und Florin Tănase, die sich gerade in Isolation befinden, nachdem sie am Tag nach dem Griechenland-Spiel positiv auf Covid-19 getestet worden waren.



    Rumänien hat beim mit 8,3 Mio US-Dollar dotierten WTA-Tennisturnier in Miami keine Vertreterinnen mehr im Rennen. Die letzte Rumänin im Wettbewerb, Irina Begu, unterlag am Samstag in der dritten Runde der Weißrussin Aleksandra Sasnovici nach drei Stunden Spielzeit mit 5:7, 7:6, 4:6. In der zweiten Runde hatte Begu noch die topgesetzte Arina Sabalenka, ebenfalls aus Weißrussland, bezwingen können. Das Turnier in Miami gehört zur Kategorie WTA-1000 und somit zu den stärksten auf der WTA-Tour.



    Weiter geht es mit dem Frauenhandball. Minaur Baia Mare hat einen großen Schritt in Richtung Europa-League-Halbfinale gemacht. Am Samstag besiegte das Team aus Maramureș im Hinspiel des Viertelfinales zu Hause die norwegische Mannschaft Sola mit 40:32. Das Rückspiel wird am Sonntag in Stavanger ausgetragen. Im vergangenen Jahr war Minaur Gastgeber des Turniers, bei dem sowohl das Halbfinale als auch das Finale ausgetragen wurden, das Team belegte dabei den dritten Platz. In einem weiteren Viertelfinal-Hinspiel am Sonntag unterlag der SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea zu Hause dem dänischen Team Herning – Ikaast mit 33:39. Das Rückspiel findet am Samstag in Dänemark statt.



    Rumäniens nationaler Rallye-Meister, Simone Tempestini, wurde am Sonntag bei der Rallye der Azoren, dem zweiten Rennen der Rallye-Europameisterschaft, vierter. Laut Angaben des rumänischen Motorsportverbands habe Tempestini das beste Ergebnis Rumäniens in der modernen Ära der Rallye-Europameisterschaft“ erzielt.

    Pandémie – Le gouvernement roumain devrait imposer aujourd’hui de nouvelles
    restrictions pour essayer de ralentir la propagation du coronavirus. Le Comité
    national pour les situations d’urgence se réunira dans la journée pour proposer
    de nouvelles règles au niveau national et le Comité de la ville de Bucarest
    pour les situations d’urgence sera également convoqué, car le nombre de
    contaminations ne cesse d’augmenter dans la capitale. Les chiffres officiels de
    ce jeudi 25 mars font état de 6.600 nouveaux cas de contamination au Sars-Cov-2
    en Roumanie, sur environ 42.000 tests de dépistage effectués. La capitale et le
    département d’Ilfov, qui l’entoure, continuent d’afficher le taux d’incidence
    le plus élevé du pays. 1.348 malades graves sont en réanimation et 140
    personnes sont décédées des suites de l’infection.






    Protestations – Des centaines d’agents
    de police ont manifesté jeudi à Bucarest, mécontents que leurs salaires se
    trouvent au même niveau qu’en 2009. Les syndicalistes réclament la mise à jour
    du montant des indemnités de repas, un encadrement unitaire, l’octroi de la
    prime de risques et de celle pour le surmenage neuropsychique, ainsi que des
    tickets-vacances. Autres plaintes des agents de police concernent la dotation défaillante
    en équipements et moyens techniques d’intervention, ainsi que le manque accru
    de personnel, notamment au niveau des structures opératives.




    EU – Le président Klaus Iohannis participe, aujourd’hui et demain, à la réunion
    par vidéoconférence du Conseil européen. Selon l’Administration présidentielle,
    les dirigeants européens feront le point sur la situation épidémiologique, en
    accentuant la nécessité d’accélérer la production et le déploiement de vaccins.
    Ils évoqueront la préparation pour la levée graduelle des restrictions et
    poursuivront les efforts de coordination déployés pour faire face à la crise
    pandémique. Des aspects concernant le marché unique et la transformation
    numérique seront également discutés. Les leaders européens examineront la situation
    en Méditerranée orientale et les relations avec la Turquie. Le président
    américain Joe Biden participera à la vidéoconférence jeudi soir pour débattre
    des relations UE-États-Unis. En marge de la réunion, un Sommet de l’euro aura
    également lieu, où les dirigeants examineront comment renforcer le rôle
    international de la monnaie européenne.




    Education – Les examens nationaux se tiendront finalement aux dates prévues initialement
    et l’année scolaire prendra fin au plus tard le 25 juin, a annoncé ce matin le
    ministre de l’Education nationale Sorin Cîmpreanu, après des discussions avec
    les syndicats et avec les associations d’élèves et de parents d’élèves. Les
    vacances de printemps seront maintenues aux dates annoncées hier, entre le 2
    avril et le 4 mai, à l’exception des élèves en fin de cycle scolaire. Le
    ministre a renoncé à prolonger l’année scolaire jusqu’au mois de juillet, après
    que ses annoncés d’hier ont été vivement critiquées. Les épreuves de
    l’Evaluation nationale des élèves de troisième auraient lieu donc du 22 au 25
    juin, et le Bac entre le 28 juin et le 1er juillet.

    Tennis – La joueuse roumaine de tennis Simona Halep rencontre aujourd’hui la Française Caroline Garcia au deuxième tour du tournoi WTA de Miami, aux Etats-Unis. Halep a gagné quatre des cinq matchs disputéd contre la sportive française. Mercredi, Mihaela Buzărnescu a été vaincue par Caroline Garcia au premier tour de la compétition, 6-1, 6-2.

    Football – L’équipe de Roumanie de football rencontre ce soir, à domicile, la Macédoine du Nord, dans son premier match des qualifications de la zone Europe pour la Coupe du Monde 2022. Les sportifs roumains auront deux autres rencontres ce mois-ci, le 28 mars, toujours à domicile, contre l’Allemagne, et le 31 mars, à l’extérieur, contre l’Arménie. L’Islande et Liechtenstein font également partie du groupe. Les vainqueurs de chaque groupe seront directement qualifiés pour la Coupe du monde et les seconds iront en phase de barrages. Côté juniors, l’équipe Under-21 de la Roumanie a fait match nul, 1-1, hier soir, à Budapest, contre les Pays-Bas, dans son premier match du groupe A du Championnat européen. Dans le même groupe, l’Allemagne a vaincu la Hongrie 3-0. Les jeunes footballeurs roumains rencontreront la Hongrie samedi et l’Allemagne mardi prochain.




    Météo – Le temps reste froid en Roumanie comparé aux normales de saison.
    Le ciel est variable et les nuages persistent sur le sud-est du pays. On
    signale des précipitations faibles par endroits, mixtes sur le sud-est et l’est
    du territoire et de la neige en montagne. Le vent est faible à modéré, avec des
    intensifications sur les crêtes des Carpates du Sud. Les températures maximales iront de 2 à 11°C dans la journée,
    avec 7° à midi à Bucarest.

    Covid-19 – Le
    président roumain Klaus Iohannis a déclaré aujourd’hui que les autorités ne souhaitaient
    pas décréter un confinement général et il a appelé la population à respecter les
    restrictions et les responsables de la campagne de vaccination à accélérer l’immunisation
    des gens. Le chef de l’Etat a aussi affirmé que le confinement de Bucarest n’était
    pas non plus une solution à envisager, mais que des restrictions
    supplémentaires, telles des restrictions de circulation le weekend et des
    horaires d’ouverture réduits pour les centres commerciaux, étaient nécessaires.
    La Direction de santé publique Bucarest devrait décider aujourd’hui si de
    nouvelles mesures barrières allaient s’appliquer dans la capitale de la
    Roumanie. Il s’agirait, entre autres, de suspendre les cours en présentiel dans
    les écoles et les collèges, de limiter l’accès des clients dans les magasins, d’introduire
    des horaires de travail flexibles dans les entreprises, d’interdire les
    événements et les activités privées pour les enfants dans les espaces clos et
    de fermer les aires de jeu aménagées dans les parcs. Les autorités ont fait
    savoir qu’elles n’envisageaient pas pour l’instant de confiner Bucarest, malgré
    un taux d’incidence de plus de six infections pour mille habitants. Sur l’ensemble
    de la Roumanie, 6.136 nouveaux cas de Covid-19 ont été recensés mardi sur plus
    de 40.00 tests de dépistage effectués à l’échelle nationale. 174 personnes sont
    décédées, portant le bilan tragique de cette maladie à près de 22.600 morts. Depuis
    le début de la pandémie, il y a un an, la Roumanie a enregistré plus de 900.000
    infections au SARS-CoV-2. Quelque 1.400 malades graves sont actuellement
    hospitalisés en soins intensifs. La capitale a rapporté le plus grand nombre de
    nouvelles infections par le SARS-CoV-2. Les départements d’Ilfov (qui entoure
    Bucarest) et de Timiş (ouest) affichent également un taux de contamination
    supérieur à six pour mille habitants. Huit autres départements du pays annoncent
    un taux de plus de trois pour mille habitants sur les 14 derniers jours.








    Vaccins – Plus de 1.800.000 de
    personnes ont déjà été immunisées contre la Covid-19 en Roumanie, soit plus de
    9% de la population, a informé le Comité national de coordination de la
    campagne de vaccination. Le président du Comité national de coordination des
    activités concernant la vaccination anti-Covid, Valeriu Gheorghiţă, a déclaré
    mardi qu’à partir du 1-er avril prochain, la plateforme informatique de
    programmation afficherait aussi le type de vaccin administré dans chaque centre
    et que les médecins de famille pourraient eux aussi vacciner leurs patients. M.
    Gheorghiţă a également informé que le nombre des personnes immunisées passerait
    de 60 à 90 par jour et par centre. Plus de 775.000 personnes figurent
    actuellement sur les listes d’attente pour la vaccination. Par ailleurs, à
    Timişoara, vient d’ouvrir le premier centre de vaccination contre la Covid-19 non-stop
    de Roumanie.




    Vacances scolaires – Les vacances de printemps des
    élèves roumains sont prévues, cette année, du 2 avril au 4 mai, afin de couvrir
    les fêtes de Pâques catholique et orthodoxe et de réduire la mobilité des
    personnes durant le mois d’avril, quand les autorités s’attendent à
    recrudescence des cas de Covid-19. C’est le ministre de l’éducation nationale,
    Sorin Cîmpeanu, qui a précisé, dans le contexte, que les épreuves de l’Evaluation
    nationale des élèves de troisième auraient lieu du 5 au 8 juillet, tandis que
    le Bac est maintenu entre le 28 juin et le 1-er juillet. Et le ministre de
    préciser que les établissements scolaires continueraient à fonctionner en
    présentiel dans les localités ayant un taux de contamination de plus de 6, le
    tout-en-ligne allant être décidé uniquement là où le confinement est imposé.


    Loi – Les députés
    roumains ont adopté aujourd’hui le projet de loi qui supprime la Section d’investigation
    des infractions de justice, avec les amendements approuvés, la semaine
    dernière, par la Commission juridique de la Chambre basse. Parmi ces
    amendements, il y en a un, proposé par le groupe parlementaire des minorités
    nationales, selon lequel les magistrats peuvent être envoyés devant un tribunal
    uniquement avec l’avis du Conseil supérieur de la magistrature. Dans la
    coalition au pouvoir, le Parti national libéral et L’USR-PLUS affirment avoir accepté cette issue
    afin de débloquer l’adoption du projet législatif, après la demande de
    garanties supplémentaires pour l’immunité des juges et des procureurs, demande
    formulée par l’UDMR. Le patron des libéraux roumains, Ludovic Orban, a insisté
    sur le fait que la suppression de la SIIJ était une recommandation de la
    Commission européenne, que la Roumanie devait respecter dans la perspective de
    la levée du Mécanisme de coopération et de vérification (MCV). Le chef de l’opposition
    sociale-démocrate, Marcel Ciolacu, a déclaré que son parti allait saisir la
    Cour constitutionnelle, si le parlement adoptait le projet de loi, sachant que
    le Sénat est l’assemblée décisionnelle dans ce cas précis.














    Coopération militaire – Le
    chef de l’Etat-Major de la défense de Roumanie, le général Daniel Petrescu, a
    aujourd’hui, à Bucarest, des pourparlers avec son homologue espagnol, l’amiral
    Teodoro Esteban Lopez, qui a commencé hier une visite de 4 jours en Roumanie.

    Les deux hommes procéderont à une évaluation de
    la coopération militaire bilatérale et de son potentiel de développement, dans
    le contexte du partenariat stratégique entre la Roumanie et l’Espagne. Ils
    aborderont également la participation à des exercices communs, à la
    consolidation des structures de commandement multinationales alliées et les missions otaniennes
    ou de l’Union européenne sur les théâtres d’opérations.


    Bélarus – La Roumanie,
    aux côtés de 18 autres Etats de l’OSCE et de l’Union européenne, soutient la
    création de la plateforme internationale de responsabilité pour le Bélarus, a
    informé le ministère des affaires étrangères de Bucarest. Il s’agit d’une
    structure censée appuyer l’enquête et la documentation des violations graves
    des droits de l’homme au
    Bélarus suite à l’élection présidentielle d’août 2020. La Roumanie
    soutient un agenda concret pour un Bélarus démocratique, sur la base du
    dialogue politique, sur lequel repose la transition vers un système de valeurs
    démocratiques, d’Etat de droit et de respect des droits et des libertés
    fondamentales de l’être humain. En septembre 2020, à travers l’European
    Endowment for Democracy, la Roumanie a accordé 100.000 euros d’aide aux médias
    indépendants et à la société civile du Bélarus. Au début de cette année,
    le MAE et le ministère de l’éducation nationale de Bucarest ont lancé un
    programme de bourses pour une centaine d’étudiants bélarusses pour l’année
    universitaire 2021-2022.


    Jeux Olympiques
    – L’épéiste Ana-Maria Popescu est le soixantième sportif roumain qualifié aux
    Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo, grâce à la première place qu’elle occupe dans la
    hiérarchie mondiale de son épreuve. Ana-Maria Popescu participera ainsi à la
    cinquième édition des JO de sa carrière, après celles d’Athènes 2004, de Pékin
    2008 où elle a remporté l’argent dans le concours individuel, de Londres 2012
    et de Rio 2016, lorsqu’elle a eu l’or dans le concours par équipe. A Tokyo, la
    Roumanie sera présente dans 13 disciplines: natation, athlétisme, aviron,
    football, gymnastique artistique, basket 3×3, cyclisme, lutte, tir sportif, canoë-Kayak,
    tennis de table, escrime et boxe.




    Football – La sélection de football
    jeunesse de Roumanie débutera aujourd’hui à Budapest à l’édition du Championnat
    d’Europe de football Under-21. Les joueurs tricolores affronteront la sélection
    des Pays-Bas, une des favorites de la compétition. Ils font partie d’un groupe très
    difficile, où l’on retrouve aussi l’Allemagne, vice-championne européenne, et
    la Hongrie. La Roumanie, qui est à sa troisième participation, et deuxième
    consécutive, à un championnat continental des moins de 21 ans, organisera, avec
    la Géorgie, l’édition 2023 du Championnat.




    Tennis – Quatre joueuses
    roumaines de tennis -Simona Halep, Sorana Cîrstea, Irina Begu et Mihaela
    Buzarnescu- figurent au tableau principal de simple du tournoi WTA de Miami,
    qui a commencé hier. Irina Begu (74 WTA), affronte, aujourd’hui au premier
    tour, la Russe Anna Kalinskaya. Hier, Mihaela Buzărnescu a réussi une victoire
    en 3 sets devant l’Allemande Anna-Lena, dans la dernière manche des
    qualifications. La prochaine adversaire de Mihaela Buzărnescu sera la Française Carolina Garcia (51
    WTA). Sorana Cîrstea (66 WTA) jouera au deuxième tour contre l’Estonienne
    Anett Kontaveit (24 WTA).

    Gouvernement – Le gouvernement de Bucarest s’est réuni ce vendredi matin pour approuver la modification de plusieurs décrets d’urgence, dont le controversé décret n° 114 qui propose des mesures fiscales vivement critiquées par le milieu des affaires. Aux dires de l’Exécutif, les mesures envisagées tiennent compte de l’avis des acteurs concernés, que la coalition au pouvoir a consultés ces derniers mois et elles sont en accord aussi avec la réalité sur le marché. Le cabinet doit approuver également le budget de l’Administration du Fonds pour l’Environnement, ce qui permettra de continuer plusieurs programmes gouvernementaux tels « Le Tacot », le programme qui offre un remboursement pour une auto ancienne de plus de 8 ans et qui servira à l’achat d’une voiture nouvelle, moins polluante, électrique ou hybride. Par ailleurs, un programme destiné l’installation d’équipements photovoltaïques sera bientôt lancé ; il permettra aux Roumains de produire leur propre électricité et chauffage ou de devenir de petits producteurs d’énergie renouvelable.

    Coopération – Une nouvelle réunion en format quadrilatéral Roumanie – Bulgarie – Grèce – Serbie est prévue cet après – midi au Palais de Snagov, près de Bucarest. Ce sera l’occasion pour les premiers ministres des pays mentionnés de discuter des progrès enregistrés dans le cadre de projets communs dans le domaine du transport, de l’infrastructure et de l’énergie. Avant cette rencontre, Bucarest accueillera la 5e réunion du Conseil de coopération de haut niveau entre la Roumanie et la Bulgarie. Au centre de l’attention: le partenariat visant le renforcement de la sécurité, du développement économique et la connectivité de la région. Des documents bilatéraux seront signés à l’issue de la séance commune.

    Justice – L’ancienne cheffe du parquet anticorruption de Roumanie, Laura Codruţa Kövesi, a été placée jeudi soir sous contrôle judiciaire par les procureurs de la Section chargée de l’investigation des infractions en justice. Il s’agit d’un dossier où elle est mise en examen, étant accusée d’abus de fonction, acceptation de pots-de-vin et de faux témoignage. A l’issue des auditions qui ont duré plus de 6 heures, Mme Kövesi a précisé que l’on lui avait interdit de parler avec la presse de son enquête, estimant qu’il s’agit là d’une mesure censée « la museler et ne plus parler de ce qui se passe au sein du système judiciaire de Roumanie ». Laura Codruţa Kövesi a aussi rappelé qu’elle était en train de passer par une procédure internationale de désignation du procureur européen et une fonction qu’elle pourrait très bien obtenir, au grand désespoir de certains, a-t-elle encore précisé. Rappelons aussi que Mme Kövesi bénéficie du soutien du PE pour le poste de procureur européen, dont le titulaire sera établi après des négociations avec le Conseil de l’UE. Ce dernier préfère, lui, le candidat français Jean-François Bohnert. Deux rounds de négociations ont eu lieu jusqu’ici, sans aucun résultat. Les prochaines discussions sont prévues les 4 et 10 avril. Notons aussi que le futur Parquet Européen devrait devenir opérationnel vers la fin 2020.

    Armement – Le Département d’Etat américain a approuvé la vente, vers la Roumanie, de missiles sol-air à longue portée HIMARS. Ces missiles ne peuvent pas être livrés à un autre pays sans l’approbation spéciale du gouvernement de Washington. A part la Roumanie, la Pologne et le Bahrein pourront se procurer de tels missiles sophistiqués de défense et d’attaque. Les systèmes HIMARS peuvent frapper des cibles terrestres se trouvant à 300 km de distance, avec des munitions intelligentes guidées par GPS. Selon le ministère roumain de la Défense, ce rachat est pour la Roumanie un intérêt essentiel pour la sécurité, car il permettra de renforcer la sécurité nationale et régionale. Notons que la Roumanie achètera aussi 54 lanceurs de missiles et 216 missiles ainsi que d’autres systèmes de données et des véhicules. Les commandes devraient être finalisées à la fin août 2021.

    Exercices – Le dragueur de mines roumain « Lt. Lupu Dinescu» participe aujourd’hui à un entrainement commun avec le chasseur de mines français « Capricorne », en Mer Noire, dans les eaux territoriales de la Roumanie. L’objectif de l’exercice est de maintenir un haut niveau d’instruction des militaires marins roumains. Cette activité fait partie du paquet de mesures de l’OTAN censées renforcer la confiance entre alliés et la sécurité dans la zone de la Mer Noire. A la fin des exercices, le chasseur de mine français « Capricorne » fera escale dans le port de Constanta, jusqu’au 31 mars, le temps pour une délégation française de faire plusieurs visites officielles dans la ville. Samedi, le Capricorne sera également visité par un groupe d’élèves de Constanta.

    Tennis – La joueuse de tennis roumaine Simona Halep, n° 3 mondiale, s’est inclinée devant la Tchque, Karolina Pliskova, n° 7 WTA, dans les demi-finales du tournoi de Miami, aux Etats-Unis. La Roumaine a raté ainsi la chance de remonter sur la première position du classement mondiale, qu’elle a cédée en janvier à la Japonaise Naomi Osaka.

    VISIT The PM of Romania, Viorica Dăncilă, is in the USA until Tuesday, to take part in the conference of the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), at the invitation of the AIPAC president Morton Fridman, and executive director Howard Kohr. On Saturday, the PM met in Washington with representatives of American companies having invested in Romania. According to a government press release, Dancila presented the measures taken by her Cabinet to enhance the attractiveness of the Romanian business environment. The American investors appreciated the opportunities offered by Bucharest for the development of the strategic defence industry and for investments in healthcare, energy, research and innovation, IT and communications. The participants also discussed the recent changes in the public private partnership legislation, emphasising that it includes broader contractual terms and allows for more flexible financing, enabling parties to share the risks and benefits.




    MEETING EU transport ministers and state secretaries are taking part on March 26th and 27th in the informal meeting of EU transport ministers held in Bucharest under the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU. They will discuss, among other things, the future of mobility in the Union and means to strengthen connectivity and cohesion by means of the TEN-T network. According to the organisers, an enlarged and consolidated trans-European transport network will help improve territorial cohesion, the accessibility and connectivity of all regions in the EU, thus stimulating investments and narrowing development gaps.




    TRANSPORT The Romanian Transport Operator Federation (FORT) announces in a news release that on Wednesday, March 27th they will protest in Strasbourg against the EU Mobility Package 1, alongside other employer associations from Romania and Eastern European countries. The Federation is against the obligation for drivers to return home at least every 4 weeks or, if a driver chooses the reduced weekly rest option, every 3 weeks on the road. FORT also demands a review of regular weekly rest rules and is also against applying the rules of posting to road transport.




    PROTESTS The weekly “yellow vest protest in France took place on Saturday under strict police control, following the incidents of March 16th in Paris, which had prompted President Emmanuel Macrons criticism of the police force. According to Radio Romanias correspondent in Paris, protesters access to certain parts of the city was prohibited, and the police checked thousands of people to identify individuals intent on resorting to violence. Across the country, many individuals were detained while trying to reach Paris equipped with baseball bats, projectiles, gas masks. Significant clashes between the protesters and the police were also reported in Lyon, Lille and Montpellier, but order has been restored. The so-called “yellow vest movement emerged in November as a protest against a rise in fuel prices.




    TENNIS The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, no 3 in the world, is playing today against Slovenian Polona Hercog, in the 3rd round of the Miami tournament, which has over 9 million US dollars in total prize money. In the doubles, Simona Halep and Julia Goerges (Germany) qualified on Saturday in the 8th-finals. Another Romanian, Raluca Olaru, playing together with Croatian Darija Jurak, is also playing in the 8th-finals of the doubles tournament, against Lara Arruabarrena of Spain / Heather Watson (UK). Also today, Monica Niculescu of Romania and Abigail Spears of the USA, defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany) / Lucie Hradecka (the Czeck Republic), 2-0, 6-3, 7-5.     FOOTBALL Romanias national football team was defeated on Saturday night, 2-1, in Sweden, in a EURO 2020 qualifier match held at the Friends Arena in Solna. On Tuesday, Romania is playing at home against Faroe. The top 2 teams in each group qualify into the final tournament. The drawing for the Euro 2020 takes place in Bucharest on November 30. The Romanian capital city will also host 4 final tournament games, 3 in the group stage and an 8th-final. Meanwhile, Romanias Under-21 team Thursday lost a friendly against Spain, and are scheduled to play on Monday against Denmark. In the 2019 European Youth Championship hosted by Italy and San Marino, Romania plays in Group C, alongside England, France and Croatia.
