    Sports Weekend


    This weekend will be seeing the eighth leg of the Romanian Football Superleague. The race for the first position in the ranking involves Rapid Bucharest, which will be taking on Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe on Friday.


    The most important games for winning the championship and for qualification in the European Cups will take place on Saturday and Sunday. At the top of the table Farul Constanta goes to Craiova to play local side Universitatea, a team ranking fourth, which is hankering for a place in preliminaries of the European competition Conference League. A wrong step taken by Farul at this point is tantamount to failure as only three points are separating them from the runner-up FCSB they are going to meet in Ovidiu on 21st May. FCSB will be up against CFR Cluj, the champions of the past years in Bucharest on Sunday. CFR is presently ranking third and stands slim chances of winning the sixth consecutive title.


    On Friday FC Voluntari plays FC Botoşani while on Saturday, Petrolul Ploieşti, plays on their own turf Hermannstadt. Universitatea Cluj will be up against Chindia Târgovişte, and if they win they will diminish Chindias chances to remain in the Superleague. On Sunday, CS Mioveni, which has already demoted will be playing on their own turf UTA Arad with the same number of points as Chindia and also striving to avoid demotion. Another match in the hot area at the bottom of the table is pitching FC Arges against FCU Craiova, Arges is also making desperate efforts to remain in the first Romanian football league.

    Today’s sports programme begins
    with the latest from the women’s national handball league. Two of the sides,
    which represented Romania in the European cups, met on Thursday. So, Rapid
    Bucharest, a team qualified for the Champions League quarterfinals was up
    against SCM Ramnicu Valcea, which stopped in the European League’s quarters.




    Rapid clinched a 36-33 win after
    a very balanced game decided in the last minutes. French Orlane Kanor scored most
    of the goals for Rapid whereas Serbian left back Jovana Kovacevic put up the
    best show for the visitors, with 8 goals scored. The vice champions of the last
    year’s edition, CSM Bucharest, are presently topping the ranking with 61 points
    out of 21 matches. Gloria Bistrita and the last year’s champions, Rapid, are
    coming next, each with 49 points out of 20 games.




    The Junior World Artistic
    Championships is underway in Antalya, Turkey. Romania ranked eighth in the
    women’s team contest on Thursday. Gabriela Vănoagă, Crina Tudor and Anamaria
    Mihăescu represented Romania in the aforementioned contest. Japan won gold, the
    USA took silver and Italy bronze. Two Romanians qualified for the individual
    all round finals, Gabriela Vănoagă, in the tenth position and Crina Tudor in
    the twentieth position in terms of the points won. Vănoagă had also qualified
    for the beam finals, where she ranked fourth.

    Romanian tennis player Irina Begu on Sunday won the
    WTA 125 tournament in Bucharest, a competition with 115 thousand dollars in
    prize money. The Romanian obtained a two-set win 6-3, 6-3 against the Hungarian
    challenger Reka-Luca Jani. The second-seeded Romanian, who is 41st
    in the WTA ranking, obtained the victory in two hours. The Hungarian challenger
    put up a balanced show in both sets but the Romanian eventually won her second
    WTA tournament after the one in Palermo in July.




    Romania played Slovakia in an away Davis Cup
    competition this weekend. The hosts eventually obtained a 3-1 win in the World
    Group. The only Romanian win belonged to 19 year old player Nicholas David
    Ionel, 283rd in the ATP ranking. On Friday he secured a 6-7, 7-5, 6-4
    win against Norbert Gombos. The other games were won by Slovakia, which has
    thus qualified for the competition’s next stage.






    In the Champions League, Romanian women’s handball side
    CSM Bucharest secured a 33-26 away win against Brest-Bretagne of France. The
    most effective Romanian player was Elizabeth Omoregie with 6 goals scored.
    After two legs, German side Bietigheim ranks first in the group, followed by Vipers
    Kristiansand of Norway and CSM Bucharest each with four points. Our handballers
    will next be playing the German side in Bucharest on Sunday.




    In group B, in Bucharest, Romania’s champions Rapid
    ended in a 32-all draw their match against French champions Metz. Elisa
    Buceschi and Lorena Ostase proved to be the best Romanian scorers, each with five
    goals. Hungarian side Gyor tops the table with four points, followed by Metz
    and Rapid each with three. Rapid will be playing Kastamonu in Turkey on Sunday.




    Last weekend saw the matches of the 11th
    leg of Romania’s Football Superleague. On Friday, FC Voluntari secured a 1-0
    home win against FCU Craiova, while in Ploiesti, southern Romania, Farul
    Constanta obtained a 3-1 win against local side Petrolul. On Saturday,
    Hermanstadt defeated UTA, in Arad, western Romania, while in Sfantu Gheorghe,
    local side Sepsi trounced FC Botosani 7-0. Rapid, on their own turf, clinched a
    2-1 win against FC Mioveni. On Sunday in Medias, Universitatea Cluj outperformed

    the European Championship of 2023. Croatia had won the first game with the same
    score. Romania ranks first in the group’s standings with 9 points followed by
    Croatia also with 9, Israel with 3 and the Faroe Islands with zero points. The
    first two sides are qualified for the final tournament next year. Romania’s
    next game is a home one against the Faroes on September 7th while
    four days later they will be taking on Israel in an away game.




    Romania’s male water polo side lost to Montenegro 13-8 in the play-offs
    of the European Championships underway in Split, Croatia. Romania will be
    playing Israel in the semifinals in order to occupy one place between the 9th
    and 12th teams in the ranking. Our women’s side also lost to Hungary
    22-0 and will be up against Slovakia for one of the 9th and 12th
    positions.




    Romania’s swimmers have triumphantly ended the World Junior Championships
    in Lima with another gold medal. In the finals of the 50 meter freestyle race,
    Bianca Costea came first in 25 seconds and 35 hundredths. The other medalists
    were David Popovici, Vlad Stancu, Patrick Sebastian Dinu, Stefan Cozma and
    Alexandru Constantinescu.




    Romania also boasts 9 medals, five gold and four silver at the European
    Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Hazewinkel, Belgium. The medalists were
    the men’s coxed four and the women’s four, the women’s quadruple sculls, the women’s
    and men’s eights. The women’s coxed four became silver medalist in the aforementioned
    competition and so did the men’s pair, the men’s four and the women’s double
    scull.




    Now let’s have a look at the results of the 9th leg of Romania’s
    first football league. CS Mioveni has obtained a one-nil win against Sepsi Sf.
    Gheorghe, Universitatea Cluj ended in a one-all draw their game against FCU Craiova,

    Three Romanian football teams this past Thursday have
    advanced to the play-off stage as part of the Conference league European
    competition. In the third preliminary round, the most spectacular feat was Universitatea
    Craiova’s 3-nil home win against Ukraine’s Zarya Lugansk. Universitatea came
    from behind in the wake of a first-leg nil-1 defeat away from home. Scoring for
    Universitatea were the Brazilian Raul Silva, in minute 5, Ştefan Baiaram, in
    minute 53, and Nicuşor Bancu, in minute 57. It was Universitatea’s first
    official game with head-coach Mirel radio at the helm. In the play-offs, Universitatea
    are pitted against Israeli opponents Hapoel Beer-Sheva.




    In Cluj, holders CFR defeated Shakhtar Soligorsk of Belarus,
    1-nil. CFR’s Spanish footballer Jefte Betancor sealed the fate of the game on 37
    minutes. We recall that in the first leg, hosted by a Turkish stadium last
    week, CFR were held to a blank draw. In the confrontation for a place in the Conference
    League’s group stage, CFR will next play Slovenian team NK Maribor.


    In Bucharest, FCSB defeated Slovakian opponents Dunajska
    Streda, 1-nil, in front of 40,000 fans in the stands, a record high number this
    year for a fixture involving a Romanian squad. FCSB’s Andrei Cordea scored, in
    minute 29. We recall FCSB had for the first leg, away from home, also 1-nil. In
    the play-offs, FCSB take on Norway’s Viking Stavanger.






    Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe was the only Romanian team that did
    not manage to move past the Conference League’s third preliminary round, being
    eliminated by Djurgaarden of Sweden. The latter team secured a 3-1 win in the
    double legged-tie against the Romanians. Djugaarden’s Romanian international
    footballer, Cosmin Matei, drew first blood on 8 minutes.






    Matches
    counting towards the Romanian football Superleague’s fifth round are scheduled
    at the weekend. On Friday, FC Argeş face FC U Craiova. On Saturday, Universitatea
    Cluj play UTA, Arad, away from home, then in Ploiesti, in the south, Petrolul
    go against Rapid Bucharest. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova are pitted
    against CS Mioveni, CFR Cluj face FC Botoşani while FCSB take on Chindia

In mens competition our athletes won the qualifying group C held in Malta, after securing wins against the host country, Lithuania and Ireland.

Ranking fifth in group A, CSM will be meeting CSKA Moscow in the play-offs for a place in the quarter finals. Romanian Florentin Pera is currently coaching the Russian side.

    The delegation to represent Romania at the Olympic Games in
    Tokyo grew up to 84 athletes on Sunday. 18 athletes making up the Romanian
    men’s and women’s eights have secured their qualification during the
    pre-Olympic regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.




    The two boats have come second in the races, getting the
    plane tickets for Tokyo. In the women’s competition Romania’s boat came second
    to China and before Germany while our male rowers came after New Zealand with
    Italy in the third position.


    In the single scull, Mihai Chiruţă has failed to qualify for
    Tokyo and so has the Romanian four. So, Romania will send to Tokyo 36 athletes
    and nine teams who will be competing in the men’s and women’s four oar races,
    women’s pair oar and double sculls, the men’s pair and the men’s and women’s
    eight races.




    Last weekend saw the matches of the eighth leg of the
    Romania’s first football league. On Friday in Clinceni, southern Romania, local
    side Academica secured a 4-3 win against FC Botosani. On Saturday, CFR Cluj
    clinched a 3-1 away win against Universitatea Craiova whereas the game pitching
    Sepsi against FCSB ended in a 2-all draw.

    Romania. Poli Iasi and Hermannstadt are on the last two places in the ranking

    The delegation to represent Romania at the Olympic Games in
    Tokyo grew up to 84 athletes on Sunday. 18 athletes making up the Romanian
    men’s and women’s eights have secured their qualification during the
    pre-Olympic regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.




    The two boats have come second in the races, getting the
    plane tickets for Tokyo. In the women’s competition Romania’s boat came second
    to China and before Germany while our male rowers came after New Zealand with
    Italy in the third position.


    In the single scull, Mihai Chiruţă has failed to qualify for
    Tokyo and so has the Romanian four. So, Romania will send to Tokyo 36 athletes
    and nine teams who will be competing in the men’s and women’s four oar races,
    women’s pair oar and double sculls, the men’s pair and the men’s and women’s
    eight races.




    Last weekend saw the matches of the eighth leg of the
    Romania’s first football league. On Friday in Clinceni, southern Romania, local
    side Academica secured a 4-3 win against FC Botosani. On Saturday, CFR Cluj
    clinched a 3-1 away win against Universitatea Craiova whereas the game pitching
    Sepsi against FCSB ended in a 2-all draw.

    On Saturday in Lisbon, Romania secured a dramatic 28-27 win against
    Portugal in the second leg of the Rugby Europe Championship. The Romanians
    managed to win in the last minutes of a game when they had been dominated all
    the time. Alexandru Savin scored the first try for the Romanian side in the 49th
    minute; Nicolas Onutu added a second in the 74th minute and Ovidiu
    Cojocaru scored a third on 79 minutes. Daniel Plai converted the last two tries
    while Florin Vlaicu converted three penalty shots on minutes 4, 21 and 34. The
    Romanian side is to play Spain in Bucharest next week.






    The 2021 and 2022 editions of Rugby Europe Championship are counting
    towards qualification for the World Cup due in France in 2023. Under the
    regulations, the first two sides in the ranking are directly qualified for the
    final tournament whereas the team on the third position will play a tie
    game.






    Let’s move on to handball now, as Romanian women’s side CSM Bucharest
    will be up against Russian side CSKA Moscow in the quarterfinals of the
    Champions League. CSM lost to SCM Ramnicu Valcea in Bucharest on Saturday 21-27
    but won on aggregate after a 33-24 victory in the first game. The Russians
    secured an aggregate win against Krim Mercator Ljubljana of Slovenia.






    In men’s competitions, the selection of Kosovo obtained an unexpected
    30-25 win against the Romanian national handball side in Group 8 of the second
    round of the European Championship preliminaries. Sweden ranks first in the
    group with 6 points out of three games followed by Romania and Kosovo with 3
    points out of 4 games. Montenegro comes 4th with 2 points out of 3
    games. The first two sides in each group as well as the four best sides on the
    third position are qualified for the final tournament.

    Craiova clinched a 2-0 win against local side Gaz Metan. On Saturday, FC

    obtained a 1-0 win against UTA Arad.
