    Corona Braşov as an absolute first has won the Erste Liga regional ice hockey competition. In the final, Coriona Brasov defeated Hungarian challengers Ferencváros Budapest, 4-nil on aggregate. Erste Liga’s final act was held according to the best-in-seven-games system. In their last fixture on Wednesday, Corona grabbed a 4-1 home win against Ferencváros.

     

     

    In the first two fixtures in Budapest, Corona Brasov grabbed a 5-3 and a 4-nil win, respectively. In the first leg on home court, Corona outclassed Ferencvaros, 5-2. It is for the third time that Corona bravo have played the Erste Liga final. We recall that in 2014, Corona Brasov lost to Slovakia’s Nove Zamky. In 2021 Corona was defeated by Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc.

     

     

    We recall the Romanian teams won the Erste Liga competition six times. HC Csikszereda won the inaugural edition in 2009. Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc emerged as winner three times, in 2011, 2021 and 2022. ACSH Gheorgheni won the 2023 edition of Erste Liga.

     

     

    Universitatea Craiova football team on Wednesday made public the termination, by mutual consent, of the contract with Bulgarian head-coach Ivailo Petev. We recall Petev had been appointed at the helm of Universitatea Craiova in November. Petev was Universitatea Craiova’s fourth head-coach in the ongoing competition season, after Eugen Neagoe, Laurenţiu Reghecampf and Corneliu Papură.

     

     

    Ivailo Petev took over Universitatea Craiova at the end of the regular season’s home series, when Universitatea Craiova was 5th-placed. After three rounds as part of Group1, with Ivailo Petev at the helm, Universitatea Craiova are 3rd-placed. However, last week, the team sustained two major defeats. In the quarterfinals of Romania’s Cup, after extra time, Universitatea Craiova sustained a nil-1 defeat by Otelul from Galati; Universitatea Craiova was thus ousted from competition. Then in the championship’s derby in Bucharest, Universitatea Craiova was outclassed by FCSB, nil-2. Former midfielder Petev, among other things, was the head-coach of the national teams of Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Petev has rather recently head-coached Bulgarian team Ludogorets Razgrad. Ivailo Petev had also head-coached Levski Sofia and Dinamo Zagreb.

     

     

    News from women’s tennis: on Friday and Saturday, the match is scheduled, pitting Ukraine against Romania. The confrontation counts towards the qualifiers for the Billie Jean King Cup. The match will be hosted in Fernandina Beach in the US state of Florida. In the women’s singles, best-placed in the Romanian team according to the world rankings are Ana Bogdan, who is WTA 64th-placed and Jaqueline Cristian, WTA 75th. Of the Ukrainian team, best-placed are Elina Svitolina, WTA number 18, and Lesya Turenko, who is WTA 42nd-placed.

    Romania has grabbed five medals, one gold, two silver and two bronze at the European Wrestling Championships held in Bucharest. The gold went to Andreea Ana in the 55-kg category. The silver medals went to Kateryna Zelenykh in the 65-kg category and Alexandra Anghel in the 73-kg category. The bronze medals were won by Denis Florin Mihai in the 55-kg category and Răzvan Arnăut in the 60kg category, both competing in the Greek-Roman competition.

    At the European Weightlifting Championships in Sofia, Romanian athletes last week won eight medals. Mihaela Cambei won gold in the snatch, clean and jerk and total events in the 49-kg category. In the 71-kg category, Loredana Toma won gold in the snatch and total events. Valentin Ioandi Iancu won silver in the 61-kg category in the clean and jerk event. Finally, Ioana Mădălina Miron and Andreea Cotruța won bronze in the clean and jerk event in the 45-kg and 59-kg category, respectively. The Championships are due to end on Tuesday.

    Romania’s rugby team lost 49-24 to Portugal on Saturday in Budapest. Romania thus ranks 2nd in Rugby Europe Championship and will play Georgia away from home in the semi-finals.

    In the women’s EHF Champions’ League, CSM Bucharest has qualified to the quarterfinals playoffs after finishing Group A in 4th place. In the final fixture on Sunday, CSM lost 25-29 to Odense of Denmark away from home. Rapid Bucharest failed to qualify ranking 7th in Group B and losing the final match to Team Esbjerg of Denamrk 33-24 at home.

    In the EHF European league, Gloria Bistrița and Dunărea Brăila have advanced to the quarterfinals. Gloria won Group C after winning on Saturday against Bensheim / Auerbach of Germany, 33-24. In turn, Dunărea won Group B with the same number of points as Thüringer of Germany, also winning this weekend 24-19 against Chambray Touraine of France away from home. In Group D, CSM Târgu Jiu was bottom of the group tables, having sustained 6 losses. In the last match CSM lost 20-22 to Mosonmagyaróvár of Hungary at home. The first leg of the quarterfinals is scheduled for mid-March. Gloria will take on Mosonmagyaróvár away from home, whereas Dunărea will play Podravka Koprivnica of Croatia at home.

    This weekend saw matches as part of the 26th round of the Romanian Football Superleague. On Friday, Petrolul Ploiești won 2-1 against Poli Iași at home, while Rapid Bucharest won 2-0 against FC Hermannstadt on home turf. On Saturday, UTA Arad won 1-0 against FC Voluntari, whereas CFR Cluj won 3-1 against FCU Craiova away from home. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova drew 2-2 against FC Botoșani, while Dinamo Bucharest won 3-1 against Oțelul Galați. On Monday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe will play Farul Constanța, while Universitatea Cluj will take on FCSB. FCSB tops the league tables, 6 points ahead of runner-up Rapid Bucharest.

    We start with water polo. Romanias men’s water polo team obtained their second victory at the European Championship in Croatia. On Sunday, in Dubrovnik, the Romanian athletes defeated Slovenia, 13 to 5, after, in the first game, they had won 12 to 8 against the team of the Netherlands. Romania ranks first in group D, with 6 points, followed by Slovakia and the Netherlands, both with three points. In the last game in the group, the Romanians will be up against the Slovakian team on Tuesday. The two top-ranking teams qualify for the play-off for the quarterfinals.



    Next news from handball. This past weekend saw matches played within the European Women’s Handball Cups. In the Champions League, on Saturday, Rapid Bucharest lost, in Slovenia, to Krim Ljubljana, 24 to 25. In group B, Rapid is ranked 7th, on the last but one place with 7 points. In group A, on Sunday, CSM Bucharest defeated the Montenegrin team Buducnost Podgorica, 44 to 26, on home ground. The Romanian champions are ranked 3rd in the group ranking.



    In the EHF European League, the second continental women’s handball competition, three teams from Romania played over the weekend. On Saturday, in group C, Gloria Bistriţa defeated, at home, the Polish team Lublin, score 26 to 23. In group D, CSM Târgu Jiu was defeated, away from home by the Hungarian team Mosonmagyaróvár, score 33 to 27. Sunday, in Buzău, in group B, Dunărea Brăila won 27 to 21 against the French team Chambray Touraine.



    The European Men’s Handball Championship starts in Germany this week. Romania qualified for this championship after a 28-year break. At the last European championship participation, in 1996, when the competition took place in Spain, Romania took 9th place, after winning only two games, against Denmark and Hungary. Now, in Germany, the Romanian handball players will play in Group B, alongside Spain, Austria and Croatia. Romania’s first game is scheduled for Friday, in Mannheim, against Austria.



    We end with tennis. The Romanian players in the qualifying games for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, were the first to find out their opponents. According to the drawing of lots, Irina Bara will play Yuliya Hatouka from Belarus in the first round of the qualifiers. Miriam Bulgaru will be up against Ye-Xin Ma, from China, and Andreea Mitu will face Talia Gibson, from Australia. Sorana Cîrstea, Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian were directly accepted to the main draw. (LS)

    This weekend will see matches played in the Romanian football Superliga, counting for the 17th stage. On Friday, two matches are scheduled: Hermannstadt versus Poli Iasi and Petrolul Ploiesti versus FC Botoşani. On Saturday, Farul Constanţa will play the team from Voluntari, and UTA Arad will be up against CFR Cluj team in Cluj. Sundays first match will take place in Galati, between Oţelul and Universitatea Craiova. The star match of the stage is scheduled at 8:30 p.m., in Bucharest, at the National Arena, and will pit Bucharest teams Dinamo and FCSB, formerly known as Steaua.



    The confrontation between the best Romanian football teams has always been interesting, regardless of the places occupied in the ranking, at the time of the match. Now, for example, FCSB is on first place, and Dinamo, on 15th place, the last but one. The leader of the ranking won 10 of the 16 matches played in this edition of the championship, lost two and ended four in a draw. As for Dinamo they have two wins, four draws and ten defeats. Of the last ten matches between the two teams, three ended in a draw. FCSB won five, and Dinamo, two. Dinamo’s last success was recorded in February 2021, with the score 1-0, in Romanias Cup, but in September, Dinamo came back with a vengeance, in the first league, obtaining the score 6-0. In these circumstances, FCSB seems, today, the favorite team, but, often, when it came to the Romanian football classic derby, the statistics have often proved misleading.



    The 17th stage of the Superliga continues on Monday. FC U Craiova will face Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe at home, then Rapid Bucharest will play on home ground against Universitatea Cluj. Its worth mentioning the impressive nine-decade history of the matches between Rapid Bucharest and CFR Cluj. The first direct matches between the two teams took place in the first edition of the national championship, Division A, in the 1933 – 1934 season. Universitatea won at home, score 2-1, then CFR also won, on home ground, score 1-0. (LS)

    Depuis plusieurs décennies déjà, les sports roumains se confrontent à une médiocrité qui amplifie la nostalgie d’un passé brillant marqué par des victoires dans les années ’70 – ’80 et même ’90. Sur cette toile de fond, le titre de championne du monde de mini-foot décroché samedi a été reçu avec enthousiasme, non seulement par les supporters mais aussi par la presse spécialisée. Le mini-foot c’est une variation du foot classique joué sur un terrain plus petit à revêtement synthétique le plus souvent dans un format restreint.

    La joie a été d’autant plus intense que la finale de la Coupe du Monde organisée aux Emirats Arabes Unis a été remportée à l’issue d’un match spectaculaire. Les adversaires du Kazakhstan menaient les Roumains sur le score de 2 buts à 0 quelques minutes seulement avant la fin. Lorsque le résultat semblait être scellé, Marius Balogh a fait preuve d’un sang froid remarquable pour inscrire deux buts et porter le match aux prolongations. Le match s’est terminé à égalité, à 2 partout et il a fallu pas moins de 30 tirs aux buts pour que la Roumanie s’impose finalement sur le score de 12 buts à 11. Bogdan Covaci a marqué le but victorieux après que le gardien Dragoş Niţu ait défendu le dernier but des adversaires.

    L’itinéraire des Roumains jusqu’en finale de la Coupe du Monde 2023 a été impeccable : 10 à 1 contre le Soudan, 3 à 2 contre l’Espagne et 0 partout contres les Etats Unis dans la phase des poules. 7 buts à 0 contre la Thaïlande dans les huitièmes de finale et 2 buts à 0 contre les Emirats Arabes Unis dans les quarts et 3 buts à 0 contre la Hongrie dans la demi-finale. Le trophée de la Coupe du Monde était l’unique titre majeur qui manquait à la sélection nationale de mini-foot, six fois championne européenne et vice championne du Monde. La Roumanie s’enorgueillie déjà de deux médailles de bronze à la Coupe du Monde de mini-foot sur trois participations.

    Pour les passionnés roumains du foot, le mois de novembre a commencé par une performance splendide en mini-foot mais le bilan final du mois et de l’année dépend du parcours de la sélection nationale de foot de Roumanie. Elle affronte le 18 novembre en Hongrie la sélection d’Israël et le 21 elle reçoit à Bucarest la visite de la Suisse dans les derniers matchs du Groupe I des préliminaires de l’Euro de foot de l’année prochaine en Allemagne. A l’issue de huit matchs sans aucune défaite, la Roumanie mène le groupe avec 16 points, suivie par la Suisse, avec 15 points en sept matchs et par Israël, avec 11 points à l’issue de six matchs. A cause de la guerre au Proche Orient, Israël a été obligé à ajourner les matchs prévus initialement pour la semaine dernière et à jouer les matchs à domicile dans un autre pays. Les deux premières équipes du groupe accèdent au tournoi final.

    La dernière participation à l’Euro de foot de la Roumanie remonte à 2016, alors que la dernière participation à la Coupe du Monde de notre sélection nationale est celle de 1998 en France.

    The Romanian Football Cup schedules, this week, new matches from the group stage, namely from the second leg. On Tuesday, in group A, Corvinul Hunedoara, from the second league, defeated, at home, the trophy holder, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, score 1-0, and in Târgovişte, Petrolul Ploiesti defeated Chindia, a team from the second echelon, score 2- 0. On Wednesday, Hermannstadt defeated Progresul Pecica, from the third league, 6-0 away from home. In group B, CSA Steaua Bucharest, from the second league, ended in a nil draw 0-0, with Rapid Bucharest, at home. On Thursday, two more matches will be played: CSM Alexandria against FC Botoşani and the Cluj derby: Universitatea against CFR. In group C, on Tuesday, in Galati, Oţelul ended in a 1-all draw the match with FCSB. On Wednesday, FC U Craiova 1948 won away from home, score 1-0, the match against SCM Zalău, a team from the third echelon. On Thursday, in Oradea, FC Bihor will be up against Dinamo. In group D, on Wednesday, CS Tunari, from the second league, and FC Voluntari ended the match in a 1-all draw, and Craiova University defeated UTA Arad 1-0 in Oradea. Thursdays third match of the group will be Gloria Buzău with Farul Constanţa. The two top ranking teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals.



    Now news from volleyball. Steaua Bucharest qualified for the round of 16 of the Challenge Cup in men’s volleyball. The military team defeated the Luxembourg team Lorentzweiler, score 3-0, on Wednesday, in Bucharest, in the second leg of the preliminary round. Steaua also won away from home, 3-1. The next opponent of the Romanian team will be the Austrian team Ried im Innkreis, the first match being scheduled for November 29, away from home.



    Let’s move on to women’s basketball. The Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe team was defeated at home by the Hungarian team Diósgyőr, with the score 80-68, in the fifth stage of Group A of the Euroleague. The Romanian champions, debuting in the first European echelon, have lost all the matches played in the group so far. Sepsi will play their next match on November 22, away from home, against group leader Fenerbahce Istanbul.



    From men’s basketball, let’s recall that U-BT Cluj-Napoca dramatically defeated the Greek team Aris Thessaloniki away from home, with the score 61-59, in EuroCup, group B. The Romanian champions achieved their fourth victory in the second continental interclub competition. U-BT will play the next match on November 8, at home, against the German team Ulm. (LS)

    Romania has one of the lowest percentages in Europe when it comes to
    practicing sports, either as a leisure activity or professionally. The
    consequences can be easily seen in the increasingly precarious health of the
    younger generation and Romania’s results in international sports competitions.
    Due to a shortage of athletes, Romania has not won a medal in world
    competitions in athletics, gymnastics and wrestling for many years. In football
    and rugby, Romania is in the grey area of world rankings, with national sides
    being a source of constant disappointment.




    To support sports and physical activity in general, events were also
    staged in Romania a few days ago as part of the European Week of Sport. At the
    opening, we asked Valeria Răcilă van Groningen, who was Romania’s Olympic
    rowing champion in 1984 at the Los Angeles Games, how hard it is today to draw
    children to sports:




    It’s very difficult at the moment, for other temptations are bigger for
    young people today. An event such as this encourages physical activity, and we
    know that in Romania we have children who suffer from heart diseases and
    obesity and we hope such events will encourage them do to more physical
    activities, not necessarily become Olympic champions, but practice sports for
    pleasure and if they are attracted to a certain sport, pursue it
    professionally.




    The great former fencer and 1996 Olympic champion Laura Badea told us:






    First of all they have to want to do some form of physical activity, and
    that means more health, less need of hospitals, less need of medicine. Children
    must understand that sport is an education. Not necessarily professionally, but
    practicing a sport helps you organise your time better, be more active, have a
    healthy mind in a healthy body, and also, if they want to achieve results, it
    is a launch pad, a starting point for those who truly wish to achieve great
    results.




    Let’s just add that the European Week of Sport is an initiative of the
    European Commission aimed at promoting sports and physical activity around
    Europe. The project forms part of the
    European Union’s new #BeActive campaign and promotes a healthy and active
    lifestyle and raises awareness about the importance of sports and an active
    lifestyle for the health and wellbeing of communities. (CM)

  • Cinq médailles en aviron pour la Roumanie

    Cinq médailles en aviron pour la Roumanie

    Ce fut une édition du Championnat du monde d’aviron particulièrement riche en médailles pour la Roumanie. A Belgrade, en Serbie, les sportives roumaines ont remporté deux médailles d’or dimanche, durant le dernier jour de la compétition. Les premières à décrocher l’or ont été les rameuses de deux de couple. Ancuţa Bodnar et Simona Radiş – championnes olympiques en-titre – se sont imposées face aux équipages de la Lituanie et des Etats-Unis qui ont terminé en 2e et respectivement 3e position.

    Puis ce fut à l’équipage de huit de pointe avec barreur à connaitre la gloire. Dans l’épreuve phare de la compétition, l’embarcation roumaine et les rameuses Magdalena Rusu, Roxana Anghel, Adriana Adam, Iuliana Buhuş, Mădălina Bereş, Amalia Bereş, Maria Tivodariu, Ioana Vrînceanu et Victoria-Ştefania Petreanu ont disposé des embarcations des Etats Unis et de l’Australie qui ont terminé en 2e et respectivement 3e position. Ce fut une course très tactique pour les rameuses roumaines qui ont gardé la deuxième position durant les premiers mille mètres avant d’arriver en tête et finir avec un temps de 6 minutes, 1 seconde et 28 centièmes.

    Et ce n’est pas tout, samedi, l’équipage de quatre de pointe sans barreur composé par Mădălina Bereş, Maria Tivodariu, Magdalena Rusu et Amalia Bereş, a décroché l’argent, tandis que les équipages de deux de pointe féminin Ioana Vrînceanu şi Roxana Anghel, et deux de couple féminin, Mariana-Laura Dumitru et Ionela Cozmiuc, se sont adjugées le bronze. Côté messieurs, la Roumanie a terminé 4e dans l’épreuve de huit, derrière le Royaume-Uni, les Pays-Bas et l’Australie. Même si les sportifs roumains ont raté de décrocher de médailles, ils se sont qualifiés aux JO de Paris.

    Juste avant le coup d’envoi de la compétition en Serbie, la présidente de la Fédération roumaine d’aviron et la cheffe de l’Agence nationale pour le sport, Elisabeta Lipă, soit la rameuse la plus décorée de toute l’histoire des Jeux olympiques, affirmait que l’objectif de la fédération dans le Championnat du monde de Belgrade était de propulser un plus grand nombre de sportifs aux JO de Paris. Pari gagné ! 11 équipages roumains sur 13 ont obtenu le billet pour la compétition qui se déroulera l’année prochaine en France du 26 juillet au 11 août.

    Lors de la précédente édition des Jeux Olympiques au Japon, la Roumanie a remporté trois médailles en aviron – dont une d’or au deux de couple féminin et deux d’argent au deux de pointe féminin et quatre de pointe masculin pour terminer en quatrième position dans le classement général. Avec cinq médailles remportées au Championnat du monde d’aviron en Serbie, la Roumanie a terminé en quatrième position après les Pays-Bas, le Royaume Uni et l’Italie.

    L’année dernière lors du Championnat de Monde de Račice, en République Tchèque, la Roumanie a remporté quatre médailles d’or aux épreuves d’aviron simple léger, deux de couple masculin, deux de pointé féminin et huit avec barreur féminin. (trad. Alex Diaconescu)

    Drone. The Romanian foreign ministry
    summoned the Russian charge d’affaires in Bucharest
    to convey the protest of the Romanian side over the violation of
    Romania’s air space, as new drone fragments were found on Saturday on Romanian
    soil, close to the border with Ukraine, and similar to those used by the
    Russian army. State secretary Iulian Fota firmly called on the Russian side to
    cease attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, including those that could pose any
    threat to the safety and security of Romanian citizens living in the region. On
    Saturday, president Klaus Iohannis said the identification of new drone fragments on the
    Romanian territory indicates that an absolutely unacceptable violation has
    taken place of the sovereign air space of NATO member Romania. NATO secretary
    general Jens Stoltenberg, who had a phone conversation with Iohannis,
    expressed full solidarity with Romania.
    He also said there was no indication of Russia’s intent to strike NATO, but
    that these attacks are destabilising.






    Earthquake.
    Morocco declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the
    powerful quake that hit this country on Friday night. More than 2,000 people
    have been killed and another 2,000 injured. The tremor measured 6.8 on the
    Richter scale and caused a lot of panic. Searches for survivors carried out by
    the army, using drones and helicopters, continue in the Atlas mountains region
    and the old city of Marrakesh, which were the worst hit areas. The leaders of
    the 27 EU member states together signed a joint letter to King Mohammed VI of
    Morocco stating their full solidarity with the Moroccan people: as close
    friends and partners of Morocco, we are ready to assist in any way You may seem
    useful, the letter said. The foreign ministry in Bucharest said that according
    to the information available so far to the Romanian embassy in Rabat, there are
    no Romanian citizens among the victims. The embassy is in constant contact with
    the local authorities in charge of managing the consequences of the quake and
    with the Romanian citizens living in Morocco.




    School. Almost 3
    million pupils and pre-school children will begin school on Monday in Romania.
    The new school year is made up of five modules and will end on 22nd
    June next year. Classes will end on 7th June for 12th
    year pupils and on 14th June for 8th year pupils to be
    able to take their baccalaureate and national evaluation exams, respectively. As
    a result of recent changes to education laws, pupils can only be expelled under
    serious circumstances. Another change refers to the introduction of new
    subjects: the study of the history of the Jewish people and the Holocaust,
    which will be taught in 11th grade beginning this year, and the
    study of the history of communism, which will taught as of next year. The
    criteria for granting scholarships have also changed, with fewer pupils to
    benefit. The authorities are also considering measures to prevent and reduce
    drug use in schools, with emphasis on information and education. Education
    minister Ligia Deca said recently
    that a school safety action plan was signed and a legislative framework would
    be drafted to allow for the drug testing of pupils where there is suspicion of
    drug use.


    Sports. CSM
    Bucharest defeated the Danish side Odense Handbold 28-24 on Saturday evening at
    home, in their opening match in Group A of the women’s handball Champions
    League. CSM will next play the German side SG BBM Bietigheim. Another Romanian
    side in this competition, Rapid Bucharest are today playing their first match
    in Group B, against Team Esbjerg if Denmark. And in football, Romania’s
    national side drew 1-all against Israel on Saturday evening at home in
    qualifying Group I in the run-up to Euro 2024. Romania will next face Kosovo at
    home.

    Romanias Sorana Cîrstea has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. Ranked 30th in the world, she defeated Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Cîrstea will next face the Czech player Karolina Muchova, who is world no. 10. In the womens doubles, the Romanian-Ukrainian pair Gabriela Ruse and Marta Kostiuk defeated the Russian-Australian pair Irina Khromacheva and Daria Saville 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and will next face the all-American pair Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula.



    Moving on to volleyball, the Romanian mens side defeated Turkey on Friday 3-2 in Group D of the European Championship hosted by Tel Aviv, in Israel. On Sunday, Romania defeated Greece 3-1 and are playing France on Monday. France top the group with 9 points, followed by Portugal with 7 and Romania with 6.



    The Romanian mens handball side CSM Constanţa reached the EHF European League group stage as they defeated Spains Fraikin BM Granollers 25-22 away in the second leg of the preliminary round. CSM Constanţa will be playing in the competitions Group H, opposite Sporting Lisbon of Portugal, MOL Tatabanya KC of Hungary and KGHM Chrobry Glogow of Poland. Another Romanian side, CS Dinamo Bucharest, will play in Group G opposite trophy holders Fuchse Berlin of Germany, Chambery Savoie Mont Blanc HB of France and RK Izvidac of Bosnia and Hertegovina.

The 8th leg of the Romanian super league was held at the weekend: on Friday, Petrolul Ploiești drew against Oțelul Galați, 2-2 and Rapid Bucharest defeated Dinamo Bucharest 4-nil. On Saturday, FC Voluntari lost to CFR Cluj 1-4 and FCSB defeated CSU Craiova 3-nil. And Sunday, FCU Craiova defeated Farul Constanța 4-nil, while the match between Universitatea Cluj and Politehnica Iași was suspended because of the storm on minute 54, at nil-all, to be resumed on Monday. In the legs final match on Monday, FC Botoșani are playing FC Hermannstadt and Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe are playing UTA.     The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea qualified for the third round of the US Open tournament, the last Grand Slam competition of the year, after defeating the Russian Ana Kalinskaia 6-3, 6-4, on Wednesday, in New York. Cîrstea, seed number 30, won in 65th minute. She thus equaled her best performance at Flushing Meadows. Sorana Cîrstea has never passed the third round at the American Open, a phase she reached in 2009, 2019 and 2020. Last year, the Romanian player lost in the second round. Also on Wednesday, at the US Open, the pair made up of the Romanian Gabriela Ruse and the Ukrainian Marta Kostiuk qualified for the second round of the women’s doubles. Gabriela and Marta defeated another Romanian-Ukrainian pair, Irina Begu and Anhelina Kalinina, score 7-5, 6-2.



    Romania got off to a bad start at the European Men’s Volleyball Championship. In Tel Aviv, in group D, the Romanian players were defeated by Portugal 3-0. Also on Wednesday, the defending Olympic champion France defeated Turkey 3-0. In the first match of the group, Israel defeated Greece 3-2 on Tuesday evening.



    This week will see matches played in the play-off phase of the Romanian Football Cup, the 2023-2024 edition. The four first league teams that played on Tuesday and Wednesday are moving on. On Tuesday, Oţelul Galati defeated FC Bacău, from the third league, 3-1. FC Voluntari had the upper hand on Şelimbăr, from the second echelon, score 2-1. Dinamo Bucharest won, also 2-1, the game with the second league team Metaloglobus Bucharest. On Wednesday, FC Botoşani won against Mioveni, from the second league, score 2-0. The new format of the Romanian Cup, inaugurated in the previous edition, provides for the participation in the play-off phase of 32 teams of which 24 qualified from the previous round and 8 from the first league. The ranking in the first echelon includes the four ranked teams at the end of the play-out of the previous edition of the championship, on the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places, together with the two winners of the play offs for remaining or acceding to the First League and the two new wild card teams of the current edition of the championship.     Romanias rugby team continues preparations for the World Cup, which starts next month in France. On Saturday, in Tbilisi, in a test match, Stejarii, in English the Oaks were defeated by the national team of Georgia, score 56-6. The Romanian national team opened the score in the 3rd minute, with a penalty try converted by Ionel Melinte. The hosts then came back and took the score to 13-3. Melinte brought Romania back into the game in the 23rd minute also by converting a penalty try. The end of the first half, however, belonged to the Georgians, who scored two tries, of which only one was converted, and, at the break, the score was 25 to 6 for Lelos. The second part of the game belonged entirely to the hosts, who grounded the ball in the Romanian team’s in-goal area five more times, and three of the tries were converted. Romania thus lost the second test match of the summer, after, a week ago, it was defeated by the United States team, in Bucharest, 31-17. Next, on Saturday, Romania will face the last test against Italy, away from home. The first game of the Oaks at the World Cup is scheduled for September 9, against Ireland, in Bordeaux.



    Now we pass on to tennis. Sorana Cîrstea remains the best-ranked Romanian player in the world professional hierarchy, being ranked 31st according to the WTA ranking published on Monday. Among the top 100 players in the world are Irina Begu on 39th position and Ana Bogdan on 59th place. The former world leader Simona Halep reached the 578th place. She has not played for more than a year, following the doping scandal in which she was involved and which is still waiting for its outcome in the international sports courts.



    Let’s move on to football. At the weekend, matches were played counting for the fifth stage of the Romanian Superleague. On Friday, FC U Craiova 1948 defeated FC Voluntari in Craiova, 3-1. On Saturday, in Galati, Oţelul ended in a draw, 1 all, with Universitatea Cluj, then Universitatea Craiova defeated Politehnica Iasi 4-1, away from home. On Sunday, Petrolul Ploiesti won 2-0 in Bucharest the match against Rapid. The program ends on Monday, with the game in Bucharest between Dinamo Bucharest and FC Botoşani. Three matches from the fifth stage were postponed to allow the preparation of the teams representing Romania in the preliminaries of the European Conference League competition, namely the match in Sibiu, between Hermannstadt and FCSB, the match in Cluj, between CFR and Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, and the match in Ovidiu, between Farul Constanţa and UTA Arad.     En Roumanie, les marges commerciales pour 14 groupes de produits alimentaires
    ont été plafonnés à compter du 1er
    août pour une période de trois mois. Le décret d’urgence visant de bloquer la
    majoration du prix des aliments essentiels a été approuvé par le gouvernement
    fin juin. Parmi les produits alimentaires à bénéficier de cette réduction
    figurent les produits laitiers, la viande, les fruits et légumes. Selon les
    autorités, aucune limite de prix ne sera imposée aux fermiers. En cas de non
    respect de cette loi, les amendes iront de 20 000 à 400 000 euros.












    Tacot
    – Coup d’envoi lundi du programme « le tacot local », un nouvel instrument par
    le biais duquel les autorités roumaines se proposent de retirer de la
    circulation les vieilles voitures polluantes. En effet, les propriétaires de
    ces véhicules se verront accorder une prime à la casse de 600 euros. Le budget
    est assuré à hauteur de 80 % par le ministère de l’environnement alors que les
    mairies y contribuent avec 20%. Ce programme se déroule jusqu’au 31 août dans
    la limite du budget alloué par le ministère de l’environnement, soit quelque 50
    millions d’euros. Les autorités comptent mettre à la casse quelque 100 000
    véhicules polluants. Lundi soir, le
    ministre de l’Environnement, Mircea Fechet, a affirmé que plusieurs localités
    ont déjà épuisé le budget consacré au programme le Tacot ce qui montre le
    succès de cette initiative.


    Sommet -
    Une nouvelle réunion du Sommet de « l’Initiative
    des trois mers » se déroulera le 6 septembre à Bucarest, sous le haut
    patronage du président roumain Klaus Iohannis. Le lendemain, également à
    Bucarest, un forum des Affaires de l’Initiative des trois mers se déroulera dans
    la capitale. Les principales hôtes de cet événement seront le président du
    Sénat, Nicolae Ciuca et le chef du gouvernement, Marcel Ciolacu. L’initiative
    des trois mers réunit 12 Etats membres de l’Union européenne située dans
    l’espace entre la mer Baltique, la mer Noire et la mer Adriatique. Les Etats
    membres sont l’Autriche, la Bulgarie, la Croatie, la République Tchèque,
    l’Estonie, la Hongrie, la Lettonie, la Lituanie, la Pologne, la Roumanie, la
    Slovaquie et la Slovénie. Un des principaux thèmes à l’ordre du jour du Sommet
    de septembre à Bucarest sera le soutien politique et économique à l’Ukraine.




    Frontières
    – Le trafic est de plus en plus intense aux postes frontaliers roumains
    annoncent les autorités et cela malgré les mesures supplémentaires introduites.
    C’est une période durant laquelle les Roumains de l’étranger rentrent chez eux
    afin de passer leurs vacances au sein de la famille et les touristes de
    Roumanie se dirigent vers des destinations à l’extérieur des frontières
    roumaines. Les autorités annoncent aussi pour le mois d’août l’introduction de
    mesures adaptées à la situation, mais elles recommandent aux chauffeurs
    d’utiliser tous les postes-frontières. Le porte-parole de la police aux
    frontières d’Arad, Alexandru Dinca déclare que des mesures portant majoration
    du personnel policier ont été mises en place. Des postes de contrôle mobiles
    pourraient également être utilisés afin de fluidifier le contrôle aux
    frontières.


    Chômage
    – En Roumanie le chômage a atteint en juin dernier un taux de 5,4%, de 0,1% de
    moins qu’en mai 2023, a annoncé mardi l’Institut national de la
    statistique. Selon cette source, le nombre des chômeurs estimé pour le
    mois de juin s’est élevé à quelque 445 mille personnes, à la baisse tant par
    rapport au mois précédent que par rapport à la même période de l’année
    dernière. Le nombre d’hommes sans emploi a dépassé de 0,8% celui des femmes. Le
    taux de chômage parmi les jeunes de 15 à 24 ans est toujours très élevé, de
    quelque 22%.


    Justice
    – La ministre de la Justice, Alina Gorghiu, a rencontré l’ambassadrice des
    Etats Unis à Bucarest, Kathleen Ann Kavalec. Parmi les sujets de la
    réunion : la coopération judiciaire bilatérale, la lutte contre la traite
    de personnes et la numérisation du système judiciaire de Roumanie. La ministre
    de la Justice a affirmé que le partenariat avec les Etats Unis constituait une
    nécessité pour la promotion des droits de l’Homme et de l’Etat de Droit. La
    responsable roumaine a salué le très bon niveau de la coopération bilatérale
    dans le domaine judiciaire, proposant de nouveaux thèmes de collaboration, tels
    l’éducation juridique dans les écoles de Roumanie. Ce qui plus est, le ministre
    de la Justice a noté l’importance d’une législation prédictible pour le
    développement du milieu des affaires et la stimulation des investissements
    étrangers directs dans l’économie nationale. Alina Gorghiu a démontré que la
    Roumanie était toujours engagée dans la lutte contre la corruption et dans la
    mise en place des recommandations de la Commission de Venise et mentionnées dans le rapport 2022 sur l’Etat
    de Droit. En parlant du trafic des personnes, Alina Gorghiu a affirmé que le
    ministère de la Justice avait respecté ses attributions en conformité avec le rapport
    2022 sur la traite des personnes et avec d’autres rapports à ce sujet.


    Jeux
    de la Francophonie     – Les sportifs roumains ont remporté lundi, cinq nouvelles médailles dont trois
    d’or, une d’argent et une autre de bronze, aux jeux de la Francophonie de
    Kinshasa, au Congo. Aux luttes, les tricolores – bleu-jaune-rouge – ont
    remporté deux médailles d’or, une d’argent et une autre de bronze. C’est
    également de l’or qu’a remporté aussi l’équipe de tennis de table, après la
    finale contre la Tunisie. Dimanche, la Roumanie avait décroché trois
    médailles, – deux d’or et une d’argent – dans la compétition de luttes libres.
    La Roumanie se maintient en première position dans le classement général par
    médailles, 7 d’or, 2 d’argent et 4 de bronze, suivie par le Maroc et par le
    Cameroun. La Roumanie participe avec 57 sportifs (athlétisme, basket féminin,
    luttes libres et luttes africaines, cyclisme routier, tennis de table et judo)
    à la 9e édition des Jeux de la Francophonie qui se déroule du 28
    juillet au 6 août à Kinshasa au Cogo.

    Météo
    – La journée de mercredi s’annonce caniculaire dans le sud et le sud-est de la

    GOVERNMENT The government
    prepares to pass a set of fiscal measures in the coming days, designed to bring
    more money into the state budget and to keep the deficit close to this year’s
    target of 4.4% of GDP. As of this autumn, employees in agriculture,
    constructions and IT may have to contribute 10% of their incomes to the public
    healthcare fund. The government also intends to keep only 2 VAT rates, 9% for
    foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and hospitality services, and 19% for all other
    sectors. Governmental sources say the ruling coalition are also discussing a
    reorganization of the public sector, by scrapping 200,000 posts which are
    currently vacant. At the same time, the Cabinet is working on measures to support
    citizens cope with the rising inflation. The government is considering an
    increase in minimum wages in 2 stages: to roughly 670 euro in September and to
    750 euro as of January next year. But the plan is opposed by private
    entrepreneurs, who say they cannot afford to raise minimum wages for employees.
    According to a recent poll, should this measure be introduced, more than half
    of the private entrepreneurs in the country said they would raise prices for
    their products and services or downsize their staff.


    FIRE A Romanian fire fighter unit specialising in
    wildfires is leaving for France today, as part of a redeployment programme
    organised by the Directorate General for European Civil Protection and
    Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). As many as 40 Romanian fire fighters
    with fire engines, water tanks and other equipment will be stationed in
    Marseilles, on the Mediterranean Coast.


    TRIBUTE The Bucharest National
    Opera orchestra performs tonight for the first time at the Musikverein hall in
    Vienna, in a tribute concert to the Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu. The
    year 2023 was declared the year of Ciprian Porumbescu, to mark 170 years since
    the birth and 140 years since the death of the famous composer. The concert
    will consist exclusively of works by Ciprian Porumbescu: New Moon, the first
    Romanian operetta, the Ballad, the Romanian Rhapsody. The soloists, choir
    and orchestra of the National Opera House in Bucharest are conducted by Daniel
    Jinga, with special guests including maestro Gheorghe Zamfir and the soloist
    Maria Coman.


    UKRAINE A Ukrainian drone
    attack on Moscow hit 2 office buildings last night, the mayor of Russia’s
    capital city Sergei Sobyanin said, according to France Presse. According to the
    Russian defence ministry, a drone was shot down and 2 others were neutralized but
    crashed into a building compound. This was the latest in a string of attacks
    that Moscow blames on Kyiv, while also claiming the US and their NATO allies
    have provided assistance to Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian authorities say
    at least 2 were killed and 1 wounded in a Russian missile attack on the city of
    Zaporizhzhia.


    SPORTS Romania finished 4th
    at the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival in Maribor (Slovenia), with 9
    gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals. This is the best performance for Romania in
    this competition, after the ones in 1995 (Bath) and 2003 (Paris), when it came
    out 3rd. On Saturday, the last day of the event, Romania won 2 gold medals,
    thanks to Alin Şavlovschi, in the men’s 2,000 m hurdles race and Bianca Maria
    Tiţa, Ştefania Balint, Maria Denisa Capotă and Alexandra Ştefania Uţă, who won
    the women’s relay race with a new competition record (2’06”13). Romania’s
    women’s handball team won the silver after losing the final to France, 32-27. Three other
    medals were won in the tennis competition, by Giulia Safina Popa in the women’s
    singles, Giulia Popa and Alexia Tatu in women’s doubles and Yannick Theodor
    Nicolas Alexandrescou/Alejandro Mateo Berge Vega Nourescu in the men’s doubles.
    In the gymnastics competition, Alexia Gabriela Vânoagă won the silver in the
    beam final. Romania participated in the Festival with a team of 92 athletes. (AMP)

    Gaz –
    Les Roumains auront sans aucune doute accès au gaz, y compris en cas de saison
    froide avec des températures plus basses que l’année dernière, étant donné que
    l’Azerbaïdjan a garanti à la Roumanie une quantité de gaz allant jusqu’à un
    milliard de mètres cubes utilisable en cas de besoin. C’est ce qu’a
    déclaré le ministre de l’énergie, Sebastian Burduja, qui a rencontré à Bucarest
    son homologue azéri, E.S. Parviz Shahbazov. « Le taux de remplissage des
    dépôts roumains a dépassé les 75,5%, de beaucoup supérieur à l’engagement de la
    Roumanie envers l’Union Européenne et
    par rapport à la même période de 2022, la quantité stockée est supérieure de
    700 millions de mètres cubes. », a écrit le ministre jeudi sur un réseau
    de partage. Il a souligné avoir parlé au ministre azéri du développement du
    partenariat stratégique, des investissements bilatéraux et des projets communs
    dans le domaine de l’énergie, y compris le corridor vert qui reliera la mer
    Caspienne à la mer Noire. « La collaboration entre la Roumanie et l’Azerbaïdjan
    dans le domaine est bénéfique non seulement aux deux pays, mais aussi à la
    sécurité de toute l’Europe, a précisé Sebastian Burduja.

    Iohannis – A Bucarest, le président roumain Klaus Iohannis affirme que les systèmes d’alerte sur les phénomènes météorologiques extrêmes devraient être développés constamment, soulignant qu’il est particulièrement important de tenir compte des alertes météorologiques afin d’éviter que des tragédies se produisent. Sur les réseaux sociaux, le président roumain explique que durant cette période, la Roumanie et l’Europe ressentent intensément les effets des changements climatiques, par de violentes tempêtes, des vagues de chaleur et des incendies de végétation amplifiées par des températures inhabituellement élevées. « Nous sommes les témoins des phénomènes météo à impact majeur sur le bien-être, la santé et même ma vie des citoyens », a écrit Klaus Iohannis.

    Pompiers – En Grèce, 40 sapeurs-pompiers roumains sont redéployés aujourd’hui de la région d’Attique sur l’île de Rhodes, fortement touchée par les feux de végétation, selon l’inspection générales des situations d’urgence de Roumanie. Ils se déplacent par ferry et sont dotés de plusieurs véhicules spécialisées. Le ministère des AE de Bucarest fait savoir que le risque d’incendie demeure élevé et l’alerte est toujours de 4 à 5 sur une échelle de 0 à 5 sur plusieurs régions et îles de la Grèce, alors que la météo change d’une manière significative, les températures devraient chuter et des tempêtes puissantes toucheront les région de Thrace, Macédoine, Chalcidique et le nord-est de la mer Egée. Les ressortissants roumains qui souhaitent voyager durant cette période en Grèce sont exhortés de s’informer rigoureusement avant de partir sur la situation sur le terrain, et ceux qui se trouvent déjà dans les zones touchées, sont tenus de respecter strictement les instructions des autorités locales et de suivre des sources officielles d’information.

    Moldova – La Fédération de Russie sera obligée de réduire le nombre du personnel diplomatique et des fonctionnaires qui travaillent dans l’ambassade de Chisinau conformément à une décision des autorités de la République de Moldova et déjà communiquée à l’ambassadeur de Russie. Il s’agit d’une réduction de 84 à 25 postes, dont 10 diplomates et 15 membres du personnel technique, soit un nombre égal à celui des diplomates et du personnel qui travaille à l’ambassade de République de Moldova à Moscou. Le ministre des Affaires Etrangères, Nicu Popescu a rappelé que pendant des décennies la République de Moldova a été la cible d’activités et de politiques hostiles de la part de la Fédération de Russie et nombre des démarches de l’ambassade ont visé à déstabiliser l’Etat. A Moscou, la porte-parole du ministère des Affaires Etrangères russe, Maria Zakharova a affirmé que la décision n’était pas justifiée et qu’il ne s’agissait que d’un nouveau pas du pouvoir de Chisinau vers la destruction des relations bilatérales.

    Belgique – Le ministère des Affaires Etrangères de Bucarest annonce les ressortissants roumains qui se trouvent, transitent ou envisagent de voyager en Belgique qu’une grève des pilotes de la filiale Ryanair de ce pays aura lieu les 29 et 30 juillet. Les vols de cette compagnie aérienne seront perturbés, y compris plusieurs liaisons avec la Roumanie. Selon le ministère des Affaires Etrangères de Bucarest, les ressortissants roumains peuvent demander l’assistance consulaire aux numéros de l’ambassade de Roumanie à Bruxelles : +32 (0) 2 347 5338, +32 (0) 2 344 1658, +32 (0)2 343 69 35, où une permanence a été mise en place.     Concert – UN concert inédit de violon et de guitare aura lieu en fin de semaine à une altitude de plus de 2 000 mètres, dans les monts de Bucegi, dans le centre la Roumanie, près du chalet de Caraiman que le connu violoniste roumain, Alexandru Tomescu a transformé pour la dédier à la musique classique. Aujourd’hui c’est la première édition du master class appelé « Enescu experience ». Huit jeunes musiciens se sont qualifiés suite à une sélection et seront guidés en cette période par Alexandru Tomescu, soliste de l’orchestre de la Radiodiffusion roumaine et par le guitariste Dragoş Ilie. Les deux musiciens consacrés aux côtés des jeunes artistes donneront un concert à la fin du master classe, ce samedi le 29 juillet sur la plate-forme devant le chalet de Caraiman. L’accès du public est gratuit.

    Police – Le ministre roumain de l’intérieur, Cătălin Predoiu, a rencontré des représentants de la direction de la police roumaine et de la police aux frontières, pour leur demander de consolider les actions de lutte contre la criminalité organisée, soulignant le besoin d’une riposte efficace aux groupes criminels – fait savoir ce jeudi le Ministère de l’Intérieur, dans un communiqué. Le ministre a loué l’activité des deux institutions et a insisté sur le renforcement des efforts visant à faire augmenter le degré de sécurité des citoyens.

    Météo – Après une vague de chaleur caniculaire en Roumanie, les températures ont chuté dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi. Hier les maxima frôlaient les 40 degrés, aujourd’hui elles vont de 19 à 28 degrés. 25 degrés en ce moment à Bucarest. Il pleut à Bucarest et des pluies sont présentes sur l’est, le sud-est et le sud. Les tempêtes ont malheureusement fait des victimes.

    Sports – Les sportifs roumains, Constantin Popovici et Cătălin Petru Preda ont remporté les premières médailles d’or et d’argent pour la délégation de Roumanie aux Championnats du monde 2023 de natation de Fukuoka au Japon, après avoir remporté aujourd’hui les deux première places au concours de plongeon. Popovici, 34 ans, est désormais le premier champion du monde de Roumanie au plongeon. 23 sportifs ont participé à ce concours.
