    Romanian men’s basketball team U-BT Cluj-Napoca this past Wednesday in a EuroCup Group B fixture grabbed a 88-77 away win against Italian opponents Umana Reyer Venezia. U-BT Cluj Napoca’s US player Zavier Simpson was the team’s most efficient player, with 25 points, 6 recoveries and 7 assists. Holders U-BT Cluj-Napoca are 5th-placed according to Group B rankings. This coming Tuesday they will take on Turk Telekom, at home.

    Also on Wednesday, in a FIBA Europe Cup match, Group M, CSM CSU Oradea sustained a heart-throbbing 86-87 away defeat by French team Dijon, after extra time. CSM CSU’s Romanian international player Kris Richard was the most efficient scorer, with 27 points, 6 recoveries and 4 assists. Romanian vice-champions have sustained the third defeat in a row and now will have to win all the pending matches if they want to maintain their chances to gain a place in the quarterfinals. On January 29th, CSM play a home game against PAOK Thessalonica.

    In men’s volleyball, CSM Corona Brasov sustained a 1-3 defeat by Italian opponents Trentino Itas. The fixture was held this past Wednesday and counted towards the first leg as part of CEV Cup’s playoffs. European champions Trentino Itas secured their win after one hour and 42 minutes of play. The second leg is scheduled on January 30 in Trento.

    In news from tennis, as part of the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, Victor Cornea and Mariano Navone have advanced to the second round of the men’s doubles event. In the inaugural round this past Thursday, the Romanian-Argentinean pair defeated the pair made of Christian Harrison of the USA and David Pel of the Low Countries, 6-4, 7-6.

    Cornea and Navone have thus secured a cheque worth 58, 000 AUD and were granted ATP 90 points according to the doubles’ rankings. In the second round, Cornea and Navone are in for a daunting task in the match against the all-German pair made of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, fourth-seeded at the Australian Open.

    In women’s volleyball, on Wednesday CSO Voluntari sustained a 1-3 defeat by German side Allianz Stuttgart, in a a Group E Champions League fixture. In the group’s other game, Italian side Savino Del Bene Scandicci defeated Polish opponents Bielsko-Biala, 3-nil. Scandicci are at the top of the table, with 9 points. With three points each, the other teams in the group follow suit. CSO Voluntari’s next scheduled fixture is the game against Bielsko-Biala on December 11, away.

    In the first leg as part of the Challenge Cup’s round of 16, CSM Târgovişte a grabbed a 3-2 away with against Slovenia’s Nova Gorica.The secon-leg match is scheduled on December 11 in Targoviste. Also in the Challenge Cup, this past Tuesday Lugoj Municipal Sports Club sustained a nil-3 defeat by Greek opponents Olympiakos Piraeus, also in the round of 16’s first leg. The return leg of the tie is scheduled on December 11 in Lugoj.

    In EuroCup Women, women’s basketball competition, CSM CSU Constanţa this past Wednesday wasted the opportunity to advance to the round of 32. In Group F’s last round CSM CSU Constanta were defeated by Belgian opponents Castors Braine, 74-78, and now depend on the other results in the competition.

    Advancing to the round of 32 are the first two teams in each group and the best 3rd-placed four teams, but also the four teams that have been 4th-placed in the women’s Euro league.

    In the National ice hockey Championship, Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc and ACSH Gheorgheni have both won their home confrontations. Sport Club secured a 4-3 win against Fenestela 68, while ACSH Gheorgheni secured their win against defending champions Corona Braşov, also 4-3. For Corona, it was their first defeat in the domestic championship’s ongoing edition.

    CSO Voluntari women’s volleyball team on Wednesday grabbed a major away win in The Champions league, defeating Rabotnicki Skopje of North Macedonia, 3-nil. The fixture counted towards the first leg of the competition’s third round. The second leg is scheduled on October 9 in Mioveni. Should they secure a win in the double-legged tie against Rabotnicki, CSO Voluntari will be included in the League’s group E, jointly with Italy’s Scandicci, Polish side Bielsko-Biala and German team Stuttgart.

    In women’s basketball, US Romanian-born player Sabrina Ionescu yet again compelled recognition thanks to her most recent performance. Ionescu’s presence was crucial for New York Liberty, the team that secured an 88-84 win against Las Vegas Aces, in WNBA, the North-American professional women’s basketball league. In the last quarter of the match, Ionescu scored and provided most of the assists, so much so that Liberty had a 2-nil aggregate lead in the semi-final against Aces. New York Liberty are one win away from qualifying to the final.

    In men’s basketball, in EuroCup, on Wednesday U-BT Cluj-Napoca sustained a 73-84 away defeat by French opponents Bourg-en-Bresse, in a match counting towards EuroCup’s Group B. For holders U-BT Cluj Napoca, it was the second defeat in a row, in EuroCup’s ongoing season. In the third round on October 9, U-BT Cluj-Napoca will play a home game against Spanish side Valencia Basket.

    In the fifth round of the National League, on Wednesday, women’s handball team CSM Bucharest defeated Gloria Bistriţa-Năsăud. 33-30, in a match hosted by the Multi-Purpose Sports Hall in Bucharest. Holders CSM took their revenge as on September 7 in Bistritsa, the local side Gloria, defeated CSM, 30-26, in a fixture counting towards the Champions League’s first round. CSM’s top scorer was Cristina Neagu, with 7 goals. Bistritsa’ top scorer was Russian handballer Valeria Kyrdyasheva, with six goals scored. Also on Wednesday, vice-champions Rapid Bucharest defeated Handball Club Zalău, 32-29, while Râmnicu Vâlcea Municipal Sport Club trounced Măgura Cisnădie, 32-21.

    NOMINEE The Romanian Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, leader of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD), was officially nominated as the PSD candidate for the upcoming presidential election during a PSD congress held in Bucharest yesterday. He was also reconfirmed as president of the Political-Parliamentarian formation, which is presently co-ruling Romania. In a speech delivered at the event, Ciolacu presented the programme with which he wants to win the highest position in Romania. The country’s industry, agriculture and public services are the main axes of his strategy. According to him, the Social-Democrats have managed to win the trust of the Romanians through unity, and he proposes a new type of president, ‘a president for all’. Most of the PSD members who took the floor during the Congress lashed out at their partners in the coalition that is presently ruling Romania and made ironical statements against the country’s incumbent president Klaus Iohannis. The Social-Democrats haven’t won the presidential election since the year 2000. The first round of the presidential ballot is due on November 24 and the second on December 8.

     

    HEAT Romania is in for its 13th consecutive day of extremely high temperatures. Meteorologists have issued new code yellow and orange alerts for three thirds of the country. Counties in the country’s west and south are bracing up for temperatures of 36-38 degrees Celsius and higher thermal discomfort. A code yellow alert has also been issued for the regions in the north-west, center, north-east and the Black Sea coast where the highs of the day are expected to go up to 36 Celsius. The heat wave persists in the capital city Bucharest, whose citizens are bracing up for temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius. The noon reading in Bucharest was 33.

     

    MEDALS Students from Romania have walked away with four medals from the International Geography Olympiad hosted by the Irish capital Dublin over August 19th and 24th. David Mihai Dumitrescu, from the National College ‘Carol l’ in Craiova, south-western Romania, won gold in Dublin and Ian Mitocaru, from the National College in Iasi became silver medalist. Tudor Olariu from the Iasi-based ‘Costache Negruzzi College’ and Iustin Balan from the ‘Garabet Ibraileanu’ National College in Iasi stepped onto the podium third step. According to the Education Ministry in Bucharest, Romania’s team in Dublin has been coordinated by teachers Mihaela and Dorin Fiscutean of the National College in Iasi.

     

    COAL According to the National Institute for Statistics in Bucharest, Romania’s coal production dropped by 20% in the first six months of the year against the same period of 2023. The country’s coal imports have also dropped by 30%, the same report says. According to the estimates of the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis, this downward trend is likely to continue in the following years as other energy-production facilities will become operational. The EU’s consumption and production of coal last year dropped by 23%, to its lowest level in recorded history, says the EU statistical Office, Eurostat. According to the same sources, the 100 million ton slump in the coal production in a single year is one of the sharpest ever registered in the EU for this type of fuel. With almost two thirds of the entire EU consumption, Germany and Poland were the biggest coal consumers.

     

    VOLLEYBALL The Romanian women’s volleyball side was outperformed 3-0 by Croatia, in its first match of Group G of the preliminaries of the European Championships EuroVolley 2026. The entire game was dominated by the Croatian side, which tops the ranking after having also defeated the selection of Kosovo. Romania will be taking on Kosovo at home on August 29th. Winners of the seven preliminaries groups as well as the best five teams ranking second are to qualify for the final tournament.

    In a Group B fixture counting towards EuroCup mens basketball team, U-BT Cluj-Napoca on Wednesday grabbed a 85-81 away win against German opponents ratiopharm Ulm.




    American-born Romanian player Patrick Richard was U-BT Cluj-Napocas top scorer, with 27 points and 3 assists on the record. Also in Group B, on Tuesday Italian team Trento defeated Polish team Slask Wroclaw, 85-79. On Wednesday Greek team Aris Thessalonica defeated Montenegrin team Buducnost Podgorica, 76-75, then French team Bourg-en-Bresse defeated Lithuanian opponents Lietkabelis Panevezys, 104-71, while Turk Telekom grabbed a 83-73 away win against Spanish team Dreamland Gran Canaria. U-BT Cluj-Napoca are 3rd-placed in Group B and have already booked their ticket for the competitions play-off. This coming Wednesday U-BT Cluj-Napoca play a home game against Italian team Trento.




    In FIBA Europe Cups Group N, CSM CSU Oradea sustained a 98-101 away defeat by German opponents Niners Chemnitz, after extra time. CSM CSU Oradeas top scorer was American-born player Nijal Pearson, with 22 points and 7 assists. With 8 points in 4 games, Niners Chemnitz are at the top of the table in Group N. CSM CSU Oradea follow, with 5 points. 3rd-placed are Low Country team Leiden, while 4th-placed are Varese of Italy, with 4 points in 3 games played The first two teams in descending order qualify to the quarterfinals. CSM CSU Oradea play their last two fixtures in the group at home, against Leiden, on January 24th and Against Varese, on February the 7th.




    In mens volleyball, Arcada Galati sustained a nil-3 away defeat by Lvi Prague of the Czech Republic. Romanian holders Arcada Galati are 4th-placed according to Group Es final rankings. Italys Civitanova are at the top of the table. Second-placed are Lvi Prague, while third-placed are Greenyard Maaseik of Belgium.




    As part of the ongoing Australian Open, tennis tournament, in the first round of the womens doubles, this past Wednesday the Romanian-Brazilian pair made of Monica Niculescu and Ingrid Martins sustained a 3-6, 1-6 defeat by the all-Italian pair made of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini. On Thursday also in the womens doubles and again in the first round, the Romanian-Croatian made of Sorana Cîrstea and Donna Vekic have sustained a 2-6, 5-7 defeat by the 9th-seeded pair made the Dutch Demis Schuurs and Brazils Luisa Stefani.

    Arcada Galaţi saw their first win in the group stage of the mens volleyball Champions League. In the competitions Group E on Thursday, the Romanian champions defeated the Czech side Lvi Prague 3-2, at home. On Tuesday, in the other match in the group, the Italian team Civitanova beat the Belgian side Greenyard Maaseik 3-0, away from home. Civitanova tops the group ranking with 3 wins. In a weeks time, Arcada is scheduled to take on Greenyard Maaseik in Belgium. In the first round of the Challenge Cup eighth-finals, the Romanian mens volleyball team Steaua Bucharest lost to Giesen (Germany) 2-3 away from home. The return leg is scheduled next Thursday in Bucharest.



    The sports club Dinamo Bucharest awarded its best athletes of the year 2023. The top performers for the club this year are the rowers Mădălina Bereş, Amalia Bereş and Maria Lehaci Tivodariu. The 3 members of Romanias Olympic team had identical accomplishments in 2023, specifically 2 gold medals each at the European Championships in Bled, and one gold and one silver medal each at the World Championships in Belgrade.



    This weekend, matches are scheduled counting towards the 20th round of the Romanian football Super League. After 2 matches on Friday, FC Voluntari vs. FC U Craiova and Petrolul Ploieşti vs. Rapid Bucharest, Saturday will see UTA Arad take on Farul Constanţa in Sibiu, Universitatea Craiova play at home against Politehnica Iaşi, and FCSB pitted against Hermannstadt on the National Arena in Bucharest. Two other games are scheduled on Sunday: Oţelul Galaţi take on Universitatea Cluj away from home, and Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe play on home turf against CFR Cluj. The last match of this round takes place on Monday, with FC Botoşani facing Dinamo Bucharest. Top of the Super League standings at present are FCSB, with 38 points, followed by CFR, with 33. (AMP)

    The Romanian Football Cup schedules, this week, new matches from the group stage, namely from the second leg. On Tuesday, in group A, Corvinul Hunedoara, from the second league, defeated, at home, the trophy holder, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, score 1-0, and in Târgovişte, Petrolul Ploiesti defeated Chindia, a team from the second echelon, score 2- 0. On Wednesday, Hermannstadt defeated Progresul Pecica, from the third league, 6-0 away from home. In group B, CSA Steaua Bucharest, from the second league, ended in a nil draw 0-0, with Rapid Bucharest, at home. On Thursday, two more matches will be played: CSM Alexandria against FC Botoşani and the Cluj derby: Universitatea against CFR. In group C, on Tuesday, in Galati, Oţelul ended in a 1-all draw the match with FCSB. On Wednesday, FC U Craiova 1948 won away from home, score 1-0, the match against SCM Zalău, a team from the third echelon. On Thursday, in Oradea, FC Bihor will be up against Dinamo.     Now news from volleyball. Steaua Bucharest qualified for the round of 16 of the Challenge Cup in men’s volleyball. The military team defeated the Luxembourg team Lorentzweiler, score 3-0, on Wednesday, in Bucharest, in the second leg of the preliminary round. Steaua also won away from home, 3-1. The next opponent of the Romanian team will be the Austrian team Ried im Innkreis, the first match being scheduled for November 29, away from home.



    Let’s move on to women’s basketball. The Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe team was defeated at home by the Hungarian team Diósgyőr, with the score 80-68, in the fifth stage of Group A of the Euroleague. The Romanian champions, debuting in the first European echelon, have lost all the matches played in the group so far. Sepsi will play their next match on November 22, away from home, against group leader Fenerbahce Istanbul.



    From men’s basketball, let’s recall that U-BT Cluj-Napoca dramatically defeated the Greek team Aris Thessaloniki away from home, with the score 61-59, in EuroCup, group B. The Romanian champions achieved their fourth victory in the second continental interclub competition. U-BT will play the next match on November 8, at home, against the German team Ulm. (LS)

    Rentrée
    scolaire en Roumanie


    La nouvelle
    année scolaire a débuté ce 11 septembre en Roumanie – une bonne occasion pour
    la presse de passer en revue les défis qui attendent les 3 millions d’élèves et
    leurs enseignants. Cette année scolaire
    compte 36 semaines de cours regroupés en 5 modules. Les deux semaines
    thématiques devenues habituelles -à savoir la Semaine verte et
    l’école autrement ne manqueront pas non plus au programme. Mais
    l’année 2023-2024 est également la première au cours de laquelle la nouvelle
    loi sur l’éducation sera appliquée. De nouveaux cours optionnels sont mis au
    programme et les règles d’attribution des bourses ont été modifiées. Des
    changements concernant les examens nationaux seront progressivement mis en
    place. Quant aux enseignants, ils ont hâte de voir si l’Exécutif tiendra parole
    et si leurs revenus augmenteront comme promis. En mai, ces derniers avaient déclenché
    une grève générale, suite à quoi le gouvernement a accepté d’augmenter leurs
    salaires de 25 % et de leur accorder des primes annuelles. Enfin, cette année,
    en Roumanie, le problème très grave du trafic et de la consommation de drogue
    chez les jeunes a également fait l’objet de discussions. Plusieurs ministres du
    Cabinet ont signé un plan de sécurité scolaire. Cette semaine également, les
    procureurs de la DIICOT ont lancé à Bucarest une vaste opération ciblant les
    trafiquants et les consommateurs de drogue dans l’entourage d’un jeune homme de
    19 ans, VladPascu. Issu d’une famille aisée, il fait l’objet d’une enquête pour
    avoir tué deux jeunes dans un accident de la route le mois dernier en bord de
    mer, après avoir pris le volant alors qu’il avait consommé plusieurs types de
    substances interdites. La tragédie a suscité une vive émotion dans l’opinion
    publique et continue à faire couler beaucoup d’encre.


    La guerre
    aux frontières de la Roumanie


    Des morceaux
    des drones russes ayant servi à attaquer les ports ukrainiens du Danube ont été
    retrouvés sur le territoire roumain. Suite à ces évènements, le ministère de la
    Défense de Bucarest a imposé cette semaine des restrictions de vol
    supplémentaires dans l’espace aérien bordant la frontière avec l’Ukraine, au
    sud et à l’est du pays, entre les villes de Sulina et Galati. Lessurvols en
    avion avec ou sans pilote ne sont pas autorisés, à l’exception des avions
    d’État et des avions de situation d’urgence. D’autre part, l’armée a achevé la
    construction d’abris anti-aériens dans le delta du Danube pour assurer la
    protection des civils contre d’éventuels éclats d’obus et l’onde de choc
    générée par l’éventuel crash d’un drone. Par ailleurs, le ministère des
    Affaires étrangères a informé qu’il consultait les alliés de l’OTAN concernant
    les récents développements à la frontière entre la Roumanie et l’Ukraine. Les
    représentants de l’Alliance ont précisé qu’ils ne disposaient d’aucune
    information indiquant une quelconque attaque intentionnelle de la Russie contre
    le territoire roumain, mais qu’ils continuaient de surveiller la situation. Le
    Premier ministre Marcel Ciolacu a quant à lui voulu rassurer la population.
    D’autre part, il a demandé au ministre de l’Agriculture de créer un mécanisme
    pour protéger les agriculteurs roumains contre les exportations des céréales
    ukrainiennes à des prix défiant toute concurrence. Plus de 360 ​​000
    agriculteurs bénéficieront de ce soutien. Le budget total est d’environ 60
    millions d’euros, issus de fonds européens et du budget national.














    La
    question de l’adhésion de la Roumanie à Schengen remise à l’ordre du jour des
    institutions européennes


    La présidente
    de la Commission européenne, Ursula von der Leyen, a demandé mercredi à
    Strasbourg, dans son discours sur l’état de l’Union, que la Roumanie et la

    européen, Roberta Metsola, avait lancé un appel tout aussi pressant, cette
    fois-ci avec des arguments d’ordre économique : retarder l’entrée dans l’espace
    de libre circulation des personnes et des marchandises occasionne un double
    préjudice pour les Roumains et les Bulgares – cela limite leur droit à la libre
    circulation et génère des coûts supplémentaires pour leur épargne. Maintenir la
    Roumanie en dehors de l’espace Schengen entraînerait des pertes économiques
    pouvant atteindre jusqu’à 2 % du PIB. Certains économistes indépendants ont estiméà
    200 millions d’euros par mois les dégâts causés à la Roumanie.




















    Les
    sportifs roumains dans le monde


    La joueuse de
    tennis roumaine Simona Halep, ancienne numéro 1 mondiale, a été suspendue de
    toutes compétitions pour 4 ans. L’année dernière, lors de l’US Open, elle a été
    testée positive au roxadustat, un médicament utilisé pour traiter l’anémie,
    mais considéré comme un améliorateur de performances. Un tribunal indépendant a
    reconnu que Simona Halep avait consommé un complément nutritionnel contaminé,
    mais a jugé que cela ne pouvait pas expliquer la quantité de roxadustat
    présente dans l’organisme de la joueuse. Le même tribunal a également découvert
    des irrégularités dans le passeport biologique de l’athlète, apparemment dues
    au dopage. Simona Halep a annoncé qu’elle ferait appel de cette décision.

    La Roumanie occupe la 7ème placeau Championnat d’Europe de volleyball masculin,
    son meilleur classement au cours des 42 dernières années. Et aux Championnats
    du monde d’aviron, les Roumains ont remporté 5 médailles – 2 d’or, 1 d’argent
    et 2 de bronze, réussissant également à qualifier 11 équipages pour les Jeux
    Olympiques de l’année prochaine à Paris.

    Romania has been
    outperformed 3-0 by the en-titre Olympic Champions France in Varna, Bulgaria,
    in the quarterfinals of the European Volleyball Championships hosted by Israel,
    Italy, Bulgaria and North Macedonia. France has thus had their revenge after
    Romania’s 3-1 win in the group’s stage.




    Robert Adrian
    Aciobăniţei was Romania’s best scorer with 11 points whereas the best French
    player was Jean Patry with 14 points.


    The
    progress of Romania’s national volleyball side kicked off in group D with two
    defeats 0-3 against Portugal and 2-3 against Israel. The Romanians made a
    strong comeback though and defeated Turkey 3-2 and Greece 3-1.




    They also clinched a surprising 3-1 win against
    France, which ended on the first position in the group’s ranking with 12
    points. France was followed by Portugal with 9, Romania also with 9, Turkey
    with 8, Israel 4 and Greece 3. The first four sides qualified for the round of
    16 where Romania first took on Croatia. Our players secured a 3-2 win against
    Croatia, the side on the second position in Group B. The Romanians were the
    first to get the upper hand 2-0, but the Croatians managed to level the points
    later into the game. However Romania succeeded in winning the last set
    eventually.




    Alexandru Raţă
    scored 30 points for Romania, while Petar Dirlic, 29 for the Croatian side. In
    the final ranking Romania went 7th.


    We recall that at the
    previous edition of the aforementioned competition, hosted by France, Slovenia,
    Belgium, and the Netherlands in 2019, Romania ranked 21st. Romania’s
    prize closet includes a title in 1963, two silver medals in 1955 and 1958 and
    two bronze in 1971 and 1977.

    School — The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced that the issue of drug consumption among young people will be included on the agenda of the next meeting of the country’s Supreme Council of National Defense. Attending today the opening of the new pre-university year at a school in Bucharest, he has emphasized that this phenomenon represents a serious challenge to national security. Klaus Iohannis has also said that he continues to support the increase in teachers salaries as of January 1, 2024. He has given assurances that he remains firm and will support all measures to make the commitments made by the Government this summer come true. The new school year started, today, in Romania, for approximately 3 million pupils and preschoolers. It will have 36 weeks of courses, and it is organized in five modules, just like the previous one. “The Green Week” and “Doing School Differently” will take place between September 11, 2023 – April 26, 2024 and can be set by schools in any of modules 1, 2, 3 or 4, in intervals of 5 consecutive working days. The school year will end on June 21, 2024. The pupils entering the 5th grade will be the first to take an additional high school entrance exam in the summer of 2027.



    Drone — The Romanian Defense Ministry announced that the presence of drone fragments in a different area than those investigated previously was not confirmed. The armed forces remain on alert and will continue investigations in the areas of the national territory located in the vicinity of the areas where the Russians are carrying out attacks on the Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube, the Defense Ministry announced on Sunday. Nach mehr als zwei Stunden Spielzeit konnten die Rumänen die Partie gewinnen, bei der sie Schwankungen in ihrer Form und Widerstandsfähigkeit zeigten. Bukarest trifft im Halbfinale am 11. September auf den derzeitigen Europameister Frankreich. Die rumänische Volleyball-Nationalmannschaft war seit 40 Jahren nicht mehr unter den besten acht Mannschaften des Kontinents. Vom 28. August bis zum 16. September findet die europäische Meisterschaft in Israel, Italien, Bulgarien und Nordmazedonien statt. Die rumänische Volleyball-Nationalmannschaft belegte bei ihrer letzten Teilnahme im Jahr 2019 den 21. Platz. Die Bilanz der rumänischen Volleyball-Nationalmannschaft besteht aus einem Europameistertitel, zwei Silbermedaillen und zwei Bronzemedaillen.

    Romania’s men’s volleyball team
    concluded Group D of the European Championships in Tel Aviv – Yafo, Israel, with
    a clear victory against defending Olympic champions France. The 3-1 win (25-23,
    16-25, 25-18, 25-21) secured Romania its qualification in the eighth-finals.




    The best Romanian players were
    Adrian Aciobăniţei, currently playing for the Polish side Skra Belchatow, who
    scored 20 points, Alexandru Raţă with 12 points and Robert Călin with 11 points.
    On the French side, the best players were Stephen Boyer with 19 points scored,
    Yacine Louati with 15 and Kevin Tillie with 11.




    Romania had started the
    competition with 2 matches lost, 0-3 to Portugal and 2-3 to Israel. But the
    Romanian team made a strong come-back in the second part of the group stage and
    won their last 3 matches, 3-2 against Turkey, 3-1 against Greece and 3-1 against
    France.




    In the last 2 matches of the
    group, Turkey defeated Israel, 3-0 and France beat Greece 3-0. In the final
    group D standing, France ranks first with 12 points, followed by Portugal with 9,
    Romania also 9, Turkey with 8 points, Israel (4 points) and Greece (3 points). The
    top 4 teams in the group qualify in the eighth-finals.




    Romania will take on Croatia, the

    Gold, silver and bronze for Romania at the World Kayak-canoe Championships. In Duisburg, Germany, athletes from Romania stepped onto the podium three times. On Friday, Catalin Chirila became gold medalist in the single canoe race of 500 meters. On Saturday, he reaped silver in the Olympic 1,000 meter race and also qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris next year. The best Romanian performance in this event happened in 1963, when our players became bronze medalists on their own ground.


    Lets have a look at the latest from womens handball. CSM Bucharest won Romanias Supercup after a 31-22 win against Rapid Bucharest on Sunday. Cristina Neagu scored most of the goals for CSM, six. In the Supercups second final, Dunarea Braila outperformed CSM Targu Jiu 35-33.


    US Open, the years last Grand Slam tournament, kicks off at Flushing Meadows with five Romanian players on the main draw. Among them Elena Gabriela Ruse, who qualified after a 7-6, 6-3 win against Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. The others are Sorana Cirstea, Irina Begu, Ana Bogdan and Patricia Tig.


    Last weekend saw the football games counting towards the seventh leg of Romanias Superleague. On Friday in Galati, local side Otelul and FC Voluntari ended their game in a draw, 2-all. On Sunday in Ovidiu, southern Romania, local side Farul Constanţa obtained a 2-0 against Universitatea Craiova.

    Romania’s national football side on Friday takes on the selection of
    Kosovo in an away game counting towards the Group 1 of the Euro 2024
    qualifiers. On June 19, the Romanian footballers will be up against Switzerland
    in the same group.




    This weekend the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, is hosting the European
    Fencing Championships right ahead the upcoming European Games in Poland.


    The competition in Plovdiv is important because athletes here can get
    points, which will enable them to qualify for the Olympics of 2024, whereas the
    European Games bring points only to the national teams. Romania is being
    represented by its male and female fencers in several contests such as saber,
    epee and foil.




    In
    the Group B of the Golden League competition in women’s volleyball, the
    Romanian national side will be taking on Slovakia in an away match. The Czech
    Republic tops the group with 9 points, followed by Romania and Slovakia each
    with three points. The first side in the group qualifies for the Final Four
    tournament, as well as the best of the runners up. In a runners-up ranking
    Romania is third after Sweden and France.




    In a
    game held on Wednesday in Brasov, central Romania, the country’s male
    volleyball side obtained its second win in group A of the Golden League,
    against Denmark, 3-1. Alexandru Rata proved to be the best Romanian player on
    the ground with 22 points scored. In the same group, Turkey outperformed
    Portugal 3-1. Romania will be up against Portugal on June 18, also in Brasov,
    while Turkey will receive the visit of Denmark on Saturday. Turkey tops the
    ranking with 8 points followed by Portugal with 7, Denmark with 6 and Romania
    also with 6. The groups’ winners and the organizers will qualify for the Final
