    We begin with news from womens volleyball. In the first leg as part of the CEV womens volleyball cup final this past Wednesday in Targu Mures, Volei Alba Blaj sustained a 1-3 defeat by Italian opponents Scandicci. The return leg is scheduled this coming Wednesday in Florence. For Voli Alba Blaj, the fixture is the fourth European final they have played in the last six years. CSM has played the final confrontation in all European interclub competitions: in the Champions league, in 2018, in the CEV Cup, in 2019 and in the Challenge Cup, in 2021



    Romanian tennis player Irina Begu has advanced to the round of 18 of the IWTA 500 tournament in Charleston, the USA, an event with 780, 637 USD in prize money. In the tournaments round of 32, this past Wednesday Begu defeated US challenger Sofia Kenin, 6-1, 6-4. Begu will be given a cheque worth 9,340 USD and will be granted 55 WTA points. In the round of 18, Irina Begu takes on the tournaments top-seeded tennis player, Jessica Pegula, also from the US.



    In the debut day of the World Swimming Championships held in Otopnei, the many-time world champion David Popovici on Wednesday won gold in the 50m freestyle event and thin the 100m backstroke event, The competition draws to a close on Sunday. The worlds best swimmer at the moment, Popovici, will also compete in the 50m backstroke event, the 50m butterfly event and in the 100m freestyle event. David Popovici will also compete in the 400m freestyle event and in some of relay events.



    Romanian Cup in footballs quarterfinal fixtures are played this week. On Tuesday, UTA Arad grabbed a 1-nil home win against FC U Craiova. On Wednesday, Universitatea Cluj secured a 2 – 1 away win against FC Hermannstadt of Sibiu. The two winning sides will play each other in the semi-finals, on April 26. The last two quarterfinal fixtures are scheduled on Thursday: Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe take on Mioveni, while CFR Cluj play FC Argeş.

In the next round, she will take on no 4 in the world, Caroline Garcia, of France, whom she defeated last week in the Indian Wells eighth-finals, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Also on Wednesday, Ana Bogdan lost to the US player Robin Montgomery, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.



    In the first leg of the playoffs for the mens handball Champions League quarter-finals, Dinamo Bucharest played at home against the German side THW Kiel. The guests won, 41 – 28, the harshest defeat for the Romanian champions this season. The second leg is scheduled next Wednesday in Kiel. The qualifying team will be facing the French side Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.



    CSM Lugoj lost the second leg of the womens volleyball Challenge Cup final, against the Italian side Chieri. The Italians won in Timisoara on Wednesday, 3-0, the same score reported at the end of the first leg in Turin as well. CSM Lugoj was the 3rd Romanian team to reach the finals of the Challenge Cup, after CSM Bucharest, which won the trophy in 2016, and Volei Alba Blaj, which lost the final in 2021. For CSM Lugoj, this was the best season in history, the Challenge Cup final adding to their winning the Romanian Cup Winners Cup.



    We wrap up today with basketball. U-BT Cluj-Napoca Wednesday lost at home to Ukraines Prometey Slobojanske, 96-87, in the last match at home in the EuroCup Group A. Irrespective of the result of the last match, against the German side Ulm, the Romanian champions will remain 9th in the group, and only the top 8 teams in each group qualify into the round of 16. On Wednesday CSM Lugoj succeeded a 3-1 win against Belgium’s Asterix Avo Beveren. The fixture counted towards the second leg of the quarterfinals. We recall CSM Lugoj had also won the first leg, away from home, 3-2.



    In news from tennis, Romanian Monica Niculescu and Japan’s Miyu Kato on Wednesday have advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Dubai, an event with 780,000 USD in prize money. In the round of 16, Niculescu and Kato defeated Norwegian-Chilean pair made of Ulrikke Eikeri and Alexa Guarachi, 6-2, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Niculescu and Kato go against 4th-seeded pair made of China’s Zhaoxuan Yang and Russian Vera Zvonareva.



    CSM Oradea water polo team has been eliminated from the LEN Euro Cup European competition by Greek opponents Panionios. In the quarterfinals’ return leg, on Wednesday CSM Oradea grabbed a 13-8 home win, coming from behind as in the first leg in Athens, CSM sustained a a 5-10 defeat. In the penalty shootout, Panionios succeeded seven goals, while CSM Oradea, six.



    In the Champions League in men’s handball, in a Group A fixture, this past Wednesday FC Porto grabbed a 32-23 home win against Dinamo Bucharest. For holders Dinamo, it was the most serious defeat in the ongoing season, at the hands of bottom-of-the-table team FC Porto, who have thus succeeded their first win in the League’s group stage. Also on Wednesday, Danish team Gudme grabbed a 37-36 away win against Hungarian team Veszprem. In Croatia, French team Paris Saint Germain defeated PPD Zagreb, 33-30. This coming Thursday, Dinamo play Paris Saint-Germain, away from home. Three rounds ahead of the end of the League’s group stage, Dinamo Bucharest are 5th-placed in the rankings. Playing straight in the Champions League’s quarterfinals are the 1st and 2nd-placed teams in Groups A and B. 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th-placed teams compete in the playoffs, according to a round-robin system.     table tennis team this past Wednesday in Bucharest’s Multi-purpose Sports Hall grabbed
    a 3-nil win against Slovenia. It was the national team’s last scheduled A6 Group
    fixture as part of the European Teams Championships’ preliminaries. In the
    competition’s group stage, Romania grabbed four wins, two against Slovenia and two against Ukraine. Both fixtures were played in Bucharest.


    The Romanian national women’s
    table tennis team have already secured their qualification to the European Championships’
    final tournament. Also on Wednesday, the women’s national team defeated
    Hungary, 3-nil. It was our team’s last scheduled A1 Group fixture as part of

    first leg they played in Lyon, 76-91. In Group L as part of the FIBA Europe Cup’s
    men’s version, CSM CSU Oradea sustained a 66-74 away defeat by Polish
    opponents Anwil Wloclawek. For CSM CSU Oradea, it was the third consecutive
    defeat; notwithstanding, the Romanians still have a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. With
    9 points, Wloclawek are at the top of the table, followed
    by Brose Bamberg of Germany, with 8, CSM CSU Oradea, with 7 and Cypriot team Keravnos,
    with 6. In Group I, SCM ”U” Craiova a sustained a 64-71 home defeat by French
    team Cholet Basket. First-timers in the European cups, SCM ”U” Craiova sustained
    their fifth consecutive defeat in the second round as part of the group stage.
    SCM U Craiova are the bottom-of-the-table team according to the group rankings.

    Lithuanian side Lietkabelis 78-69. U-BT ranks eighth in the group which has 10
    sides. The first 8 sides in the group are qualified for the competition’s eighth
    finals.

    the runner-up team and their next scheduled match is this coming Wednesday’s
    confrontation against Vero Volley Milan.


    A first-timer in the Champions League, CSM
    Târgovişte have succeeded their first group win as part of the the competition.
    In a Group E fixture on Wednesday, CSM Targoviste grabbed a 3-nil away win against
    Bulgarian opponents Maritza Plovdiv. With three wins so far, Turkey’s Eczacibaşi
    Istanbul are at the top of the table, followed by Polish team Chemik Police,
    with two wins. 3rd-placed are CSM Târgovişte and their next scheduled fixture

    In men’s volleyball, in a fixture counting

    nil-3 home defeat by Italian opponents Piacenza. In the first leg as part of the Challenge Cup’s quarterfinals, Steaua
    Bucharest sustained a 1-3 away defeat by Olympiakos Piraeus.
    The second leg is scheduled on January 26 in Bucharest.


    In men’s basketball, this past Wednesday
    holders U-BT Cluj-Napoca sustained a 79-88 home defeat by French opponents Bourg-en-Bresse,
    in a fixture counting towards EuroCup’s Group A. After 10 games played, U-BT
    Cluj-Napoca are 9th-placed in the group, the last-but-one-position,
    with 3 wins and 7 defeats on their record sheet. U-BT Cluj-Napoca this coming
    Wednesday take on bottom-of-the-table opponents, Slovenia’s Olimpija Ljubljana,
    away from home.


    In a Group L fixture as part of FIBA Europe
    Cup, in Nicosia, CSM CSU Oradea sustained a 75-77 defeat by Cypriot team Keravnos.
    In was CSM CSU Oradea’s second consecutive defeat, in the wake of their debut fixture
    group win. CSM CSU Oradea are the bottom-of-the-table team in the group. Their next scheduled game is the home match
    against German opponents Brose Bamberg.


    In news from football, holders CFR Cluj
    this past Wednesday, in Spain’s Oliva Nova, drew against second-tier German team
    Holstein Kiel, 1-all. In their second match as part of CFR’s training stage in
    Spain, on Friday, they will go against another second-tier German team, Darmstadt.(EN)

    Championships (25 m) in Melbourne, the Romanian swimmer David Popovici came out
    4th in the 100m freestyle final with 45.64, a new world junior record.
    First came the Australian athlete Kyle Chalmers. David Popovici is the
    defending 100m freestyle world champion and holder of the world record in this
    event.




    In men’s basketball, on Wednesday in Riga, Latvia, the
    Romanian side U-BT Cluj-Napoca was defeated by the Ukrainian team Prometey
    Slobozhanske 105-82, in the EuroCup Group A. After 8 games, the Romanian
    champions are ranking 8th, with 6 points. In the FIBA Europe Cup,
    CSM Oradea beat the German side Bamberg on home turf, 82 – 80, in the first
    match in Group L. In Group I of the same competition, SCM Craiova was defeated
    at home by FC Porto, 83-73. Also worth noting is that the women’s team Baschet
    Club Arad ended its participation in the EuroCup with a defeat. The Romanian

    Italian side Piacenza, which in the round of 16 defeated Fenerbahce Istanbul, 3-1
    in both legs.




    In women’s volleyball, on Wednesday, in the first leg
    of the round of 32 of the CEV Cup, CSO Voluntari lost in Poland to Budowlani
    Lodz, 3-0. In the Challenge Cup, also in the round of 32, the first leg, CSM Lugoj lost a dramatic match away from
    home to PTT Ankara, 3-2.




    On Wednesday, in a game counting towards round 20 of
    the Romanian football SuperLeague, Rapid București beat Petrolul Ploiești on
    the National Arena in Bucharest, 3-1. Two of Rapid’s goals were scored by the
    Croatian player Marko Duganzic, and one by Ștefan Pănoiu, in overtime. Gheorghe
    Grozav scored for the Ploiesti side. Top of the ranking at present is Farul

    Romanian mens handball team Dinamo Bucharest on Wednesday won its first game as part of this years edition of the Champions League. In the Multi-purpose Sports Hall in Bucharest, Dinamo outclassed FC Porto, 32 to 27. The fixture counted towards the fourth leg of the Leagues group stage. Dynamos top scorer was their Egyptian handballer Ali Zein, cu 10 goals scored. According to the as-it-stands table, Dinamo are 5th-placed in Group A, with 3 points, in the wake of a win, a draw and two defeats. Dinamos next scheduled game on October 26, against Paris Saint-Germain, will also be on home court.



    In mens volleyball, Arcada Galaţi secured a 3-nil away win against Bulgarian opponents Hebar Pazardjik, on Wednesday. The match counted towards the first leg of the Champions Leagues second preliminary round. It only took Arcada Galati one hour and 26 minutes of play to defeat Hebar Pazardjik, a team that in 2021 played in the Leagues group stage. Arcada Galati are the favorites to advancing to the Leagues third round, provided they also defeat Hebar Pazardjik in Galati, on October 12. Should they win, Arcada go against the winner of the confrontation pitting Croatias Mladost Zagreb against Lindaren Volley Amriswil of Switzerland. The winner will be competing in the Leagues Group B, alongside Germanys Berlin Recycling, din Germania, Warta Zawiercie of Poland and Halkbank Ankara of Turkey.



    This past Wednesday, in a confrontation counting towards the round of 16 as part of the World teams Championships in Chengdu, China Romanian womens table tennis team sustained a 2-3 defeat by the team of Hong Kong. In the first match, Bernadette Szőcs was defeated by Chengzhu Zhu, 2-3, having had a 2-1 lead in sets. Then Elizabeta Samara sustained a 1-3 defeat in the game against Hoi Kem Doo. Adina Diaconu secured the Romanian teams first win, outclassing Ho Ching Lee, 3-1. Bernadette Szőcs levelled the score defeating Hoi Kem Doo, 3-1. However, in the last fixture, Salara lost to Chengzhu Zhu, 2 -3, after a 1-nil and a 2-1 lead in sets.(EN)
