On Saturday, March 13, an art gallery in downtown Bucharest opened a show entitled “mud&butterflies,” the second personal show by artist Chioma Ebinama with the Catinca Tăbăcaru gallery and her first ever exhibition in Romania.

    mud&butterflies

Born in 1888, Chioma Ebinama is a Nigerian-American artist whose work delves into mythology, animism, and pre-Colonial philosophy. In 2018 she had her first personal show with Romanian-born US-resident Catinca Tăbăcarus Gallery in New York City, followed by shows with Boys Quarters Project Space in Port Harcourt, Nigeria (2019), Fortnight Institute in New York (2020), and The Breeder in Athens (2020). For this year she has several solo projects with Catinca Tăbăcaru in Bucharest, Maureen Paley in London and the Haute-Vienne Contemporary Art Museum in France.

The “mud&butterflies” exhibition will be opened in Bucharest until April 24.

“I really enjoyed listening to this program! It was the first program Ive listened to for an extended period of time on my new radio. I would have enjoyed more biographical information about the traditional music singer Sofia Vicoveanca – the music was very interesting and enjoyable.

“Hi RRI, My friends in Bucharest I hope all is well. Transmission received here in Cardiff at 17.00 hours on a frequency of 11.810 Khz that come in with a good signal for this time of the evening. Some slight fading during broadcast. I heard a very Interesting world of culture as well as Radio Romania’s Encyclopaedia that always educates me from your country. Next All that Jazz, a genre that you know I am very passionate about, as I love the smooth stuff, good cymbal work on the ride cymbal In the opening which I very much enjoyed to listen to. After which was DX mail bag informing us the listeners of the changes to your winter frequencies that I will be programming into my radio. Loving the news and information from Romania; you make it work, you have an extremely skilled team and the more I listen the more that I learn. To you all in the English section that makes it all happen, all the best from a very cloudy Cardiff. Will be in touch soon. P.S. thank you for the QSL and the coat of arms of Bucharest which you might like to know is on my fridge on display!

“Hi all at RRI, Reception has been very good throughout the month of September. As per usual there have been many enjoyable features in the past month’s programmes, and I enjoyed today’s show very much, especially the ‘Traveller’s Guide’ feature about the Iron Gate Museum, and the piece that featured the school which was rediscovering traditional crafts, something which is always a worthy aim. Thank you also for the most recent QSL card that you sent me, these always have interesting photographs on them, but it would also be nice to see one with a shot of the RRI presenters on the front of it one day. 🙂

“Dear RRI! Dear friends! I hope you are all well, now the summer high temperatures are over. I wonder how the harvest has been all over Romania with this unusual summer. Being born and raised on a farm I am always thinking about the farmers, also realizing, that we get all our food from the countryside. Right now we are picking pears and apples, so that we have for most of the winter. Last winter our apples lasted until beginning of May. I am writing you ahead of the football match: Romania-Denmark on Sunday. I will off course be watching the match on TV. If Denmark wins, we will be playing as number 2 in the group with another number 2 from another group, in order to go to Russia next summer. May the best team win and give us an exciting match with a lot of goals – all those 0-0 and 1-0 matches are boring. Best and warmest wishes!

“Hi there, My name is Ian Sampson. I am writing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I tuned into your English language program at 0:45 UTC, October 3, 2017 on 9370 KHZ. It was an interesting discussion on duels in Romania and how some people insisted it is adopted and not originally part of Romanian culture. The program continued to discuss how Romanian duels had less deaths then other nations because they generally ended when blood was drawn. Finally it ended exploring how the legal system was lenient on deaths caused by duel. Please keep up the great English language programs!

“I was very pleased to pick up your broadcast from my location in Chicago, IL, USA. It is not often that I receive a strong signal from your station but it seems that on this particular night, your broadcast reached quite far. Thank you for continuing to work in the shortwave medium. I look forward to hearing you more and will try and listen in. Sending you peace and thankfulness from Chicago.

“I enjoyed the show on November 22, RRI has great programming and is an authoritative source of news and culture on Europe. I look forward to hearing Christmas music on RRI. Thanks for your support of shortwave!

“Its hard to believe that another year has passed. We are all busy trying to wrap up things at our office. According to the latest weather forecast we will have unseasonably warm weather this winter. Christmas is my favourite time of year. Every street is decorated and business picks up. My family is not Christian but we enjoy spending Christmas together. White Christmas is romantic, but as far as I remember weve never had snow on Christmas in this town. Thank you for your help and support. Please continue to keep us informed in the future.

    Hidemitsu Miyake, Japan

“Many thanks for the programme. Enjoyed the music and travel info about Romania. Thanks for the schedule and QSL for my previous reception report. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in 2017!

“There was an extremely interesting program on the Technical History of Radio in Romania, including how recordings were made, “Battery Bricks and the role of radio during the events of 1968. I hope you will continue to broadcast on shortwave, as this is the only way I can hear you. I really enjoyed the Technical History of Radio Romania. This was a most enjoyable program. I have told my friends about it. As always, I also enjoy your informative broadcasts very much. They are a great resource for news not only on Romania, but also about neighbouring countries such as Moldova. I am very appreciative of your broadcasts. I wish to thank you also for all the beautiful QSLs which you have sent in the past. I enjoy showing them to my friends. Please accept my best wishes, I hope to hear from you soon.

“Greetings from Canada! I write to you as the transition from early fall to late fall is underway. The trees will be bare from leaves in a matter of a few weeks. As we prepare for the first few snowflakes, temperatures are already about to fall below zero at night on a regular basis. Shortwave reception of RRI is also sporadic at times as well. Reception of European stations has been kind of hit and miss the last month. Ice hockey season has begun in Canada. It is by far the most popular sport in Canada. Many thanks for the attention to my letter and your continued presence on shortwave.

“As always I enjoyed the programs from Radio Romania. I do believe the Salt Mine Therapy information was a repeat, as I remember it from a previous show. Still I learned something new. I thought the music was great and as always the programs professional and crisp in their delivery. You guys and ladies really have it together. Can you believe its been over two straight years now I have been reporting monthly to your station? Time does fly. Thank you very much for reading my report. I hope your engineers found it useful. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Good luck and 73s.

Im Brazilian, 46 years old, Im short wave radio listening since 1988, and Im an old admirer of your station, since the times of your extinct Portuguese language section. Other souvenirs from your station would also be appreciated, I will be very grateful. I hope this report will be useful for your technical department. “Dear RRI, Some recent days here have been characterised by temperatures soaring into the high 80sF and sometimes above 90, but by high humidity as well. Even if New York State is located in the north-east of the USA, sometimes summers here can be plenty hot and unbearably humid too. I imagine that your current broadcasts will include the British decision to quit the EU. The British people decided to do so despite the obvious reluctance of their PM, Mr. Cameron. I am surprised that Great Britain made this decision. The explanation appears to be that Great Britain does not want the EU to determine their immigration policies. But this recent decision in Britain will take a while to effect. It will take months to negotiate the trade deals, etc.

“The primary reason for listening to RRI or browsing its website is to connect myself with the most friendly voice of a proud and resurgent nation that is seeking its rightful place in the comity of nations. I like RRI for what it is – its open policy of projecting not only the positive attributes but also highlighting its deficiencies which is rather rare in the world of broadcasting. RRI never fails to report of any shortfalls in its commitments to the EU or shirks from reporting of any public fund laundering even if it happens to be a person holding high office. This bold exercise reaffirms my faith in the transparency and integrity of the Romanian people which serves as a model for the world to follow. The depth and variety of the programmes offered by RRI are so multifarious that they suit audience of every taste and age group who are eager to know and learn more about the exciting country of Romania. My family and I appreciate RRI for the latest updated news and reviews that are presented in a balanced, unbiased manner, and for educating us on the current developments in the country’s music, art, cinema, culture, politics, sports, economy and science and technology. As I look back to Radio Romania’s almost 88 years of service I can easily visualize an even more glorious future scenario where RRI will be quite capable of rendering the best of broadcasting technology to its worldwide fraternity of listeners with its dynamically-oriented bouquet of programmes. RRI as the Voice of Romania has ensured that it is heard even in the remotest corners of the globe by continuing on its shortwave transmission when most of the world’s leading radio stations have curtailed it. Wouldn’t you call it an inspiration which few words can describe?
