    Sports Weekend


    The ninth leg of Romanias National ice hockey championship on Friday will see the matches pitching SC Miercurea Ciuc against Háromszéki Ágyúsok and Sportul studențesc against ACSH Gheorgheni. The return games are due on Saturday. CSM Galati ranks first in the standings with 19 points followed by Háromszéki with 15, Gheorgheni with 14 points and SC Miercurea Ciuc with 9 points.


    Romanias national rugby side will be playing a test match against Uruguay in Bucharest on Sunday. A week ago, the Romanian fifteen obtained a 30-23 win against Chile on the same stadium in Bucharest. Romania relies on a line-up of 33 rugby players coached by English Andy Robinson. They come from four sides in the domestic championships such as Steaua and Dinamo Bucharest, SCM Timisoara, CSM Baia Mare and from five French sides and an Italian one.


    Romania played its last two matches against Uruguay in Montevideo in July 2022. Our players won the first match 30-22, but lost the second 26-20. On Saturday, on the same Triumphal Arch stadium in Bucharest, the national side of Tonga will be up against Chile, in a game part of their European tour.


    On Friday in the 18th leg of the Romanian football Championships, OSK Sfântu Gheorghe takes on Petrolul Ploiești. On Saturday, Chindia Târgoviște plays Farul Constanța while Rapid Bucharest is up against CS Universitatea Craiova. Three games have been scheduled for Sunday, when UTA Arad plays FC Voluntari, CS Mioveni takes on CFR Cluj and FC Universitatea Craiova is up against FCSB. On Monday Universitatea Cluj plays FC Argeș and FC Botoșani takes on FC Hermannstadt. Farul Constanța ranks first in the standings with 40 points followed by Rapid București with 32 and CFR Cluj with 31.

    Romania’s fifteen came third
    in the 2022 edition of Rugby Europe Championship, the second most important
    competition on the continent. In the competition’s last leg, ‘the Oaks’ have
    secured a 38-12 win against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Georgia came first in
    the ranking with 20 points followed by Spain with 17. Romania mustered 14 points
    two more than Portugal on the fourth position.




    Georgia and Spain also
    occupied the first two positions in the aggregate ranking of the 2021, 2022
    editions and have automatically qualified for the World Cup due in France next
    year. Romania has thus advanced to the Final Qualification Tournament due in
    November when they will compete against three other sides representing Africa, North
    and South America and Asia-Pacific. The winner will get plane tickets for the
    World Cup 2023 hosted by France.




    Romania’s national handball side
    has blown its chances to qualify for the World Championship next year after
    being eliminated by North Macedonia in the second round of the preliminaries.
    North Macedonia had also won the first game in Skopje 30-22 and the match in
    Bucharest went to Romania 24-22, which failed to win on aggregate.




    In the domestic women’s
    championship Rapid Bucharest tops the ranking, after securing a 33-31 win
    against CSM Slatina in the competition’s 19th leg. Rapid has 38

    The Romanian forward Denis Drăguş scored for his team, Standard Liège, in the 24th leg of Belgiums top football league. His club defeated Eupen 2-0 away from home on Wednesday night. In the current season, in the 17 matches played for the Walloon side, Drăguş has scored 5 times.



    The football side Dinamo Bucharest was defeated on Wednesday in a friendly match by 3rd-leaguer CS Popeşti-Leordeni, 2-1. The game was played on Dinamos turf. This is also where this coming Sunday Dinamo will play the derby match of the Romanian football championship against FCSB, formerly Steaua Bucharest. According to mass media, this will be the last derby match on Dinamo stadium, which is scheduled to be bulldozed this spring to be replaced by a modern arena. Dinamo stadium was built in 1951 and is owned by the Romanian Interior Ministry.



    In another derby, in mens volleyball this time, Steaua won with flying colours, 3-0, against Dinamo Bucharest in the 14th leg of the national Division A1. Defending champions Arcada Galaţi scored an equally clear victory, 3-0, against Rapid Bucharest. Arcada top the current standings with 39 points, followed by Steaua, with 35. SCM U Craiova went up to the 3rd place with 34 points after beating U Cluj 3-0, and 4th come Dinamo, with 33 points.



    The Romanian tennis player Ana Bogdan qualified in the round of 16 of the ITF tournament in Andrezieux-Boutheon, France, with 60,000 USD in total prize money. In the first round, on Wednesday, she defeated Leolia Jeanjean of France, 6-3, 6-3. Bogdan, 116 WTA and seed no 3, needed 1 hour and 33 minutes to defeat an opponent ranking 373 in the world standings.     11-3 win against Steaua Bucharest on Saturday night in the finals of the
    present edition of the Super League. The game was hosted by the Triumphal Arch
    Stadium in Bucharest with no fans in attendance because of the Covid-19
    pandemic. It was a well-deserved win for trophy holder Stiinta, which proved
    superior to their opponents in every respect.






    Bulgarian athlete Boriana Kalein on Sunday won all the four finals of
    the rhythmic gymnastics championship hosted last weekend by the city of Cluj
    Napoca in western Romania. A European vice-champion this year and fifth-placed
    at the Tokyo Olympics, Boriana had also won the individual all-round event on
    Saturday






    Romanian handball side CSM Bucharest on Sunday secured a 25-22 win
    against the Germans from Borussia Dortmund in a match that counted for the
    fourth leg of the Champions League. This has been the Romanians’ second win,
    who are now ranking 6th in group A with 4 points on par with the
    side on the fifth position, Brest Bretagne. This has been the Germans’ first
    defeat in this European season and CSM will be up against Buducnost Podgorica
    of Montenegro in Bucharest next Sunday.

    football league. On Friday, Gaz Metan Medias secured a 2-1 home win against
    Dinamo Bucharest. On Saturday, FC Voluntari clinched a 2-1 away win against
    Sfantu Gheorghe and FCSB claimed a 3-0 win against FC Mioveni in Buzau.

    Romanian athlete of Russian descent Albert Saritov qualified for the
    Tokyo Olympics on Thursday after he had made it to the finals of the 97 kilogram
    of the freestyle wrestling contest in the pre-Olympic tournament in Sofia. In the round of sixteen Saritov defeated
    Polish Radoslaw Baran, then Samuel Scherrer of Switzerland in the quarters. The
    Romanian wrestler managed to outperform Ukrainian Valeri Andriţev in the
    semifinals. We recall that in 2016, Albert Saritov won for Romania a bronze
    medal at the Olympic Games in Rio.




    According to the Romanian Table Tennis Federation, Bernadette Szőcs and Ovidiu
    Ionescu have qualified for the mixed doubles of the Olympics in Tokyo. Their qualification
    was possible after the Romanian pair had come in one of the first 16 places of a
    world ranking made by the International Table Tennis Federation. Romania’s
    women side made up of Elizabeta Samara, Bernadette Szőcs, Daniela Dodean
    Monteiro and Irina Ciobanu had already qualified for the Olympics in Tokyo.

    Club Miercurea Ciuc. The hosts got the upper hand 3-0 20 minutes into the game,
    but Corona managed an excellent comeback in the second round, which they
    eventually sealed 5-1. The third round ended in one-all draw after Canadian
    Cody Fowlie had scored the victory goal for Corona, 25 seconds from time. Miercurea
    Ciuc has a 2-1 advance on aggregate though. The fourth game is due in Miercurea
    Ciuc on Tuesday and the finals is held under the best-of-five playoff series. Also
    worth noting is the bronze medalist CSM Galaţi, which secured a 6-3 away win
    against ACSH Gheorgheni. Galaţi also won the place on aggregate 3-0.

    Olaru and her team mate Nadia Kicenok have been eliminated from the WTA 1000 tournament
    in Madrid after they lost to Petra Martic of Croatia and Shelby Rogers of the
    USA 6-1, 6-4. For their participation in the aforementioned tournament, the two
    champions in Saint Petersburg this year, Olaru and Kicenok, are going to
    receive checks of 13,810 euros and 120 WTA points.

    Olympia-Perspektiven: Kanurennsport

    Der Wassersport hat den rumänischen Olympia-Teilnehmern im Laufe der Jahre wichtige Erfolge gebracht. Über die Siege im Rudern haben wir in unseren letzten Sendungen umfassend gesprochen. Heute werfen wir einen Blick auf die rumänischen Olympia-Aussichten im Kanurennsport.



    Bei den Olympischen Spielen gewannen die rumänischen Vertreter in den Kanuwettbewerben insgesamt 10 Gold-, 10 Silber- und 14 Bronzemedaillen. Die meisten Siege errangen die Canadier-Zweier-Mannschaften über 1000 Meter mit 5 Goldmedaillen. Im Jahr 1956 in Melbourne hießen die Sieger Dumitru Alexe und Simion Ismailciuc. Zwölf Jahre später, in Mexiko, triumphierten Ivan Patzaichin und Serghei Covaliov. Patzaichin gewann auch 1980 in Moskau und 1984 in Los Angeles mit Toma Simionov Gold im Zweier-Canadier. Der letzte Olympiasieg einer rumänischen Mannschaft stammt aus dem Jahr 2000 in Sydney, als Florin Popescu und Mitică Pricop gewannen.



    Die Canadier-Zweier über die 1000 Meter-Distanz ist derzeit das einzige rumänische Boot, das sich für die Olympischen Spiele in Tokio qualifiziert hat. Die Kanuten, die die Qualifikation geschafft haben, sind Cătălin Chirilă und Victor Mihalachi, nach ihrem fünften Platz im Finale der Weltmeisterschaft 2019 in Stuttgart. Obwohl ihnen ein Platz im Boot, das in Japan an den Start gehen wird, nicht garantiert ist und sie je nach aktueller sportlicher Form ausgewechselt werden können, sind Chirilă und Mihalachi die Hauptfavoriten für die Auswahl.



    Victor Mihalachi ist derzeit der erfahrenste Sportler in Rumäniens Kanurennsport-Kader. Er stammt aus der benachbarten Moldau. Mihalachi wurde am 24. Februar 1989 in Florițoaia Veche geboren und absolvierte seine ersten internationalen Auftritte als Junior für die Republik Moldau. Im Jahr 2007 wurde er in Brünn an der Seite von Hariton Ivanov Juniorenweltmeister auf der 500 Meter-Strecke. Im Jahr 2009 erhielt er die rumänische Staatsbürgerschaft. Seitdem hat Mihalachi vier Welt- und vier Europameistertitel gewonnen, dazu viele weitere Medaillen bei den Top-Rennen im Canadier-Zweier, auf den Distanzen 500 Meter und 1000 Meter. Er ist Vereinsmitglied von Dinamo Bukarest.



    Cătălin Chirilă ist Mitglied bei Steaua Bukarest. Er wurde am 11. Mai 1998 in Tulcea geboren. Die erste große Leistung seiner Karriere bei den Senioren erzielte er bei den Europaspielen 2019 in Minsk, wo er ebenfalls mit Victor Mihalachi Gold im Canadier-Zweier über 1.000 Meter holte.

    The Romanian women’s handball side Dunarea Braila has
    qualified for the quarter finals of the EHF European League after a 36-32 home
    win against the Russians from Kuban Krasnodar in a decisive Group D game.
    Dunarea, which was hankering for a win in order to make it to the competition’s
    next stage, will be up in the quarters against the winner of Group C, Minaur
    Baia Mare, also from Romania.






    In the men’s competition, Minaur Baia Mare has qualified for
    the quarter finals after outperforming Ukrainian side Donbas Mariupol 34-26 in
    a return home game on Saturday. Minaur also won the first game 24-23. The other
    Romanian side in the competition, CSM Bucharest was stopped in its tracks by
    the Greek side AEK Athens 28-23 at home and 23-29 away.




    Romanian ice hockey side Corona Brasov lost to Hungarian
    side Ferencvaros Budapest 5-2 in a home game counting towards the regional
    competition Erste Liga. The Hungarians have managed to outperform all the
    Romanian sides in Erste Liga: SC Miercurea Ciuc, CS Gheorgheni and Corona
    Brasov.




    Last weekend saw the games counting towards the 24th
    leg of Romania’s domestic championship. On Friday, FC Arges defeated FC
    Voluntari 1-0 and Universitatea Craiova also secured a 1-0 home win against
    Hermannstadt. On Saturday in Sfantu Gheorghe, local side Sepsi ended in a
    nil-all draw their game against Academica Clinceni while in Bucharest local
    side FCSB clinched a 1-0 win against Chindia Targoviste.




    On Sunday, CFR Cluj obtained a 1-0 away win against Gaz
    Metan while Astra outperformed Dinamo Bucharest 2-0 in a home match. The leg’s
    last two matches on Monday are pitching UTA Arad against FC Botosani and
    Viitorul Constanta against Poli Iasi. FCSB and CFR Cluj are topping the table
    each with 51 points followed by Craiova with 47.
