    Sports roundup

    We
begin with good news from handball. The Romanian women’s side CSM has received
a wildcard to participate in the next edition of the Champions League due to
unfold in a new format. Only SCM Ramnicu Valcea initially qualified for the
League after they had ended on the first position in the championships. Brest
Bretagne, TSK Moscow, Ferencvaros Budapest, Bietigheim, Podravca Koprivnica and
Krim Ljubljana have also received wildcards.

    Romanian men’s side Dinamo
Bucharest also hoped for a wildcard for the Champions League, as they had been
edged out of the present edition without any defeat. However, their dreams have
been shattered by the European Federation whose decision allows Dinamo to play
in the new continental competition the European Handball League directly in the
    groups’ stage.

    The Dutch Martine Smeets,
one of the world’s best left wings, has been transferred to CSM Bucharest. A
world champion and bronze medalist in the European Championship with the Dutch
side, Smeets comes after a season at French team Metz. She is the fourth player
to have joined the Romanian side for the future season, after French Siraba
Dembele, Spanish Alexandrina Cabral Barbosa and Barbara Lazovic of Slovenia. On
the other hand Norwegian player Nora Mork has announced her departure from CSM
    Bucharest.

    Last weekend saw the matches
counting towards the championship of Romania’s first football league. On Friday
Universitatea Craiova secured a 2-1 win against Astra Giurgiu and CFR Cluj on
Saturday clinched a 2-0 away win against FC Botosani. On Sunday in Bucharest
FCSB and Gaz Metan Medias ended in a draw their game, two-all. CFR tops the
table in the first league with 36 points followed by Craiova with 29.

    On Sunday FC Voluntari
secured a 1-0 home win against Poli Iasi while Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe managed a
3-1 away win against Dinamo Bucharest.

True Stories of the Romanian Sports World

    Ivan Patzaichin was the greatest
Romanian canoeist of all time. All along his career he reaped 8 world
titles between 1970 and 1983, as well as 4 Olympic gold medals at the
five Olympic Games he attended between 1968 and 1984.

He was born on November 26th
1949 and in 1967 he signed up with Dinamo Bucharest Sports Club. He
was inspired by the performance obtained by three boys from his
native village in the Danube Delta who had earlier become world
champions in Berlin. Patzaichin obtained his first notable
performance three months later, when he came in second in the
national under twenty-one championship. A year later in 1968 he won
his first Olympic gold in the 1000 meter men’s canoe double race
    together with Serghei Covaliov.

Patzaichin made history at the Olympic
Games in Munich in 1972 after
his paddle had broken right at the beginning of the 1000 meter
    qualifying race. The referees didn’t
stop the race as regulations required, so Patzaichin had to use what
was left of the paddle to end the race three minutes after the first
boat. There was a lot of talk, but the Romanian was eventually
allowed to compete in the semifinals on September 8th
when he ended the race three seconds ahead runner-up
    Czech Jiří Čtvrtečka.

The Romanian was 20 seconds faster
than the winners of the other series and became the odds-on favourite
of the finals race on September 9, where he obtained a clear win
almost four seconds ahead the runner-up, Tamas Wichmann of Hungary.

By the end of his career Patzaichin
won two more Olympic gold medals: in 1980 in Moscow and in the 1000
meter double race of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles four years
    later together with Toma
    Semionov.

    After withdrawing from competitions,
Patzaichin coached Romania’s kayak-canoe team for many years,
winning numerous medals in European, world and Olympic contests. He
later got involved in various projects of promoting the Danube Delta,
its people and traditions. He is staging traditional boat contests
and supports various projects on sustainable tourism in the region.

This weekend matches counting for the 25th leg of Romanias top football league are scheduled, accounting for the last but one stage in this regular season. Two matches on Friday, Chindia Targoviste vs FC Voluntari, in Ploiesti, and CFR Cluj vs Viitorul Constanta in Cluj, will be followed on Saturday by a game pitting Academica Clinceni against Gaz Metan Medias. Also on Saturday, Politehnica Iasi take on Universitatea Craiova. On Sunday, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe face FC Botosani, while later in the evening the traditional Romanian derby between Dinamo Bucharest and FCSB takes place on the National Arena.

This is the 176th match between the two Bucharest clubs, and we cannot help noticing the perfectly even score in direct matches so far: each team has won 59 games, and the other matches ended in draws. In terms of championship matches, Dinamo have a slight advantage, with 48 wins against 43, whereas in Romanias Cup FCSB have so far won 15 games and lost 8 of its matches against Dinamo.

The first time the 2 sides met in the Romanian League One was in November 1948, when Dinamo beat the Army Sports Club, as the team was called at that time, 1-nil. The most recent match was in October 2019, and was a 1-all draw. Dinamo has not won any direct matches against FCSB for almost 3 years, more specifically since May 1, 2017.

Sundays match comes at a time when the 2 sides are widely apart in the championship standings. FCSB is ranked 3rd at the moment and targets a new champion title. Dinamo, on the other hand, ranks 9th, stands no more chances to move up into the playoffs and, for the 3rd consecutive year, will stay in the play-outs. Still, this is the one match in which the players drive and sense of competitiveness might overturn any previous mathematical estimates.

We should also mention that the 25th championship leg will end on Monday with a game in Sibiu, pitting FC Hermannstadt against Astra Giurgiu.

Topping the charts at present are CFR Cluj with 48 points, followed by Craiova and FCSB with 43 points each.

    COMMISSIONER The
Romanian MEP Adina Valean was accepted by the elected European Commission
president Ursula von der Leyen for the position of the European Commissioner
for Transport, an EU spokesperson announced on Wednesday. Romania’s candidate is
to be interviewed by the Transport Committee of the European Parliament on
November 14th. Romania’s new Prime Minister Ludovic Orban on
Wednesday said the MEPs Siegfried Muresan and Adina Valean were the
government’s proposals for this position. Orban specified he had made this
decision after talks with the country’s president Klaus Iohannis. According to
the European Commission’s spokeswoman Mina Andreeva, there were serious doubts
over the legitimacy of the proposal coming from the country’s former PSD government
led by Viorica Dancila, who didn’t consult the country’s president on their
candidate, the former minister delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu. We
recall that another PSD candidate, Rovana Plumb had been rejected by the
    European Parliament.

on Wednesday held talks with Avraham Duvdevani, chairman of the World Zionist
Organisation. High on the agenda were the relations between Romania and Israel
as well as the efforts Bucharest makes to fight Antisemitism, xenophobia and
intolerance. According to a communiqué from the presidential administration,
Iohannis has underlined the fact that Israel is a trustworthy partner for
Romania as the two countries have enjoyed 71 years of uninterrupted diplomatic
relations based on political dialogue and good cooperation. Iohannis gave
assurances he would continue to pay special attention to the partnership
between Romania and Israel adding that the legislation against Antisemitism,
intolerance and xenophobia must be applied rigorously and the education about
    the holocaust must be promoted.

PROTEST Romanian haulers have pointed to
the serious issues reported at the Hungarian border in the last few days, where
freight trucks have been waiting in a 25-km-long line to cross the border. One
of the biggest employers in the field has announced protests and the blocking
of crossing points for light traffic. The Europa 2002 Association of Transport
Employers from Arad says crossing the Hungarian border has never been harder,
pointing the finger at the Hungarian authorities, who starting November 1 have
been performing detailed inspections of freight transport vehicles, which
incrementally increases waiting times for crossing the border.
