Präsident Klaus Iohannis hat am Mittwochabend die von den Sozialdemokraten vorgeschlagene Europa-Abgeordnete Viorica Dăncilă zur Ministerpräsidentin ernannt. Dabei berief er sich auf die Verfassung, die Entscheidungen des Verfassungsgerichts und die parlamentarische Arithmetik“. Die Sozialdemokraten hätten eine Mehrheit im Parlament, begründete Iohannis seine Entscheidung. Der Posten des Regierungschefs war nach dem Rücktritt des Sozialdemokraten Mihai Tudose frei geworden. Die eigene Partei hatte dem Ministerpräsidenten nach einem internen Konflikt die politische Unterstützung entzogen. Die Nationalliberale Partei und die Union Rettet Rumänien aus der Opposition hatten im Vorfeld ihre Absicht bekanntgegeben, die Nominierung nicht zu unterstützen. Neuwahlen seien nach ihrer Ansicht eine mögliche Lösung. Die Partei der Volksbewegung, ebenfalls in der Opposition, schlug den Parteivorsitzenden Eugen Tomac und den Europa-Abgeordneten Siegfried Mureşan als mögliche Premierminister vor. Der Ungarnverband wollte den Standpunkt des Präsidenten zur Kandidatur der Sozialdemokratin Viorica Dăncilă abwarten. Die Fraktion der im Parlament vertretenen Minderheiten war nach eigenen Angaben lediglich mit einem Informationsauftrag in die Beratungsrunde gegangen. Man hoffe, dass in sechs Monaten keine weitere Beratungsrunde für die Bildung einer neuen Regierung notwendig sein werde, hieß es.

Die wöchentliche Sitzung der rumänischen Regierung ist am Mittwoch von dem Interims-Premier Mihai Fifor geleitet worden. Er beschloss dabei, den Chef der Rumänischen Polizei, Bogdan Despescu, des Amtes zu entheben. Die Entscheidung wurde vor dem Hintergrund des Skandals um einen des sexuellen Missbrauchs an Kindern beschuldigten Polizeibeamten getroffen. Fifor ernannte für sechs Monate den Quästor Cătălin Ioniţă zum Polizeichef. Zwischen der Innenministerin Carmen Dan und dem ehemaligen Premier Mihai Tudose war ein Konflikt entfacht, der mit dem Rücktritt von Tudose endete. Die Kollegen des beschuldigten Polizisten hätten diesen geschützt, hieß es in den Medien.

Der rumänische Generalstabchef Nicolae Ciucă hat sich am Mittwoch in Brüssel an der Konferenz des militärischen NATO-Ausschusses auf Verteidigungsebene beteiligt. Laut einer Mitteilung des Verteidigungsministeriums in Bukarest ging es dabei um die Sicherheitsanforderungen an der NATO-Südgrenze und den Beitrag der Allianz zur Stabilisierung der Sicherheit, die Mission in Afghanistan sowie die Rolle der NATO bei der Reform des Sicherheitssektors im Irak. Der militärische Ausschuss kommt zwei Mal im Jahr in Brüssel zusammen, um die NATO-Operationen und Missionen zu analysieren.

SPORT: Die rumänische Tennisspielerin Irina Begu (40. WTA) ist am Mittwoch in der zweiten Runde der Australian Open in Melbourne ausgeschieden. Sie unterlag der kroatischen Spielerin Petra Martic mit 4:6 und 6:7. Am Donnerstag (Ortszeit) werden weitere drei rumänische Spielerinnen in der zweiten Runde antreten. Simona Halep tritt gegen Eugenie Bouchard aus Kanada an, Sorana Cîrstea spielt gegen die Tschechin Lucie Safarova und Ana Bogdan kämpft gegen Yulia Putintseva aus Kasachstan. Im Damendoppel qulifizierten sich Irina Begu, Monica Niculescu, Raluca Olaru und Sorana Cîrstea für die zweite Runde des Tourniers. Begu und Niculescu besiegten das kroatisch-deutsche Paar Mirjana Lucic-Baroni/Andrea Petkovic mit 6:7 (6), 6:3, 6:2. Das Paar Cîrstea/Beeatriz Haddad Maia (Brasilien) besiegte mit 6:2, 6:2 das Paar Veronika Kudermetova (Russland)/Aryna Sabalenka (Weißrussland). Olaru und die Ukrainerin Olga Savciuk gewannen mit 6:3, 6:3 gegen das ukrainsiche Duo Putintseva/Katerina Kozlova.

Bukarest: Der rumänische Premierminister Mihai Tudose ist am Montag Abend zurückgetreten. Der Vorstand der Sozialdemokratischen Partei PSD – der größten Partei der Regierungskoalition in Bukarest – hatte ihm in einer Krisensitzung die Unterstützung entzogen. Präsident Klaus Iohannis beauftragte Verteidigungsminister Mihai Fifor mit der kommissarischen Führung der Amtsgeschäfte und berief für Mittwoch Gespräche mit den Parlamentsparteien ein. Die Sozialdemokraten haben sich inzwischen auch auf eine neue mögliche Regierungschefin geeinigt – die 54jährige Europaabgeordnete Viorica Dancila aus der eigenen Partei.

Bukarest: Historischer Besuch: zum ersten Mal kommt mit Shinzo Abe ein japanischer Ministerpräsident nach Rumänien. Abe trifft sich am Dienstag mit Präsident Klaus Iohannis. Der japanische Regierungschef wird von einer Delegation von Geschäftsleuten aus seinem Land begleitet. In 2013 haben Rumänien und Japan ihre Partnerschaft erneuert. Shinzo Abe befindet sich auf einer diplomatischen Rundreise durch Mittel- und Osteuropa, wo er um Unterstützung für seinen harten Kurs in der Politik gegenüber Nordkorea wirbt.

Bukarest: Der rumänische Justizminister Tudorel Toader diskutiert am Dienstag in Strassburg mit dem Präsidenten des EGMR, Guido Raimondi, über die Maßnahmen der Behörden zur Verbesserung der Lage in den Gefängnissen. In einem Piloturteil hatte der Gerichtshof bestätigt, dass die Zustände in den rumänischen Haftanstalten die Menschenrechte verletzen und der Regierung bis zum 25. Januar Zeit gegeben, einen Fahrplan zur Verbesserung der Lage vorzulegen. Justizministrer Tudose hatte unlängst in Aussicht gestellt, dass die Maßnahmen dem EGMR am 22. Januar übermittelt werden.

Sport: Simona Halep ist am Dienstag mit einigen Schwierigkeiten beim Australian Open eine Runde weitergekommen. Die Weltrangerste setze sich gegen Destanee Aiava aus Australien mit 7-6, 6-1 durch, klagte dabei über Schmerzen am Knöchel. Halep, die Hauptfavoritin des Turnier, tritt nun gegen die Kanadierin Eugenie Bouchard an. Zwei weitere Spielerinnen aus Rumänien, Irina Begu und Sorana Cîrstea, stehen ebenfalls in der zweiten Runde. Begu setzte sich am Montag gegen die Russin Jekaterina Makarova durch, Cîrstea besiegte am Dienstag Zarina Dyias aus Kasachstan und spielt jetzt gegen Lucie Safarova aus Tschechien. Ana Bogdan überraschte ihrerseits mit ihrem Sieg gegen die Französin Kristina Mladenovic, nr. 11 der Weltrangliste.

Anul sportiv 2017 (I)

Anul sportiv 2017 a fost primul an al noului ciclu olimpic şi a adus rezultate bune reprezentanţilor României la multe discipline. Cea mai spectaculoasă revenire a fost cea a canotajului, mai ales prin prisma performanţelor obţinute la Campionatele Mondiale. Să parcurgem însă principalele evenimente ale anului din perspectivă cronologică.

Principalul eveniment al lunii ianuarie a fost Openul Australiei la tenis. Cel mai departe, la simplu, a ajuns Sorana Cîrstea, calificată în optimile de finală. Drumul ei a fost însă oprit de jucătoarea spaniolă Garbine Muguruza, a şaptea favorită a competiţiei. Alţi doi români, Horia Tecău, alături de olandezul Jean-Julien Rojer, şi Florin Mergea, împreună cu britanicul Dominic Inglot, s-au oprit în optimile de finală ale probei de dublu masculin.

În debutul lunii februarie, boxerul român Cristian Ciocan şi-a apărat titlul de campion european WBO la categoria grea. El l-a învins, într-o gală desfăşurată la Londra, pe britanicul David Price, prin KO tehnic. La tenis, în Cupa Davis, România a pierdut, la Minsk, cu 2 la 3, în faţa echipei statului Belarus. Partida a contat pentru primul tur al Grupei I valorice a zonei Europa – Africa. Nici la feminin lucrurile nu au mers mai bine. În Fed Cup, într-o partidă contând pentru primul tur al Grupei Mondiale II, Belgia a învins România cu 3 la 1, la Bucureşti.

Luna martie a adus primul rezultat bun al anului din tenis. Horia Tecău s-a impus, alături de olandezul Jean-Julien Rojer, în proba de dublu a turneului de la Dubai. Cei doi au trecut, în finalǎ, cu 4-6, 6-3, 10-3, de cuplul compus din indianul Rohan Bopanna şi polonezul Marcin Matkowski. Tot în martie, România a câştigat ediţia 2017 a competiţiei Rugby Europe Championship. În ultimul joc al întrecerii, Stejarii au învins, la Bucureşti, echipa Georgiei, cu 8 la 7. În clasament, România şi Georgia au ocupat primele două locuri, cu 19 puncte fiecare, departajate de victoria obţinută de români în jocul direct.

În aprilie s-au desfăşurat Campionatele Europene de haltere, găzduite de oraşul croat Split. Delegaţia română a obţinut 17 medalii, dintre care şase de aur, patru de argint şi şapte de bronz. Cel mai bine s-a comportat Loredana Toma, care a dominat categoria 63 de kg, cu medalii de aur la ambele stiluri şi la total. Au urmat Campionatele Europene de gimnastică, găzduite de Cluj. Veteranul Marian Drăgulescu, sportiv în vârstă de 36 de ani, a câştigat medalia de aur la sol şi argintul la sărituri. La feminin, la bârnă, Cătălina Ponor, triplă campioană olimpică la Atena, în 2004, ajunsă la 30 de ani, a obţinut aurul, iar Larisa Iordache, medalia de bronz.

La tenis, echipa de Fed Cup a României şi-a menţinut locul în Grupa Mondială II. În meciul de baraj pentru menţinerea în al doilea eşalon valoric al tenisului feminin, la Mamaia, lângă Constanţa, formaţia română a trecut de echipa Marii Britanii cu 3 la 2. Luna s-a încheiat cu victoria perechii formate din tenismanul român Florin Mergea şi pakistanezul Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi în proba de dublu a turneului ATP de la Barcelona. Cei doi au învins în finală cuplul germano-austriac Philipp Petzschner / Alexander Peya cu 6-4, 6-3.

În luna mai, campioana României la handbal feminin, CSM Bucureşti, a câştigat medaliile de bronz în Liga Campionilor, după turneul final găzduit de Budapesta. CSM a învins-o, în finala mică, pe campioana Muntenegrului, Buducnost Podgorica, cu 26-20. În semifinală, CSM pierduse în faţa campioanei Macedoniei, Vardar Skopje, cu 33-38. Trofeul a fost câştigat de Györ, campioana Ungariei. La Campionatele Europene de lupte de la Novi Sad, din Serbia, România a câştigat două medalii, ambele la lupte libere: argint pentru Andrei Dukov, la categoria 57 de kilograme şi bronz prin Alina Vuc, la 48 de kilograme.

Tot în mai, echipa Viitorul Constanţa a devenit noua campioană a României la fotbal. Formaţia patronată şi antrenată de Gheorghe Hagi a terminat play-off-ul Ligii Întâi la egalitate de puncte cu echipa FCSB, fostă Steaua. Departajarea s-a făcut în urma rezultatelor directe din play-off, favorabile constănţenilor. La tenis, jucătoarea română Simona Halep a câştigat turneul WTA de la Madrid, pentru al doilea an consecutiv. Ea a învins-o în finală pe Kristina Mladenovic, din Franţa, cu 7-5, 6-7, 6-2. La box, Cristian Ciocan şi-a apărat cu succes centura de campion european WBO la categoria grea, după ce, la Hamburg, s-a impus la puncte în faţa francezului de origine algeriană Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf. După 10 reprize, românul, pe numele său german de ring Christian Hammer, a primit decizia în unanimitate.

Luna s-a încheiat cu Campionatele Europene de canotaj găzduite de Cehia. Pe apele de la Račice, canotoarele tricolore au câştigat trei medalii de aur, iar băieţii – una de argint. Primul aur a fost obţinut în proba feminină de patru rame, de Cristina Popescu, Alina Elena Pop, Beatrice Parfenie şi Georgiana Paraşcanu, după care Mădălina Bereş şi Laura Oprea s-au impus în proba feminină de doi rame fără cârmaci. A venit apoi victoria clară a ambarcaţiunii feminine de 8+1. Medalia de argint de la băieţi a fost câştigată de echipajul masculin de patru rame, format din Cristian Ivaşcu, Vlad Dragoş Aicoboae, Marius Vasile Cozmiuc şi Ciprian Tudosă.

În iunie, Simona Halep a ratat, din nou, câştigarea unui turneu de Mare Şlem. Ea a pierdut finala de la Roland Garros în faţa sportivei letone Elena Ostapenko, numărul 47 în clasamentul WTA la ora partidei. Apoi, la Tbilisi, în Georgia, echipa feminină de spadă a României, într-o formulă foarte tânără, a cucerit medaliile de bronz la Campionatele Europene de scrimă, după ce a învins Estonia, cu 45-38, în finala mică.

BUSINESS FORUM – The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and his Croat counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who is on a state visit to Bucharest, on Tuesday opened the works of the Romanian – Croat Business Forum. On the occasion, the Romanian President pointed out that bilateral trade exchanges neared 300 million euros. In his opinion, although this is a low level given the potential of the two economies, recent developments are nevertheless encouraging. During Mondays talks the two presidents approached, among other things, ways to improve cooperation within the EU and NATO.

VISIT – Romanias Prime Minister Mihai Tudose, on a visit to neighbouring Bulgaria, on Tuesday stated that, within a year, the two countries would be joining the Schengen agreement. In a joint conference with his Bulgarian counterpart Boiko Borisov, Tudose also said that the two countries were “condemned to be together” with regard to Schengen accession. The two officials chaired in Varna the fourth joint working session of Bucharest and Sofia government representatives. The agenda of the meeting included topics such as economic cooperation, transport and energy infrastructure, regional development and cross-border cooperation. A joint declaration on the main directions of bilateral, regional, European, Euro-Atlantic and international cooperation was signed in the presence of the two officials. Also in Varna, the Romanian Prime Minister attended a 4-party summit involving the participation of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece.

CARTEL ALFA – One of the most important trade union confederations in Romania, Cartel Alfa, will stage a protest meeting on Wednesday, in front of the Government building. Protesters are unhappy with authorities decision to have employees pay social contributions, a responsibility that used to be that of the employer, and call for collective employment agreements to be concluded at all levels. Trade unionists are also unhappy with the public salary law and the social dialogue law. According to Cartel Alfa, the meeting will be attended by some 10,000 people.

CONSTITUTIONAL COURT – The Constitutional Court of Romania on Tuesday stated that the chief-prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate Laura Codruta Kovesi has to appear before the parliamentary committee investigating the 2009 presidential election. Also, according to the Court, Kovesi must provide all the documents requested by the committee. The Constitutional Court discussed the requests for settling the legal conflict between Parliament and the Public Ministry, which is part of the judicial authority. The requests were filed by the Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Liviu Dragnea, after the head of the Anticorruption Directorate refused to appear before the committee. The General Prosecutors Office had also started an investigation into the 2009 presidential elections, but the case was classified. Both investigations were started following allegations by a controversial journalist, who claimed that the elections were influenced by high-ranking state officials, including heads of powerful public institutions. The election was won by the right wing representative Traian Basescu, to the detriment of the Social Democrat Mircea Geoana.

CORRUPTION – The Romanian Senate has rejected the request filed by the National Anticorruption Directorate to start the prosecution of the minister for the relation with Parliament Viorel Ilie. 77 senators voted against and 37 for. The Anticorruption Directorate accuses Ilie of instigation to direct and indirect use of information that are not to be made public and of allowing the access of unauthorized people to such information, during his ministerial term. In late July, the Minister for the Relation with Parliament organized an employment contest, which, according to the National Anticorruption Directorate, was arranged to favour certain candidates.

SIMPLE MOTION – On Wednesday, the Romanian Parliament will debate and vote on the simple motion filed by the main opposition party, the National Liberal Party, against the Transport Minister Razvan Cuc. The signatories of the motion are accusing minister Cuc of faulty management, lack of professionalism and excessive politization within the ministry. Also, the liberals say the minister has blocked large infrastructure projects, whose deadlines have long been exceeded.

CATALONIA – An anti-police strike on Tuesday gripped the province of Catalonia, in north-eastern Spain. Catalan trade unions called the strike to show public anger at Spanish police violence during Sundays referendum on the regions independence. Some 300,000 people took to the streets of Barcelona and other cities across Catalonia to denounce the violent intervention of the police during the referendum and to defend the results of the referendum, which was declared illegal by the central government. The leader of the Catalan regional government Carles Puigdemont called for the withdrawal of the riot police deployed in Madrid and said international mediation was needed. In Bucharest, Romanian Foreign Ministry representatives reiterated Romanias firm support for Spains sovereignty and territorial integrity.

NOBEL PRIZE – Three American astrophysicists, Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne on Tuesday won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their studies on gravitational waves. The Nobel Prize in Physics is the second prize announced in the series of prizes made public each year. On Wednesday the Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced. According to tradition, the Nobel Prizes will be handed to their winners as part of an official ceremony to be held on December 10, the day when the death of the founder of the Nobel Prize, Alfred Nobel, is commemorated.

TENNIS TOURNAMENT – The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, ranking 2nd in the WTA classification, on Tuesday qualified for the eighth finals of the Beijing tournament, with 6.4 million dollars in prize money. She defeated the Slovak player Magdalena Rybarikova, no. 28 WTA, who abandoned the game in the second set. In the next round Simona will play against the Russian Maria Sarapova, no. 104 WTA, whom she has not managed to defeat so far. Another Romanian player, Sorana Cirstea, has too qualified for the next round, after she defeated the American Christina McHale. The third Romanian player participating in the tournament, Monica Niculescu, will play on Wednesday against the Chinese Shuai Peng. (translated by M. Ignatescu)

ALERT SYSTEM – A text-message alert system advising people of potential dangers due to adverse weather conditions in Romania will be ready within a few weeks according to specialists in the field. The warnings, to be issued by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations or by local inspectorates are meant to reach both locals and tourists in the affected areas. The authorities have decided to speed up the process of putting in place such a system following the powerful storms that hit Romania last Sunday, killing 8 people and wounding 140.

INVICTUS GAMES – The Romanian Defense Minister Mihai Fifor and the Romanian Army Chief of Staff, General Nicolae Ciuca, are attending the opening of the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada. Invictus Team Romania, participating for the first time in these paralympic games, is made up of 15 soldiers wounded in theatres of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The two officials will also attend the teams training sessions and part of the sporting events. The members of Invictus Team Romania will take part in six individual events: archery, athletics, indoor rowing, power lifting, cycling and swimming. Also, the Romanian team will compete in the sitting volleyball competition. Photos posted on social media show the Romanian Invictus team meeting with Prince Harry of Great Britain, the one who established the competition in 2014.

GERMAN ELECTIONS – Parliamentary elections are due in Germany on Sunday. Angela Merkel is hoping for a fourth term as Chancellor, even if her party, the Christian Democratic Union, is not likely to get majority and will therefore have to bring in partners to form a coalition. According to the latest opinion polls, Mrs. Merkels party and its Bavarian branch – the Christian Social Union – would get 36% of the votes. Second, with 23%, comes the Social Democratic Party, headed by the former President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz. Angela Merkel is preferred by 48% of the voters, while Martin Schulz is supported by only 22% of the voting population.

MIGRATION – At least 21 people died yesterday when a boat carrying migrants sank in the Black Sea, off the Turkish coast, France Presse reports. 70 people were on board the boat which was heading for Romania, most of them Iraqi citizens. According to France Presse, some 570 illegal migrants have reached Romania since August following the Black Sea route, which allows them to avoid Greece. If found in Greece they run the risk of being returned to Turkey, under the agreement concluded between the EU and the Turkish government.

FRENCH ELECTIONS – A Romanian-born ethnic Roma, who graduated from the Sorbonne, is running for one of the 348 seats in the French Senate. Anina Ciuciu, aged 27, was invited to take part in Sundays elections by ecologists. She militates for free access of all children to education and is a fierce fighter against discrimination and police brutality.

GEORGE ENESCU FESTIVAL – The George Enescu International Festival, held every two years in Romania, ends on Sunday. On the last day of the event, in the Grand Orchestras of the World series, performing will be the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam conducted by Daniele Gatti. Some three thousand artists have been invited to participate in this years edition of the festival held over September 2nd – 24th. The first edition of the George Enescu Festival was held in 1958. In 1971, the communist regime decided to put an end to it, and the festival was only resumed after the fall of the regime in 1989.

TENNIS – On Saturday, the Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu defeated the Chinese Fangzhou Liu 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the last round of qualifications for the WTA tournament in Wuhan, China, with some 2,300,000 dollars in prize money. In the first singles event, Monica Niculescu, ranked 56th in the WTA classification, will take on the Dutch Kiki Bertens, no. 29 WTA. Simona Halep, no.2 in the WTA rankings, is second seed at the tournament and she will go straight into the second round. Another Romanian taking part in the tournament is Sorana Cirstea, no. 52 WTA, who will play against the Chinese Yafang Wang. In the doubles, Halep and Niculescu will play in the first round against the pair made up of the Romanian Sorana Cirstea and the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. Raluca Olaru, also of Romania, and the Ukranian Liudmila Kicenok will take on the pair Raquel Atawo(US)/Darija Jurak(Croatia).

Bad weather. The government is to decide the amount of
financial compensation for the damage caused by bad weather in western Romania.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, Wednesday’s
rainfalls and strong winds caused damages in the capital Bucharest and 38 towns
and villages in 15 other counties. 3 people were also killed. More than 4,000
troops from the army’s fire service and 1,000 pieces of equipment were on duty
in the last 24 hours to help limit and eliminate the effects of bad weather,
including evacuating the water from flooded homes and courtyards and removing
felled trees. Tens of roofs were partly or completely damaged. Road travel was
temporarily disrupted because of trees that fell on the streets.

US trip. Romania’s president Klaus
Iohannis today travels to Philadelphia to visit the Independence Hall, a
symbolic venue in American history and one with historical significance for the
affirmation of the statehood of the countries in Central Europe, including
Romania. President Iohannis will also meet members of the Romanian community in
the area. He arrived in the United States on Sunday to attend the UN General
Assembly in New York. He held an address on Wednesday calling for the need to
create an international court for terrorism. He also said Romania was expecting
the UN to boost its contribution to global efforts in the area of international
migration.

Defence. The Romanian defence minister Mihai Fifor on Wednesday met
senator Joni Ernst, the president of the Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee of the
Committee on Armed Services. The two officials discussed the security situation
in the Black Sea area, ways to consolidate the Romania-US strategic partnership
and bilateral cooperation with a view to achieving the operational capabilities
of the Romanian Army to allow interoperability with other NATO allies. Mihai
Fifor presented his government’s priorities in the area of defence following
the allocation of 2% of the GDP to defence spending. Senator Joni Ernst
reiterated her country’s commitment to the development of military cooperation
with Romania and hailed this country’s constant efforts in international
theatres of operation and missions. Also on Wednesday, the Romanian minister
attended a working meeting held by the American-Romanian Business Council with

Ukraine law. Romania’s delegation to the Council of Europe
Parliamentary Assembly is to call on this body to hold a debate next month to
adopt a resolution on monitoring the way in which Ukraine respects the rights
of ethnic minorities. The announcement was made by the head of the delegation
Titus Corlatean, who said Romania supports Ukraine’s efforts to join the
European Union while warning that this country will have to fulfil the
accession criteria. On Wednesday, the Senate and Chamber of Deputies in
Bucharest passed a joint declaration on Ukraine’s new education law saying it
drastically limits the right to education in their mother tongue for ethnic
Romanians in Ukraine.

Tennis. The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea, world
no. 52, has defeated the American player Nicole Gibb to reach the quartefinals
of the WTA tournament in Seoul worth almost 227,000 dollars. Cirstea will next
face Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum for a place in the semifinals. Cirstea will also
play the doubles semifinals together with Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, where they
will face the British-Australian pair Katy Dunne and Priscilla Hon.

Invictus Games. The team of Romanian military injured in
operations left for Toronto, Canada, today to take part in the Invictus Games.
The 15 members of the team will compete in six individual sports disciplines:
archery, athletics, indoor rowing, weightlifting, cycling and swimming.

PRIME MINISTER – The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, Monday night designated the interim Economy Minister Mihai Tudose, 50, as the new Prime Minister. Further to consultations held throughout the day with the leaders of parliamentary parties, the head of state accepted the proposal made by the ruling coalition, formed by the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats. The coalition feels entitled to make the nomination, after last week they voted to dismiss their own government, headed by Sorin Grindeanu. According to President Iohannis, the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats say they have a majority in Parliament, and the opposition parties did not come up with any proposals, nor did they hint that they have a political agreement on the topic. On the other hand, the President added, the current crisis severely damages Romania and it must end as soon as possible. This is why the President called on all parliamentary parties to put together an agenda enabling them to complete the parliamentary procedures this week, so that Romania may have a new Government.

BACCALAUREATE – 135,000 high school graduates in Romania Monday took the Romanian language and literature test, the first test in the Baccalaureate exam. On Tuesday the students with native languages other than Romanian will be tested in their native language and literature, and on Wednesday the compulsory test corresponding to the chosen profile is scheduled, with the last written test of the current session scheduled on Friday. Statistics show that in the academic year that has just ended, the total number of students in the Romanian education system was nearly 3.6 million, down 45,000 since the previous year.

FLAG DAY – On Monday, Romania celebrated the National Flag Day. She defeated the Czech Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2, and is to play next against Britains Johanna Konta. Two other Romanians, Simona Halep, number 2 in the world and Monica Niculescu (51 WTA) will also play in the second round. Halep will take on the Chinese Ying-Ying Duan, while Niculescu is up against the Bulgarian Tvetana Pironkova, after Petra Kvitova (the Czech Republic) withdrew from the competition. Eastbourne is the last test before the third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon.

Die größten Chancen auf einen Sprung in den zweiten Wahlgang hätten laut französischen Medienberichten der Parteilose Emmanuel Macron, die Rechtspopulistin von der Front National Marine Le Pen, der Kandidat der konservativen Republikaner Francois Fillon, sowie der Kandidat der Linken, Jean Luc Melenchon.

Bukarest: Die Rekord-Bergsteiger Dor Geta Popescu und Erik Gulacsi sind am Samstag bei einem Lawinenunglück im südwestrumänischen Retezat-Gebirge gestorben. Die 13-jährige Dor Geta Popescu war sechsfache Weltrekordlerin und hatte ebenfalls einen europäischen Rekord aufgestellt. Mit 10 Jahren war sie die jüngste Bergsteigerin weltweit, die den 5.000 Meter hohen Ararat-Gipfel bestiegen hatte. Der 14-jährige Erik Gulacsi hatte voriges Jahr den Titel: Europas jüngster Bergsteiger erobert, der den 6.900 Meter hohen Aconcagua-Gipfel erreicht hatte. Der Gipfel in Argentinien gilt als der höchste Amerikas. Dor Geta Popescu und Erik Gulacsi waren beide Mitglieder des Bergsteigerclubs Clubul Sportiv Montan Altitudine in Râşnov (Rosenau). Die Behörden hatten am Samgstag vor einem Lawinenrisiko im Retezat-Gebirge gewarnt.

Bukarest: Die Erbprinzessin Margareta, die zur Verwahrerin der rumänischen Krone ernannt wurde, wird am 26. April eine Rede in der feierlichen Sitzung des rumänischen Parlaments aus dem Anlass des 100. Jubiläums Iaşi – Hauptstadt des Rumänischen Königreichs zwischen 1916 und 1918 und Stadt der Großen Vereinigung halten. Vor 100 Jahren hatte der Senat und der Abgeordnetenrat im ostrumänischen Iaşi, die Gesetze verabschiedet, die den rumänischen Staat reformiert haben: das sogenannte Agrar-Gesetz und das Wahlgesetz. Bei der EM 2017 gingen 274 Sportler aus 37 Ländern an den Start (168 Männer und 106 Frauen).

Tennis: Rumänien hat das Duell in den Fed-Cup Playoffs gegen Großbritannien 3 zu 1 gewonnen und bleibt somit in der Weltgruppe. Die Weltranglistenfünfte Simona Halep hat sich am Sonntag gegen die Britin Johanna Konta, 6-1, 6-3 durchgesetzt und Irina Begu hat ebenfalls in zwei Sätzen, 6-4, 7-5 das entscheidende Spiel gegen Heather Watson gewonnen. Am Samstag hatte Halep gegen Heather Watson gewonnen, während Sorana Cîrstea im Spiel gegen Johanna Konta eine Niederlage erlitt. Das Duell von Samstag zwischen Conta und Cîrstea musste zwischenzeitlich unterbrochen werden, als der ehemalige ATP-Nummer 1 und aktueller Captain des rumänischen Fed-Cup Teams Ilie Năstase die britische Spielerin und die Captain Anne Keothavong beleidigte. Bereits am Vortag hatte Năstase wegen rassistischer Witze über das ungeborene Baby von Serena Williams für einen Skandal gesorgt. Der Internationale Tennisverband hatte infolgedessen eine Untersuchung eingeleitet.

Fed Cup: România-Belgia 1-3

UPDATE: S-a încheiat și ultimul meci dintre România și Belgia din primul tur al Grupei Mondiale II a Fed Cup. Monica Niclescu și Sorana Cîrstea aduc singura victorie în meciul de dublu (6-2, 6-0), împotriva perechii belgiene Kirsten Flipkens/Maryna Zanevska. Ultimul meci de simplu nu s-a mai disputat.

România a pierdut întâlnirea cu Belgia din primul tur al Grupei Mondiale II a Fed Cup. Belgiencele au reușit trei victorii din tot atâtea meciuri desfășurate la Sala Polivalentă din București. Duminică, Irina Begu a fost învinsă de Elise Mertens, scor 6-3, 5-7, 5-7. Reprezentanta României a avut multe șanse de break cu care ar fi putut răsturna scorul, dar a fructificat prea puține.

Sâmbătă, ambele reprezentante ale României au fost învinde de belgience. Monica Niculescu a piedut meciul de deschidere cu Kirsten Flipkens, cor 3-6, 4-6. În a doua dispută, Sorana Cîrstea a fost aproape de o victorie, într-un meci maraton de 3 ore și 22 de minute. Până la urmă reprezentanta Belgiei, Yanina Wickmayer, și-a adjudecat victoria, scor final 7-6, 5-7, 7-5.

La această oră se desfășoară meciul de dublu dintre România și Belgia, ultima partidă de simplu fiind anulată. După această înfrângere, România va juca meciul de baraj pentru a rămâne în Grupa Mondială II a Fed Cup.

El rumano Alin Tosca, de 24 años, fichado por el Betis Sevilla hasta 2021 procedente del Steaua de Bucarest, es el segundo jugador rumano que milita en el equipo bético después de que lo hiciera Iulian Filipescu entre 1999 y 2003 .

Pese al buen número de jugadores de Rumanía que han jugado y lo hacen en la Liga española -los Gica Hagi, Craioveanu o Popescu; Galca, Contra, Ilie, Dumitrescu o Florin Andone- el Betis ha recurrido a lo largo de su historia a dos futbolistas de Rumanía y los dos han sido para el centro de su defensa.

Tosca sucede así en esa posición a Filipescu (1974), que llegó al Villamarín a finales de la década de los noventa .

Procedente del Galatasaray turco, Filipescu se formó en el mismo equipo del que procede Tosca, el Steaua de Bucarest, tradicionalmente conocido por ser el conjunto del ejército rumano, en el que militó entre 1992 y 1997, y muy vinculado a la ciudad de Sevilla por ser el escenario donde ganó su única Copa de Europa al Barcelona en 1986.

El equipo bético se sitúa en el puesto 13 de la Liga .

El delantero rumano Florin Andone anotó el gol del empate para el Deportivo La Coruña, 1 a 1 con Las Palmas, en la 19ª jornada de la Liga española.

También anotó un gol el centrocampista rumano Nicolae Stanciu con su equipo Anderlecht Bruxelles, que derrotó al Sint-Truidense VV por 3-1 en la 22ª jornada del campeonato de Bélgica. Por su parte, el Standard Liege, el equipo del rumano Răzvan Marin, cedió por 0-3 ante el campeón FC Bruges.

La selección femenina de fútbol de Rumanía venció a la selección de Eslovaquia 2-0 (1-0), este lunes en un amistoso disputado en el marco del periodo de preparación en San Pedro del Pinatar (España).

Así, las jugadoras rumanas han mejorado un poco la mala impresión que habían dejado este viernes en otro partido amistoso disputado en España donde perdieron por 1-7 a la selección de Holanda, país que acogerá el torneo final de la EuroCopa 2017.

El equipo femenino de tenis de mesa de Rumanía se clasificó para la fase final de los Campeonatos Europeos 2017. En su último partido preclasificatorio la selección tricolor venció en Bucarest a Holanda por 3-2. Los puntos fueron realizados por Elizabeta Samara, Bernadette Szőcs y Daniela Dodean-Monteiro.

Rumanía terminó primera el grupo B, con el máximo de puntos, 8, seguida por Holanda con 4 puntos y Grecia, con 3 . El último enfrentamiento tendrá lugar entre Holanda y Grecia y el segundo clasificado disputará la repesca para para Luxemburgo, entre el 13 y el 17 de septiembre.

Por su parte, el equipo masculino de Rumanía obtuvo la clasificación para el torneo final del Campeonato Europeo. Este martes, los jugadores rumanos derrotaron a la República Checa, fuera de casa, por un marcador de 3-1, en el Grupo J preliminar. Dos puntos se deben a Ovidiu Ionescu, y uno, a Adrian Crişan.

Rumanía lidera el grupo con 6 puntos en 3 partidos. Rep. Checa tiene 4 también en 3 partidos disputados y Turquía tercera con 2 p. en 2 partidos. El próximo 7 de marzo tendrá lugar el último enfrentamiento Rumanía -Turquía en casa. Debido al reglamiento Rumanía sumará 7 puntos, lo que le garantiza la clasificación directa para Luxemburgo.

En el Abierto de tenis de Australia, la rumana Sorana Cîrstea cayó eliminada en octavos, en dos mangas, 6-2 y 6-3, ante la española Garbiñe Muguruza, séptima favorita. Cîrstea recibirá un premio de 220.000 dólares australianos y 240 puntos WTA. Otros 2 rumanos, Horia Tecău y Florin Mergea, perdieron en Melbourne en octavos del dobles masculino. La segunda edición del Romanian Darts Festival, el principal acontecimiento temático de Europa del Este, se celebrará en Bucarest, entre el 27 y el 29 de enero y contará con la participación de más de 400 jugadores profesionales de dardos. Bukarest: Nach dem Brand im Bukarester Nachtclub Bamboo haben die rumänischen Behörden ein Strafverfahren wegen fahrlässiger Sachbeschädigung eröffnet und eine Ermittlung eingeleitet. Der Brand, der den Nachtclub zerstörte, ereignete sich in der Nacht auf Samstag. Laut dem Gesundheitsministerium sind infolgedessen über 40 Menschen ins Krankenhaus gebracht worden. Sie seien gegen Rauchvergiftungen, Hypothermie und Knochenbrüche behandelt worden. Niemand habe Brandverletzungen erlitten. Der Zustand eines Patienten sei jedoch weiterhin heikel, so das Bukarester Gesundheitsministerium. Unter den Verletzten, die in die Bukarester Krankenhäuser gebracht wurden, befinden sich auch Ausländer, die meisten von ihnen israelische Staatsbürger. Die Brandursachen bleiben vorerst unklar, fest steht jedoch, dass der Nachtclub ohne gültige Betriebs-und Brandschutzgenehmigung funktionierte. Am Samstag hat die Polizei mehrere Personen verhört, die Behörden beschlossen darüber hinaus neue Kontrollen in allen Einrichtungen, wo viele Menschen zusammenkommen. Im Oktober 2015 waren 64 Menschen bei der Brandkatastrophe im Bukarester Nachtclub Colectiv ums Leben gekommen. Weitere 100 Menschen wurden schwer verletzt. Es kam folglich zu massiven Protesten der Bevölkerung gegen das korrupte politische System und zum Rücktritt des Kabinetts von Victor Ponta. Die Protestanten machten die Korruption für die schwache Umsetzung der Sicherheitsvorschriften verantwortlich.

Bukarest: Eine IWF-Delegation geleitet von Missionschefin Reza Baqir befindet sich dieser Tage in Bukarest für die ersten Gespräche mit dem Kabinett von Sorin Grindeanu. Die IWF-Vertreter haben bereits mit Finanzminister Viorel Ştefan über den Haushalt für 2017 diskutiert. Anschlie‎ßend sollen Gespräche mit Finanzexperten stattfinden. Für Montag werden Diskussionen mit dem Vorstand der Rumänischen Nationalbank geplant.

Budapest: Nach dem Busunglück im Norden Italiens, der das Leben von 16 ungarischen Staatsbürger forderte, haben die Behörden in Budapest für den kommenden Montag Staatstrauer verhängt. Der Unfall ereignete sich in der Nacht auf Samstag. Weitere 26 Menschen wurden verletzt. Hunderte Menschen haben am Wochenende im Zentrum von Budapest der zumeist jugendlichen Opfer gedacht. In dem Autobus reisten Schüler und Lehrer eines Budapester Gymnasiums, sie waren auf der Rückkehr nach einem Skikurs in Frankreich. Die Ursachen des Unglücks bleiben vorerst unklar.

Sport: Die rumänische Tennisspielerin Sorana Cîrstea, Platz 78 in der WTA-Rangliste ist am Sonntag gegen die Weltranglistensiebte, die Spanierin Garbine Muguruza Blanco im Achtelfinale von Australian Open ausgeschieden. Ebenfalls am Sonntag sind im Herrendoppel die Rumänen Horia Tecău und Florin Mergea im Achtelfinale des ersten Grand-Slam-Turnier des Jahres ausgeschieden. Tecău und der Niederländer Jean-Julien Rojer, 11 Favoriten des Doppel-Wettbewerbs erlagen dem australischen Doppel Marc Polmans/Andrew Whittington. Florin Mergea und der britische Spieler Dominic Inglot, 16. Favoriten im Doppel-Wettbewerb, verloren gegen die ersten Favoriten, das französische Doppel Nicolas Mahut si Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Es gibt genügend Argumente die gegen die geplante Lockerung der Antikorruptionsgesetze und die Änderung des Strafgesetzbuches sprechen, sagt Rumäniens Präsident Klaus Iohannis. Er schrieb auf Facebook, dass die von der neuen Regierung geplanten Neuregelungen ‘ungeeignet’ und dazu bestimmt seien, einige Politiker zu schützen. Unter der Woche hatten Tausende Menschen in Bukarest und in anderen Großstädten gegen die geplante Lockerung der Strafgesetze protestiert. Mit den neuen Regelungen sollen einflussreiche Politiker geschützt werden, behaupteten auch die Demonstranten. Ähnlich lauteten die Vorwürfe von Opposition, Zivilgesellschaft und verschiedenen Richterverbänden gegen die Exekutive. Die Änderungen seien notwendig, damit die Überfüllung der Haftanstalten gemindert und geltende Gesetzgebung und die Beschlüsse des Verfassungsgerichtes aufeinander abgestimmt werden, behauptet hingegen die Regierung.

Anderthalb Tage nach einem Lawinenabgang im italienischen Erdbebengebiet haben Rettungskräfte in dem verschütteten Berghotel in den Abruzzen acht Überlebende geborgen. Nach Polizeiangaben waren unter den am Freitagmittag Geretteten auch zwei kleine Mädchen. Laut einer Mitteilung aus dem Außenministerium in Bukarest konnten zwei rumänische Staatsbürger, die als vermisst galten, lebend geborgen werden. Die beiden, ein Erwachsener und ein Minderjähriger, seien in ein Krankenhaus in Pescara eingeliefert worden und seien inzwischen außer Gefahr. Vertreter der rumänischen Botschaft in Rom hätten Kontakt zu den Familienangehörigen der geretteten Rumänen aufgenommen und ihnen die notwendige Unterstützung gewährt. Auch sei man in ständigem Kontakt mit den italienischen Rettungsteams, um aktuelle Informationen über den Zustand weiterer rumänischer Opfer zu erhalten, verlautete es aus dem Außenministerium.

SPORT: Die rumänische Tennisspielerin Sorana Cîrstea ist ins Achtelfinale der Australian Open eingezogen. In der dritten Runde des ersten Grand-Slam- Turniers des Jahres setzte sich Cîrstea gegen die Amerikanerin Alison Riske mit 6:2 und 7:6(2) durch. Als nächstes trifft die letzte Vertreterin Rumäniens im Einzel auf die Spanierin Garbine Muguruza. Im Herrendoppel gewann der Rumäne Horia Tecău zusammen mit Jean-Julien Rojer aus den Niederlanden gegen Matt Reid und Jordan Thompson aus Australien mit 2:6, 6:4 und 10:5 im Matchtiebreak. Das rumänisch-niederländische Doppel steht somit im Viertelfinale der Australian Open, wo es auf die Niederländer Wesley Koolhof/Matwe Middlekoop treffen wird. ANTI-GOVERNMENT PROTESTS – Romanias President Klaus Iohannis said there are sufficient arguments to prompt the Government to withdraw its ordinances on amending the blanket pardon legislation and the Criminal Code. In a message posted on a social networking site, the President said the measures are ‘ineffective and ‘targeted. On Thursday, protests continued in Bucharest and other large cities against the Governments plans. Thousands of protesters fear the modifications are targeting major influential politicians and lawmakers, aimed at writing off their sentences. Similar charges were launched by opposition parties, civil society or magistrates associations. On the other hand, the Government claims the modifications are necessary to avoid prison overcrowding as well as to harmonize the existing legislation with Constitutional Court rulings.

2017 BUDGET – The Government is today meeting to discuss the draft budget for 2017. The session will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Regional Development Sevil Shhaideh, who will serve as interim Prime Minister until Monday, pending Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanus return from Washington, where he is attending the official swearing-in of Donald Trump as President of the United States. Sorin Grindeanu said the draft budget will maintain the budget deficit below 3%. A delegation of the International Monetary Fund, led by mission chief for Romania Reza Baqir, on Thursday held a first meeting with Finance Minister Viorel Stefan concerning the state budget for 2017. At present Romania has no ongoing agreement with the IMF.

SWEARIN IN CEREMONY – Republican billionaire Donald Trump will be sworn in today as the 45th president of the United States of America. Attending the swearing-in ceremony held in Washington will be some 900,000 people. The businessman won the presidential elections after an election campaign marked by a series of very controversial declarations, as well as Russias alleged involvement in the campaign. According to the US intelligence agencies, the Russian Federation launched a series of cyber-attacks targeting the Democratic Party during the campaign. The swearing-in ceremony will be held against the backdrop of numerous protests in Washington, but also in Boston, Los Angeles and outside the US, in London and Sydney.

AVALANCHE – At least four people were killed and another 25 are missing in the wake of an avalanche that hit a Hotel in Pescara province, central Italy. The Romanian Embassy was informed that three Romanian citizens, an adult and two minors, were in the hotel when the avalanche hit, and has immediately contacted local authorities. The Romanian Foreign Ministry reports that Romanias embassy and general consular office in Bologna are watching the developments and remain in permanent contact with the local authorities, being ready to provide any necessary consular assistance. Meanwhile Italian rescue teams continue to search for survivors on the ground, although the possibility of finding anyone still alive is very low.

TENNIS – Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea, Romanias last representative in the womens singles at the Australian open, on Friday qualified to the round of 16 for the first time in her career. In the third round, Cirstea defeated Alison Riske of the United States, 6-2, 7-6, 7-2. In the mens doubles, Horia Tecau of Romania and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands moved past Matt Reid and Jordan Thompson of Australia, 2-6, 6-4, 10-5. In the quarterfinals, the two will take on Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middlekoop of the Netherlands. Also qualified in the quarterfinals are Florin Mergea of Romania and Dominic Inglot of the United Kingdom, who knocked out Julien Benneteau and Jeremy Chardy of France, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7. DIPLOMACY – The Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) on Wednesday announced that it took note of the statements made recently by the pro-Russian President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, during his visit to Russia. MAE sees Dodon’s statements as “inadequate and inconsistent with the political reality and the special relationship that Romania and the Republic of Moldova share”. According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry, “continuing the modernization and reform process as well as keeping up with the aspirations of all Moldovan citizens, require responsible actions and attitude.” On the other hand, according to MAE, “the EU accession of the former Soviet republic continues to be a top priority of Romania’s foreign policy”. Igor Dodon said, among other things, that “half of the current territory of Romania is Moldovan”.

BILL – The Romanian Justice Ministry on Wednesday put up for public debate a draft emergency ordinance that establishes what categories of convicts will benefit from pardon. The document provides full pardon for inmates with prison sentences of up to five years, except for people convicted for violent crimes and corruption. Also, people over 60, pregnant women, mothers with children under five, and people with incurable diseases in terminal stages will have half of their sentences removed, regardless of the crimes they committed. According to the document, inmates who have committed a series of crimes included in the Criminal Code would not benefit from a full pardon. These include crimes against state security, murder, serious bodily injury, blows causing death, forgery, bribery, influence peddling, drug and human trafficking, prostitution, slavery, child trafficking and pornography, and fraud committed through electronic payment and information system, to name just a few. The Ministry of Justice says that these provisions are meant to solve the problem of overcrowded prisons in Romania. President Klaus Iohannis, and the heads of the prosecutors’ offices are against the bill.

FOREIGN POLICY — The fundamental pillars of Romania’s foreign policy continue to be the consolidation of the Partnership with the United States and the consolidation of the EU and NATO, Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday at a meeting with the foreign ambassadors accredited to Bucharest. He added that Bucharest should further be a pillar of stability and predictability in the region. The Romanian President also said that Romania should increase defence expenditure of up to 2% of the GDP, according to the commitments it had made. In another move, Klaus Iohannis reiterated Romania’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s European path. He stood for a Brexit that should defend the interests of the Romanians living in Britain. Other priorities of the Romanian foreign policy will be the fight against terrorism and illegal migration.

IMF — A delegation of the International Monetary Fund, led by the head of the mission for Romania, Reza Baqir, on Wednesday started a one-week visit to Romania, to establish contact with the new government in Bucharest. The members of the mission are due to meet high representatives of the Finance Ministry and of the National Bank of Romania, the prime minister and other ministries who hold economy-related portfolios. The agenda of the talks will also cover issues related to the construction of the state budget for 2017. Currently, Romania doesn’t have a financing agreement underway with the IMF.

TENNIS – Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea qualified on Wednesday to the third round of Australian Open, the first Glrand Slem of the year, after defeating Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Cirstea will next play against American Alison Riske on Friday. On Thursday, the first day of the women’s doubles, Begu and Lara Arruabarrena (Spain) will be up against the team made up of Louisa Chirico (US) and Elise Mertens (Belgium) while the team Raluca Olaru of Romania and Olga Savciuk of Ukraine will play against Naomi Osaka of Japan and Monica Puig of Porto Rico. In the men’s doubles, Romanians Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea, playing in different teams, qualified on Wednesday to the second round.

Australian Open: Herbe Enttäuschung für Rumäniens Spitzenspielerin

Die Weltranglistenvierte Simona Halep war gleich zum Auftakt der Australian Open gefragt. Und sie war entschlossen, die Enttäuschungen der letzten Jahre bei diesem ersten Grand Slam des Jahres hinter sich zu lassen. Vor allem die Erstrundenniederlage gegen die Chinesin Zhang Shuai vor einem Jahr hatte geschmerzt. Doch auch diesmal hatte Halep mit Shelby Rogers aus den USA in der Rod-Laver-Arena eine stark aufspielende Gegnerin. Anders als bei ihrer bislang einzigen Direktbegegnung 2015 dominierte diesmal Rogers die Partie von Anfang bis Ende. Halep erkämpfte sich eine einzige Breakchance, die sie aber nicht verwerten konnte. Ihre stärkste Waffe, die schnellen Bewegungen auf dem Platz, schien heute eingeschränkt, am Ende schied die Rumänin mit 3:6 und 1:6 aus. Erneut habe sie Schmerzen im linken Knie gespürt, sagte eine sichtlich enttäuschte Halep bei der Pressekonferenz. Also konnte die 25-Jährige Rumänin auch diesmal ihre Bestleistung bei den Australian Open, die Viertelfinalteilnahmen von 2014 und 2015, nicht übertrumpfen. In beiden Fällen sei sie an ihrer Nervenschwäche gescheitert, hatte sie der offiziellen Webseite der WTA im Vorfeld des Turniers verraten. Doch gegen Shuai vor einem Jahr und auch heute sei dies nicht der Fall gewesen, räumte Halep ein.

Zur gleichen Zeit wie Halep gab auch die Weltranglisten-30., Irina Camelia Begu, ihr diesjähriges Debüt bei den Australian Open. Die Partie gegen die Nummer 41. der Rankings, die für Kasachstan spielende Russin Jaroslawa Schwedowa, fand allerdings auf einem Nebenplatz statt. Die beiden hatten sich die Siege bei ihren zwei bisherigen Begegnungen geteilt, jedoch waren diese jeweils auf Sand austragen worden, zuletzt behielt Begu 2015 in Charleston die Oberhand. Auf einem der Hartplätze in Melbourne gewann Schwedowa, die von Ex-Halep-Trainer Victor Ionita gecoacht wird, den ersten Satz mit 7:5. Doch dann drehte Begu die Partie zu ihren Gunsten und gewann die nächsten beiden Sätze mit 6:3 und 6:4. In Runde zwei trifft sie auf die Tschechin Krystina Pliskova.

Ein schweres Los hatte Patricia Maria Ţig erwischt: Die derzeitige Nummer 108 der Welt spielte wie ihre beiden Landsfrauen ebenfalls ab 11 Uhr Lokalzeit, ihre Gegnerin war aber keine andere als die Olympiasiegerin von Rio, die Puertoricanerin Monica Puig. Die 22-jährige Rumänin und die Nummer 46 der Welt waren sich bislang noch nie gegenüber gestanden. Ţig wurde am Ende aber zur bedauernswerten Sparring-Partnerin für Puig und nahm ihr beim 0:6 und 1:6 ein einziges Spiel ab.

Einige Stunden nach dem Erstrundenstart war auch die Weltranglisten-78. Sorana Cîrstea dran. Die French Open-Viertelfinalistin von 2009 versucht nach einer Verletzungsmisäre den Anschluss zu finden. Auch für sie war die Auslosung nicht unbedingt glücklich verlaufen, sie musste gegen die aufstrebende russische Spielerin Irina Chromatschowa ran. Die 21-Jährige befindet sich aktuell zwar nur auf Platz 92. der Rangliste, allerdings kann sie an guten Tagen wohl viele Spitzenspielerinnen schlagen. Heute war es aber Cîrstea, die am Ende jubelte. Mit einer mehr als anständigen Leistung fegte sie die Russin mit 6:2 und 6:1 vom Platz. Es folgt für sie eine richtig harte Nummer: die Spanierin Carla Suarez Navarro, die Favoritin Nummer 10 des Turniers.

Zwei der rumänischen Tennisspielerinnen starten erst am Dienstag ins Turnier. Ana Bogdan, die Nummer 125. der Weltrangliste, trifft auf die Favoritin Nummer 14. und 17. der Welt, die Russin Jelena Wesnina. Die beiden sind sich bislang noch nie auf der Profitour der Damen begegnet. Monica Niculescu ist nach der Finalniederlage in Hobart am Samstag auf Platz 40. der Rankings zu finden. Sie spielt zum Auftakt in Melbourne gegen die 18-jährige Qualifikantin Anna Blinkowa aus Russland.

Im Doppel der Herren können sich die beiden rumänischen Vertreter bereits in Runde Drei treffen. Florin Mergea und der Brite Dominic Inglot gelten bei dem Turnier als Favoritenpaar Nummer 16. und spielen als erstes gegen die Australier Luke Saville und Jordan Thompson. Horia Tecău und der Niederländer Jean Julien Roger sind an Nummer 11. gesetzt, sie treffen zu Beginn auf den Deutschen Philipp Petzschner und den Russen Michail Juschny.
