    Interview with Carrie Hooper

Today’s guest on our programme is Carrie Hooper. She was born blind, but
that didn’t stop her from going to regular school and taking not one, not two,
but several degrees in music and foreign languages. She discovered Romanian
while listening to Romanian language lessons broadcast – surprise, surprise -
by Radio Romania International’s Spanish and English departments. She soon took
a liking to this language, which she now actually teaches alongside piano,
voice and a number of other languages. Last summer Carrie Hooper also had the
opportunity to visit Romania, and one of her destinations was the headquarters
of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation. Hers is a story of perseverance
and fortitude in the face of life’s challenges and uncertainties. But let’s
find out more in this exclusive interview for RRI.

I hope you will be very well and
we are also very well. The Heald Club recently organized an enlightening

the English Service Literature post-200 words. This captivating event showcased
the rich tapestry of literary content that has graced our airwaves in recent
years. From thought-provoking interviews to captivating storytelling, the

    Human, nature, universe are
bound in these three cycles of past, present and future time. The future comes to the present and the
present becomes the past. Then one day
it is lost in the abyss of the past.
What is lost in the past cannot be recovered, but the future can be
remembered in the present. It is
possible only if the future is planned and implemented in the present. Some events, some history are in the past but
    remain eternally present. Like our
language movement, independence movement and freedom are never lost in the
abyss of the past. Everlasting Present. In personal life also there are some past
actions, some initiatives, some words, some love, which affect his present and
future. Makes life beautiful. In fact, today’s beautiful present is
    tomorrow’s beautiful past. Today’s
planned successful present, tomorrow’s bright future. Therefore, whatever is beautiful, whatever is
good-welfare should be done now. Last
    Sunday night

    2023 AD passed immediately after
12 markets. And the arrival happened in
2024 AD. January 1 is the first day of
    the new year. International New
Year. Many people mistake it as English
New Year. The Egyptians were the first
to discover the method of keeping time, but it was mainly during the Roman
period that calendars for counting days began to be used. Later, after various revisions and additions,
the current calendar was introduced by Roman Pope Gregory in 1582 AD. Hence the name Gregorian calendar. Later this latest version of the calendar was
    adopted by all countries.

    The British also adopted this
Gregorian calendar by passing a law in their parliament. The Gregorian calendar uses January 1 as the
first day of the year when the year begins at different times. From that time in 1582, January 1 is the New
Year. Since 1752, America and Britain
officially started celebrating New Year on January 1. Although the lunar calendar and some regions
have their own calendar, the Gregorian calendar has taken over the whole
world. So the appreciation and ceremony
of this New Year is worldwide. The
calendar is just an attempt to capture the ever-flowing time. And the flow of events, which we call
history, gets stuck in this table. The
world welcomed the new year with fireworks at the first moment of the new year
as soon as the clock crossed 12 o’clock on December 31. Rejoicing lasts till late night. Thousands of people dance and sing in the
    streets. The whole world, especially
Europe-America-Australia, organizes many grand events. There is no dearth of celebrating the
Thirteenth Night festival in our country.
What is the reason for this new year celebration, so many
arrangements? The reason for this is to
welcome the new year with new dreams and new hopes without thinking about the
joys and sorrows, joys and pains, hopes and disappointments, achievements and
    non-achievements of the old year.

The seeds of new dreams should be
sown in the new year. Between the
infinite future and the infinite past, the present is absolutely finite. Only the junction of two periods. The duration of the present is a moment or an
hour or a day or at most a year. So use
every moment. We plan for the current
year. Just as there is a plan of action
in the office and court in the state, so we need to have a plan of action in
our personal life. Many times in the
life of the family, one gets bored.
Nothing feels good for no reason.
So in the new year action plan, things to make life diverse, joyful and
enjoyable should be taken care of. Don’t
chase any unrealistic plans or dreams.
It’s good to dream. Because life
without dreams is not life. Therefore, a
sky-high dream that cannot be implemented should not be accepted. This will increase frustration. It is essential to have a budget for every
family, like a state budget. This budget
should be planned at the beginning of the year.
It can be yearly, monthly or weekly depending on the income. This budgeting is convenient for jobbers as
compared to traders or other professions.
The potential cost of children’s education should be kept in mind at the
beginning of the year. Funding for Eid,
Puja or any other scheduled festival should be given importance in
planning. For this the source of money
must be identified. Health care or
treatment is always neglected. We think
we will understand the situation and take action. But in danger many times that arrangement
does not become. So budget should be
kept in this sector. Besides, there are
some unexpected events or festivals where big expenses come up. So every family needs to create an emergency
    fund.

A couple of trips in a year
should be kept in mind to diversify life.
It is necessary to have a list considering the importance of the
essential things of the family, so that he can implement them in stages
according to the list. Planning is not
the essence of life. There is no reason
to think that just by planning everything will go according to plan. But planning will take any work a long
way. Ultimately, the bottom line is,
whether it’s a moment or a year, every moment of the present should be utilized
properly. Shake off Alsemi. Today’s work is not tomorrow’s. Create a mindset of doing today’s work
today. No more time wasted on
negligence. Only then will the future be
beautiful and it will become a once glorious past. Any beautiful dream of the present, any
beautiful plan, any beautiful initiative will be realized and bring a beautiful
future – this is our wish. Happy New
Year-2024 AD. I hope that my
relationship with you will deepen in 2024.

I was interested in the Radio
Free Europe journalist Monica Lovinescu’s story which could be heard twice on
this month’s broadcast. Once on The History Show and once on
People and Places. I sometimes used to listen to the programmes of
Radio Free Europe in the 1960’s when I was a high school student. Among them, the Romanian and Polish
broadcasts were heard relatively well, despite heavy jamming. Unfortunately, I could not understand either
    language.

Now, I know that she was working
for Radio Free Europe at that time.

In any case, listening to the
programmes I was strongly impressed by her courageous behaviour.

    Hellooo Fellow
    Persons of Planet Earth,

Thanks for sending the eQSL (just
printed it here @ the local library). So-you are most likely even More aware
(than me) of Our very own Sun spewing… electromagnetic KRAP!!! * at us &
thus messin’ with your xmit.s. Lately your signal intended for the east coast
is stronger (more-or-less) than the 0400gmt. In fact, often the 0400 isn’t
there, period! Who knows when the atmosphere will clean itself from the sun’s
    diarrhea!

Anyway, I will be viewing Rick
Steve’s dvd 10 New Shows 2017-2018 which includes a visit to your
home country. Plus I’m also gonna check-out (for a second time) Cultures
of the World: Romania, Cavendish Square Press, 2016. Gonna give it a more
thorough look. If you got any book suggestions gimme a shout (You can see what
    sno-isle.org has). Being in my mid-70’s & a cold-war survivor
I’m always reading history & paying attention to The Now! So to speak. Any
way, Happy Holidays to you & yours.

I hope that everyone at your
radio is keeping in good health and no doubt you have already started to
prepare for the arrival of Christmas.
With the beginning of Advent, some people here in the U.K. have already
put up coloured lights and trees in their homes. Others wait until about two weeks before
Christmas. The shops have been selling
Christmas foods, such as puddings, mince pies and cakes already, and many
people have been out and about buying gifts.

    Celebrating Christmas in Romania
because of the customs and traditions, is a little different to ours. It is unusual in that children open their
gifts already late December 5 or on the following morning. Carol singing takes place on December 24 as
it does here. When I was younger, we
often had singers call at our house on that day, but in recent years this
tradition is no longer as popular, which is a great pity.

I sure wish I could sample some
of the Romanian foods that are popular over the festive period. I am very fond of eating cakes and I think I
would really enjoy the many different varieties of cakes, sweets and desserts
that are produced especially for the holiday.

    Listening to RRI has become
almost a daily routine for me, not only because of the quality of your
programming, but the reception is consistently perfect in my area of the world.

I wish you all a very peaceful,
safe and a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2024.

Your English transmissions are still very much as ever an
essential source of news and information that I rely on everyday in order to be
kept up to date with what’s going on in Romania. Bucharest has a lot to
offer that is jammed packed with history along with some incredible
architecture that would appeal to any visitor. The palace of
parliament I find still very eerie, but in a fascinating way, if that
at all makes any sense. Everytime I catch a glimpse of it here in the UK on television
I just stand and stare as I find it so captivating, I think about the time and
cost that went into building it, to equally what had to be removed to make way
for it which saddens me. In the summer months I have enjoyed viewing the
performance of lights that seem to go in sequence at the Bucur fountain in
Piata Unirii while listening to Radio Romania International
in the background, a perfect way to end the day. I wish all your
listeners as well as you all in the English section that make it all happen,
and make it sound so easy even though I know it is not, good health a very
Merry Christmas, and a prosperous new year!

  • The effects of global changes on strategic planning – how to best navigate challenges in 2024

The effects of global changes on strategic planning – how to best navigate challenges in 2024

After the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine, we get a sense that
every sector is now exposed to geopolitical events that might have seemed
distant in the past. Organizations that may not have paid attention before are
forced to do so now, or risk being caught off guard by disruptions that
threaten their business. Without improved governance at the global and national
levels, the world risks sleepwalking into widespread chaos, as the health,
energy and political crises of recent years have shown.

We’re thus looking at ways to best navigate disruptive futures as devised by Global Foreseight Strategies, a company that attended a Forum in Bucharest organized by Aspen Institute Romania and Global Marshall Fund.

    Mail Roundup – December 8, 2023

    Hello everyone!

Another two weeks have passed and before long the Winter Holidays will be
upon us! Preparations are underway across Romania, with local municipalities
lighting up the streets and buildings, shopping centers getting packed on
weekends and traffic being an overall headache J

We’re keeping busy here at the English Department as well – as some of you
have noticed, we have started sending out eQSLs for 2023. Unfortunately, we are
unable to fill in the QSLs with the information this year. Let’s hope our
budget will allow us to print them next year and send them to you the
    traditional way.

Meanwhile don’t forget about our traditional end-of-year quiz about the
Personality of the Year 2023. We’ve already received some contributions, but we’re
looking forward to know everyone’s opinion.

Also, don’t forget to check the Listeners’ Corner section for regular
    updates.

I have been a regular listener
to RRI on SW for some years. Reception is usually good to very good here, but
sometimes affected by atmospheric conditions, of course. The telescopic whip
antenna is usually quite enough. I do not have Internet access at the moment,
but I do like the convenience of just putting on a radio. Your broadcast in
English is nicely varied. It is astonishing how many things you cover in a
single broadcast. Obviously, a lot of thought put into in. Thank you for this.
I wish all at Radio Romania International the best of health.

    I thought I would try a

    After a rainy
and windy autumn here the weather has now changed completely. The past week has

    snowy weather).

    From the USA,
Larry Cohen sent us the following message, in memory of the December 7 1941 Pearl
    Harbor attack:

    Today is
December 7th, a Day that will Live in Infamy.

    My own father,
Edward (1914-2009) was already in the U.S. Army before December 7th and was
    scheduled to be discharged. However,
after we declared War on Japan along with the other Axis countries, all
discharges were cancelled and he remained in the Army until his honorable
discharge at the end of the War.

    As it happens,
my mother, Ruth (1925-2017) was on her way to a Chanukah Party in 1941 along
with her father (1895-1954) a day which happened to fall on December 7th of
that year in 1941. When they arrived at
the party. my mother said everyone was in shock after hearing the news that
Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Her father,
Benjamin, my grandfather, was a U.S. Army Veteran of Foreign Wars having served
in World War One (in the front) and my mother would say that he …was
never the same after that meaning
that he didn’t have much religious faith.
He saw too much she would add.

    We must never
forget we are only free because of those that fought in our Wars against the
forces that would end our Democracy.
Given the chance, they, our enemies, would do it again. We must always be vigilant and prepared. We do not want war which is why we must be
    prepared for War.

    Finally, we must
also be vigilant and prepared for those that would threaten our Democracy from
within. Those forces come in many
    shapes, designs, and disguises. However,
they can be even more dangerous, more insidious and more nefarious than the
enemy who comes wearing a uniform.

    Thanks for
    sharing this with us, Larry!
