A feature film entitled, “Three kilometers to the end of the world”, directed by Emanuel Pârvu, was premiered in the main competition, and presents the story of Adi, a 17 year old teenager from a remote Danube Delta village.

When his parents are confronted with a truth they cannot understand, the unconditional love Adi was supposed to get from them, vanishes in thin air and the hero is left only one alternative.

The film was received with standing ovations by the public in Cannes while reviews were laudatory about the Romanian production and its director: “Three kilometers to the end of the world” is the third feature film by director Emanuel Pârvu, after his debut with “Meda or the not so bright side of things”, (2017) and “Morocco”, which was premiered at the San Sebastian festival in 2021. “The Main Competition in Cannes is something that you dream of your entire life as a director, the place where you want your films to be seen, the place where you want to be. There are so many ‘ways’ you can get to – from the film’s idea to the script, locations and the shooting per se or the editing, that you don’t even know exactly how everything comes together, you know. Lots of thanks to all those involved; we made up a great team and here is our first recognition,” director Emanuel Parvu went on to say.

Another Romanian film, NASTY, directed by Cristian Pascariu, Tudor D. Popescu and Tudor Giurgiu, has been presented at the “Special Screening” section. This feature film portrays the legendary tennis player Ilie Năstase, the first rebel in the history of tennis who compelled recognition in both domestic and international competitions back in the 70s topping the ATP rankings shortly after its creation.

Ilie Năstase has also been received with standing ovations at Cannes. According to the documentary director Tudor Giurgiu, the selection of this production at Cannes is an extraordinary thing. “Ilie Năstase is as much loved in France as in Romania. And the inclusion of this production in the festival is a recognition of our work as a team and proof of the fact that you can get selected with a movie that is not necessarily in the author-cinema line, Tudor Giurgiu went on to say.”

The Festival’s 2024 edition is this year including a premiere, an immersive competition’ devoted to Virtual Reality productions and among those vying for a prize there is also a Romanian production entitled – ”Human Violins: Prelude”. Created by artist Ioana Mischie, the film is inspired from the tragic events of the Holocaust, as many Jews were allowed to take only one thing with them to the concentration camps and many chose their violins.

Protests – Trade unionists from several public institutions and governmental organizations protested on Thursday in front of the headquarters of the Romanian Government. They complained about wage inequities and discrimination in their fields of activity. These are employees from Environmental Protection domain, the Trade Register, the National Archives, the National Council for Combating Discrimination, as well as from the Sports and Youth domains. They were joined by a few employees from the government’s working apparatus, who started a spontaneous protest, stopping their  activity. In the meantime, the Government adopted an emergency ordinance that provides for 10% salary increases, in two installments, and the covering of costs for eyeglasses for several categories of employees in institutions under its authority, ministries or under the control of Parliament, including for some of those who were at the rally on Thursday. However, the offered increase displeases some of the protesters, who consider it too small. The Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu told them that for the institutions in question, more flexible staff structure solutions can be found, and from the savings made, the salaries of those who deserve it can be increased.

Salaries – The minimum gross salary in Romania will increase to 3,700 lei (almost 744 Euros) from July 1, and the facility granted to employers regarding the 200 lei (about 40 Euros) exempted from taxes will be kept until the end of the year. The decision was announced by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu in a Facebook post, after the conclusion of the Tripartite Council: Government – employers – unions. The Prime Minister said that in this way, Romania is on the right track for the implementation of the European minimum wage.

Exhibition – The regional military equipment exhibition “Black Sea Defense and Aerospace” 2024 takes place, until Friday, in Bucharest. Forum – Romania openly supports the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in their European aspirations and the progress of these two countries on the path of reforms is visible, but ‘this road is not easy at all, the speaker of the Senate, Nicolae Ciucă, said Thursday in Bucharest in the framework of the “Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum”. He mentioned that the two countries must work on several clear lines of action, so as to integrate into the EU. Officials, military diplomats and analysts from Romania, the United States and other NATO and EU countries gathered in Bucharest for this important security, defense and foreign policy event. The “Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum”, now in its eighth edition, debates topics related to developments in the Black Sea region, in the context of the war in Ukraine. George Scutaru, general director and founding member of the New Strategy Center Romania, organizer of the event, said that Romania, located on the border with a war zone, must invest in defense capabilities and adapt its legislation to the current situation. Among others, the well-known economist Nouriel Roubini, the former commander of the NATO Forces in Europe, General Phillip Breedlove, or the reserve general David Petraues, the former head of the CIA, participate in the forum in Bucharest.

The documentary film NASTY offers the public a captivating foray into the life of the legendary Ilie Năstase, the first rebel in the history of tennis. Ilie Năstase dominated the Romanian and world tennis scene in the 1970s. In addition to pure talent, he stood out through an electrifying style of play, and his eccentric personality and volcanic, often controversial temperament brought him special fame. The Cannes Film Festival ends on Saturday. (LS)

Study – The number of Romanian children whose parents went to work abroad is five times higher than the official figures show, and the local authorities need more information about them, so as to be able to develop programs to help them. These are the main conclusions of a study carried out by the “Save the Children Romania” organization for the south-eastern region of the country, where 57,000 minors are in such a situation. The data also show that almost 14% of children in Romania had, in the last year, at least one parent who went to work abroad, and those left in the care of grandparents, relatives or, sometimes, left to fend for themselves run a higher risk of dropping out of school, are more prone to emotional trauma and more vulnerable to violence and bullying.

Cannes – Two Romanian films are in the official selection of the famous Cannes Film Festival in France: the feature film “Three kilometers to the end of the world”, the story of the complicated relationships between a teenager and his parents, directed by Emanuel Pârvu, and the documentary “Nasty”, about the life and career of the first world number one in men’s tennis, the Romanian Ilie Năstase, made by Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu. “Nasty” will be presented in the Special Screenings section. The document shows that in 2023, human rights were affected by “serious government corruption” and the authorities sometimes did not do enough against officials who committed abuses. The report also shows that there is inefficiency and lack of accountability in relation to judicial oversight, and bribery was perceived to be common in the public sector. According to Washington, there are also problems in Romania regarding domestic violence and ethnic discrimination.

Court – The Constitutional Court of Romania is going to debate, today, the notification submitted by Save Romania Union – USR and the opposition Force of the Right in relation to the law for amending and completing the ordinance on road transport. The opposition MPs criticize the law, on the grounds that it would once again postpone the real liberalization of the road transport of people, in order to defend what they call the interests of the politically protected mafia. Today’s agenda of the Constitutional Court also includes several notifications submitted by President Klaus Iohannis. (LS)

ELECTIONS – The ruling coalition made up of the Social Democratic Party and the National Liberal Party has decided to back separate candidates for mayor general of Bucharest, namely the Senator Gabriela Firea, a former mayor of Bucharest between 2016 and 2020,  supported by the Social Democrats, and the incumbent energy minister, Sebastian Burduja, for the Liberals. President Klaus Iohannis said the decision to have two separate candidates running for the same post in the local elections in Bucharest was not a success for the coalition. The politicians involved say the decision was made in order to fully mobilise the voters of the two parties. The announcement came at the end of a coalition meeting held following media allegations that the joint candidate Cătălin Cîrstoiu was in an incompatibility situation. The physician is accused of taking advantage of his post as manager of Bucharest’s Emergency Teaching Hospital to treat patients in a private clinic. The coalition leaders also decided to keep joint candidates for the Bucharest district mayors and for the local councils. The Social Democrats and the Liberals also have joint candidate lists for the European Parliament elections, due on June 9th, concurrently with the local ballots.

In the presence of the two presidents, other documents were also signed, concerning cooperation in fields like defence, nuclear energy, investments, foreign trade and culture. AUTOMOTIVE The vehicles produced in Romania are in demand in over 60 markets in the world, so that 2024 may end with a new profit record, says Adrian Sandu, the secretary general of the Board of the Romanian Carmakers Association. According to him, in 2023 the domestic automotive industry saw a record output of 513,000 units produced. On the other hand, Adrian Sandu says that, apart from the inadequate transport infrastructure, Romania’s economy loses huge amounts of money because of bottlenecks in the customs process, due to Romanian land borders not being accepted yet in the Schengen area.

    Arnaud Desplechin a

Regizorul francez Arnaud Desplechin a declarat că a

‘Metronom (Metronome)’, the feature film debut of director Alexandru Belc

‘Metronom’, the feature film debut of director Alexandru Belc, which received the Un Certain Regard Award for directing this year at the Cannes Film Festival, could be seen in cinemas across Romania since the beginning of November. After the film premiere at the opening of the program ‘Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest’, the film was screened in more than 45 cinemas in the country and the public had the opportunity to meet the films team after the screenings.

The action of the film Metronom takes place in the 70s, when a group of high school students, fans of the rock music show Metronom aired by Radio Free Europe, write a letter to its producer, Cornel Chiriac. Things get complicated when Sorin, Anas boyfriend, gets the chance to leave the country for good with his whole family and the two lovers must separate. The cast includes Vlad Ivanov, Mihai Călin, Alex Conovaru, Alina Berzunţeanu, Mara Bugarin, Şerban Lazarovici, Mara Vicol, Marius Boboc, Mihnea Moldoveanu, Andrei Miercure, Măriuca Bosnea, Tiberiu Zavelea, Claudia Soare, Eduard Chimac, Briana Macovei, Pamela Iobaji, Ana Bodea, Alin Oprea, Alexandru Conovaru, Horatiu Bob, Alexandru Nedelcu, and Daniel Tomescu. We spoke with Mara Bugarin and Şerban Lazarovici about how they managed to impersonate teenagers from the communist period and about the challenge of playing the main roles in ‘Metronom’.

Anas rebellious and equally romantic spirit won the actress Mara Bugarin over and she grew attached to the character she played: “It was quite difficult to understand Anas inner strength and the way it emerges and manifests itself in the context of a rather oppressive regime. I tried to connect with the character and not distance myself from it, given that Ana lives in the 70s and I was born much later. I didnt want to look at her as a character without substance or to judge her, to somehow consider myself better than her. That was the biggest difficulty about the role and equally the biggest challenge. It was difficult for me, but also very beautiful. The scenes at the Political Police headquarters were also very important for me, where I had as partners two of the best Romanian actors, Vlad Ivanov and Mihai Călin.”

Next here is actor Şerban Lazarovici speaking about his role in Metronom: “I had fewer filming days than Mara and because I entered the project quite late, I had many discussions about the character and how it evolves with the director Alexandru Belc right on the set, before we started filming. These discussions helped me a lot and this is how I got into the atmosphere of the story, through long discussions that I had on the set with the small team of the film. Looking back, I can also talk about the things that make me different from Sorin, the character I played. Im sure that I wouldnt have reacted the way he did. It happened to me at certain Q & A sessions that people told me that I cant put myself in Sorins place, that I could not possibly know what I would have done if I was living during those times. However, I will stick to my opinion and say that I dont think I would have had his attitude towards the person I love, I dont think that I would have failed at least to warn her.”

We also spoke with Mara Bugarin and Şerban Lazarovici, who play the main roles in Metronom, about the audiences reactions. Here is Mara Bugarin’s opinion. “For me, the reactions of the public are very relevant and important, and the words of the spectators move me and make me want to continue, to keep doing what Im doing. I realized that the film also has a kind of therapeutic effect, it so happened that the viewers confessed to us very intimate events that they experienced during communism. And its very exciting that people entrust you with such stories, you realize that just your mere presence in a film whose action takes place in a time that you did not even live in, helps and urges people to say things that they have probably never said.”

Şerban Lazarovici believes that: “Indeed, the reaction of the public in Romania was very important for me too, especially because it is about a story that happened during communism. I was very curious to see how the public in Romania would react and what Mara said is true: at most of the screenings there are spectators who tell us about their experiences from their youth or adolescence, experiences lived during that period. And I find it very interesting that people have confidence in us, that their confidence is so great that they compare their own stories with what they saw in the film.”

‘Metronom’ was very well received by the specialized press. Variety considered it an intelligent and assumed tribute to a doomed generation of Romanians and noted that this stylized, slow and richly imaginative debut is much more than a Romanian version of the drama Romeo and Juliet. ‘Metronom’ is an exquisite piece of cinema, writes The Upcoming, and Cineuropa notes that in a film industry where filmmakers are rarely interested in female or young protagonists, the character Ana in Metronom becomes a true, shining symbol of a certain attitude towards life.

    festivalului.
