    INFLUENZA — The Health Ministry in Bucharest has announced that six people, including a 1-year old, died because of the same influenza virus that made over 50 victims in France. Romanian doctors have confirmed the presence of the A virus subtype H3N2 in over 170 patients, most of them in the capital Bucharest. In the beginning of 2017 a big number of cases of flu, pneumonia and respiratory problems have been reported. There are over 88 thousand such cases reported so far, one third more than at the end of 2016. On the other hand, two patients suffering from measles have died in just one week, which brings the total number of victims to 13 this year alone. The most affected category is children aged 1 to 4.




    FISCAL AUTHORITY– The Romanian Fiscal Authority (ANAF) has a new president as of Friday, in the person of Bogdan Nicolae Stan, who was previously head of the Control and Anti-Fraud Body of the National Health Insurance House. Bogdan Nicolae Stan thus replaces, at PM Sorin Grindeanu’s order, Dragos Doros, who has resigned following the Government’s announced plan to look into the activity of ANAF’s board. ANAF is accused of the poor collection of taxes and duties in 2016.




    ENERGY EXPORTS – The government in Bucharest has approved a decision providing, among others, for the possibility of banning exports of electricity in the event of a crisis between the 16th of January and the 15th of February. The decision was taken after energy minister Toma Petcu presented an analysis of the functioning of the National Energy System after six days of harsh weather, with record high consumptions of natural gas and electricity. The Energy Ministry in Bucharest said it also took into account the weather forecasts and the situation of fuel reserves.



    SUSPENSION – The director of the Romanian Intelligence Service Eduard Hellvig has ordered the creation of a special committee after information appeared in the public realm about his first deputy, general Florian Coldea. Until the information is verified, Coldea is in effect suspended from office, while his responsibilities are taken over by Hellvig himself. The decision comes after the former MP Sebastian Ghita, who is investigated in several corruption cases and who has vanished without a trace, accused Coldea of illegalities. According to the spokeswoman for president Klaus Iohannis, the latter had a discussion with Coldea before Hellvigs decision.




    ROMANIA-NATO – General Michael Flynn, who has been nominated by US president elect Donald Trump for the job of national security adviser, has hailed Romanias commitment to and role within NATO. In a telephone conversation with Romanias ambassador to Washington DC, George Maior, Flynn said NATO remains a fundamental alliance for the US in which all members must contribute to the common good. Ambassador Maior gave assurances that Romania would allocate 2% of its GDP to defence and consolidate the necessary capabilities.




    TENNIS – The Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu, no. 40 in the WTA ranking, has reached the final of the Hobart tournament in Australia, worth 225,000 dollars in prize money. Niculescu qualified following the withdrawal of Ukraines Lesia Turenko and will face the Belgian player Elise Mertens in the final. In the doubles, the Romanian-Ukrainian pair Raluca Olaru and Olga Savchuk have qualified for the final after defeating the Luxembourg-Latvian pair Mandy Minella and Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets. Olaru and Savchuk will next face the Canadian-Chinese pair Gabriela Dabrowski and Zhaoxuan Yang. Last week, they also played the final in Shenzhen, China, but lost.

    Tennis: Durchwachsener Saisonstart für Rumäniens Tennisspieler

    Das Jahr 2017 hat mit vier Rumäninnen unter den ersten 100 Spielerinnen der Welt begonnen. Vor einem Jahr waren es noch fünf Damen gewesen, doch auch diesmal kann mit ansehnlichen Leistungen gerechnet werden, zudem ist jede der rumänischen Spielerinnen für die ein oder andere Überraschung gut, wie es die Vergangenheit gezeigt hat.



    Die Weltranglistenvierte Simona Halep, die Anfang 2016 sogar auf Platz zwei der WTA-Liste stand, begann mit einem guten Auftritt beim Turnier im chinesischen Shenzhen. Gegen die alte Rivalin aus Serbien, Jelena Jankovic, konnte sie sich in Runde 1. wie bereits in weiteren sechs Direktbegegnungen durchsetzen. Diesmal benötigte sie für ihren Sieg gegen die Nummer 54. der Welt drei Sätze, 6:1, 3:6 und 6:3 das Ergebnis aus der Sicht von Halep. Doch was für die zweite Favoritin des Turniers vielversprechend angefangen hatte, endete mit einem Schock gleich in der nächsten Runde. Nach einem hart umkämpften Match gegen den aufstrebenden Jungstar aus Tschechien, Katerina Siniakova, verlor die Rumänin mit 3:6, 6:4 und 5:7. Ein wohl schwacher Trost für Halep: die 22-Jährige aus Tschechien zeigte mit dem anschließenden Turniersieg in Shenzhen, dass sie sich in Hochform befindet. Von Platz 52. schaffte sie einen Riesensprung im Ranking und rangiert ab Montag auf Platz 37. Für die Rumänin folgen im Januar das erste Grand-Slam-Turnier des Jahres, die Australian Open, sowie gleich im Anschluss das WTA-Turnier in Sankt Petersburg.



    Die Nummer 29. der Weltrangliste, Irina Begu, begann das Jahr mit der enttäuschenden Teilnahme am Turnier im australischen Brisbane. Dort unterlag sie gleich zum Auftakt der 19-jährigen Russin Daria Kasatkina mit 3:6 und 3:6. Kasatkina ist derzeit auf Platz 26. zu finden. Auch Begu nimmt als nächstes an den Australian Open und dem Turnier in Sankt Petersburg teil.



    Sich um zwei Plätze verbessert gegenüber dem Jahresbeginn 2016 hat sich Monica Niculescu, die am 1. Januar auf Platz 38. stand. Sie spielte wie Halep zum Auftakt der Saison in Shenzhen. Dort bezwang sie in Runde 1. Kai Ling Zhang in drei Sätzen und verlor anschließend gegen deren Landsfrau Qiang Wang, die Nummer 71. der Rangliste mit 6:7 und 4:6. Im Doppel trat Niculescu in Shenzhen gemeinsam mit Halep auf und verlor die Auftaktbegegnung gegen Natela Dzalamidze (RUS) / Veronika Kudermetova (RUS) mit 3:6 und 3:6. Die 29-Jährige will sich im Januar keine Pause gönnen und geht, außer den Australian Open in Melbourne und Sankt Petersburg, auch in Hobart an den Start. Dort hat sie die erste Runde bereits überstanden, nach dem 6:2 und 6:3 gegen Jelena Jankovic. Als nächstes trifft Niculescu auf die Belgierin Kirsten Flipkens (73.)



    Die letzte rumänische Vertreterin unter den ersten 100 Tennisspielerinnen der Welt ist Sorana Cîrstea. Die 27-Jährige ist nach einer Pechsträhne und vielen Verletzungen bemüht den Anschluss zu finden. Sie steht derzeit auf Rang 78. und schied in Shenzhen ebenfalls in Runde zwei aus. Zum Auftakt bezwang sie die Slowakin Kristina Kucova in drei Sätzen, um dann gegen die Hauptfavoritin des Turniers und Weltranglistendritte aus Polen Agnieska Radwanska sang und klanglos auszuscheiden. Das Ergebnis lautete 6:0 und 6:3 aus Sicht Radwanskas. Cîrstea will nach den Australian Open in Taiwan antreten.



    Bei den Männern sind lediglich die beiden Herren in der Doppelrangliste zu erwähnen: Horia Tecău (18. ATP) legte gemeinsam mit dem Niederländer Jean Julien Rojer einen langsamen Start hin. Die beiden verloren in Brisbane gegen den Kanadier Daniel Nestor und den Franzosen Edoard Roger Vasselin gleich in Runde 1. mit 4:6 und 4:6. Etwas besser lief es für die Nummer 25. der Doppelrangliste, Florin Mergea, beim Turnier im Qatar. Mit dem Briten Dominic Inglot siegte er über das russische Duo Andrey Kusnezow / Chatschanow mit 6:2 und 6:3. Im Viertelfinale unterlagen Mergea und Inglot den eingespielten Jeremy Chardy und Fabrice Martin aus Frankreich mit 3:6, 7:6 und 7:10 im Matchtiebreak.

    Tennis: Monica Niculescu schafft Sensation in Luxemburg

    Aller guten Dinge sind bekanntlich drei: 2011 und 2012 hatte Niculescu jeweils das Endspiel in Luxemburg erreicht und jedes Mal verloren. Im ersten Anlauf war sie der Weißrussin Wiktorija Asaranka und beim zweiten Mal der Amerikanerin Venus Williams unterlegen. Jetzt gewann die Rumänin endlich das Turnier und ist damit auf drei Turniersiege gekommen. 2013 hatte sie in Florianopolis und 2014 in Guangzhou die Trophäe erobert. Ab Montag klettert Niculescu auf Platz 37. der Weltrangliste.



    Es sei ihr “bestes Match in diesem Jahr gewesen! Und eigentlich…wenn ich Petra im Finale schlage ist es doch garantiert der Höhepunkt meiner Karriere! jubelte die 29-Jährige bei der Pressekonferenz nach dem Endspiel gegen die Tschechin Petra Kvitova, das sie mit 6:4 und 6:0 überraschend deutlich gewonnen hatte. Nicht zufällig wurde Niculescu von den TV-Kommentatoren in den höchsten Tönen gelobt, schließlich hatte sie gerade einer der derzeit formstärksten Spielerinnen auf der Profitour ihre Grenzen aufgezeigt.



    Kvitova hatte bereits in diesem Jahr gegen die Rumänin im Fedcup in Klausenburg den Kürzeren gezogen und in Stuttgart dramatisch gewonnen. Gleich zu Beginn der Finalbegegnung in Luxemburg sollte die zweifache Wimbledon-Siegerin merken, wie schwer es auch diesmal werden würde. Denn gerade in den Partien gegen große Spielerinnen wie die Tschechin richtet Niculescu mit ihrem einzigartigen Vorhand-Slice großes Unheil an. Der erste Ballwechsel endete mit einem rasanten Slice, den Petra nicht mehr vom Boden kratzen konnte. Den zweiten Ballwechsel gewann die Tschechin nur dank eines starken diagonalen Passinghots nach einem herrlichen Lob ihrer Gegnerin. Und genau so sollte der gesamte Spielverlauf aussehen: Kvitova musste stets die besten Schläge und bemerkenswerte Ausführungen hervorzaubern, während Niculescu mit unorthoxen Überraschungen den Spielfluss der haushohen Favoritin unterbrach.



    Im Laufe des Spiels merkte die Tschechin einmal mehr, dass sie sich nicht auf lange Ballwechsel einlassen muss, deshalb erschien sie im nächsten Aufschlagsspiel gleich vier Mal am Netz. Doch hier zeigte sich Niculescu an diesem Tag auch von ihrer kreativsten Seite und spielte nur selten zwei ähnliche Bälle in Folge. Das erhöhte die Schlagzahl unerzwungener Fehler bei ihrer Gegnerin. Die Rumänin führte schnell mit 4:1 im ersten Satz Dennoch fand Kvitova Lösungen, um sich für kurze Zeit zu befreien. Die Weltranglistenelfte kam bis auf ein 3:4 heran, auch dank einer Serie von sieben Punkten in Folge.



    Niculescu ließ sich nicht beirren und brachte ihren Aufschlag im Anschluss zu Null durch. Danach hielt sie an ihrem Spielplan fest und attackierte den zweiten Aufschlag Kvitovas in den richtigen Momenten. Zu den Zutaten eines wunderbaren Abends gehörten ferner unglaubliche Dropshots und eine phantastische Defensive, vor der die Tschechin kapitulierte. Bezeichnend der Wechsel beim Stande von 5:4 und 15:15, als Niculescu aus der Defensive heraus einen verheerenden Konter startete, den sie mit einem diagonalen Passingshot beendete.



    Nach Gewinn des ersten Satzes wurde klar, dass sich der dramatische Spielverlauf der Begegnung in Stuttgart nicht mehr wiederholen sollte. Im April hatte Monica drei Matchbälle gegen Kvitova verpasst. Damals sagte sie noch, dass die Top 10-Spielerinnen deshalb so gut in den Rankings stehen, weil sie bei Matchbällen gegen sie unglaublich konzentriert sein können. Allerdings war es an diesem Samstag nicht der Fall, Petra war gleich nach dem ersten Break im zweiten Durchgang völlig von der Rolle, sie schien erschöpft infolge der langen Sprints gegen den bizarren Drall und die variablen Tiefen und Winkel der Rumänin. Niculescus Freude war an diesem fast perfekten Abend ungetrübt. Auch wenn sie das Doppelfinale gleich im Anschluss an der Seite von Landsfrau Patricia Țig nach drei verpassten Matchbällen noch verlor.

    VISA AGREEMENT – The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis has announced in Brussels today that Romania reached an agreement with Canada regarding the lifting of visa requirements. Under this multi-stage deal, the Romanian citizens who have previously obtained visas will be allowed to enter Canada without such requirements as of May 1, 2017. All Romanian citizens will then be able to travel to Canada without visas as of December 1 next year. Klaus Iohannis has added that Bucharest no longer objects to the EU – Canada Trade Agreement. On the other hand, the EU leaders convening in Brussels carry on talks today regarding the Unions foreign relations, with a focus on the relations with Russia. President Iohannis says the bombing of Aleppo must cease immediately and humanitarian aid must reach the area. On the sidelines of the Council meeting, Iohannis had talks with the British Prime Minister, Theresa May. According to the Romanian official, May guaranteed that she would be personally involved in making sure there would be no additional pressure on the Romanians working in the UK.



    OFFICIAL VISIT – The Prime Minister of Romania, Dacian Cioloş, and the Defence Minister, Mihnea Motoc, are on a visit to Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina today, the Government announced in a news release. The two officials will have talks with the commanders of the NATO missions (KFOR and NATO Sarajevo) and EU mission (EUFOR) and will meet with the Romanian troops taking part in missions in the Western Balkans. They will also place flowers at the monument erected in honour of sublieutenant Remus Brânzan, who died during a mission to broaden the Gorazde corridor in Bosnia and Herzegovina.




    BUCHAREST RALLY – Organisers have announced that at least 10,000 people are expected to take part on Saturday in Bucharest in a rally in support of the Republic of Moldova joining Romania, with many of the participants coming from neighbouring Moldova. They believe that, in the current geopolitical context, the union of the two countries is the only solution for the ethnic Romanians, who make up the majority population of Moldova, not to be the victims of a Russian campaign similar to the one against Ukraine and for Moldova to reach the European democracy, lawfulness and prosperity standards. Already a tradition in Bucharest, the pro-Bessarabia rallies started in 2012, with the commemoration of 200 years since this province was first annexed by Tsarist Russia. Todays Republic of Moldova has been established on part of the territory of Bessarabia, which had re-joined Romania after World War 1 and was re-annexed by USSR in 1940.



    ILLEGAL MIGRANTS – Romanian border police Thursday night apprehended 7 Nigerian citizens attempting to illegally cross the border from Serbia in order to enter the Schengen area. The migrants said they had crossed the border on foot, in order to get into a Western European country. They are currently investigated for illegal border crossing. The Serbian authorities were also notified, so that they may conduct joint investigations and implement the readmission agreement.




    TENNIS – The Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu (no 51 in the world) is playing today against the Dutch Kiki Bertens (22 WTA), in the semi-finals of the Luxembourg tournament, which has 250,000 US dollars in prize money. Niculescu got to this stage of the competition after her opponent in the quarterfinals, the Danish Caroline Wozniacki, pulled out due to illness. Meanwhile, in the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament in Antwerp, which has over 550,000 euros in prize money, the Romanian player Marius Copil (198 in the world) will play Belgiums David Goffin, seed no 1 and currently no 12 in the world. In the second round of the competition, on Thursday, Copil had deafeated another Belgian, Steve Darcis.




    FOOTBALL – Romanias football champions Astra Giurgiu Thursday night won 2-1 away from home, in their match against the Czech side Viktoria Plzen in Europa Leagues Group E. these are the first points won by the Romanian team, which had lost their first two matches, 2-3, on home turf against Austria Viena and 0-4, away from home, against AS Rome. Also on Thursday, in Group L, vice-champions Steaua Bucharest drew 1-all against F.C. Zurich, from Switzerland. Steaua had the exact same result in their previous match, against Spanish side Villarreal, after having lost 0-2 in Turkey against Osmanlispor.

    OFFICIAL TALKS – The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, had talks with the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Thursday, on the sidelines of the European Council meeting in Brussels. After the meeting, the President of Romania said that Bucharest was interested in the future of the Romanian citizens living in the UK, particularly after that country leaves the Union. Iohannis added that the Romanians living in Britain must not be subject to pressure. In turn, the British PM assured the Romanian official that she would be personally involved in making sure that there would be no incidents involving Romanian citizens. The European leaders attending the Council meeting, which is due to end on Friday, will discuss, among others, means to manage the migration and the Unions foreign relations, particularly the one with Russia.




    SPAIN – Spain marked five years on Thursday since the separatist group ETA, which had waged a violent campaign for Basque independence for decades, announced the “definitive cessation of its armed campaign. More than 800 people were killed over the years in ETA attacks. Three hundred members of the group, which is yet to decommission its weapons, are still detained in Spanish prisons.




    TENNIS – The Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu (51 WTA), Thursday qualified into the semi-finals of the tournament in Luxembourg, with 250,000 USD in prize money, after Danish Caroline Wozniacki (17 WTA) withdrew from the match. On Friday, Niculescu is to play the Dutch Kiki Bertens (22 WTA). Meanwhile, also on Thursday, the Romanian Marius Copil, no 198 in the world, defeated the Belgian Steve Darcis (120 ATP), 2-0, in the second round of the competition in Antwerp (Belgium), with nearly 600,000 euros in total prize money.

    COUNCIL Romanian president Klaus Iohannis is attending a European Council session due to begin in Brussels today. High on the agenda are migration management, the EUs trade policy and foreign relations. President Klaus Iohannis has said Romania will support the EUs agreement with the USA, which could benefit both consumers and producers, but the agreement with Canada is conditioned by a reasonable understanding concerning a visa waiver for the Romanian citizens. Iohannis said he would also have a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May and talks would be focusing on the situation of the Romanians in Britain after the Brexit. European leaders are also expected to have talks about the relation with Russia, including its involvement in the conflict in Syria.



    FOOTBALL Romanias football champions and vice champions are today playing in Europa League. In group L, Steaua Bucharest, on their own turf, will be up against the Swiss from FC Zurich. In the first two games, Steaua lost nil-two in an away match to Turkish side Osmanlispor and obtained a one-all home draw against Spanish side Villareal. The Spanish are the first in the groups ranking with four points, followed by the Swiss with three points, the same as Osmanlispor and Steaua with only one point. In group E, champions Astra will be talking on Czech side Viktoria Plzen. After the matches against AS Rome and Austria Vienna, the Romanians have got no points. Plzen ranks third in the group with two points, while the Italians and Austrians are on the first two positions, each with four points.



    MIGRATION 14 migrants were held on Wednesday at Romanias southwestern border as part of the surveillance operations carried out by border police. The five Iranian and nine Iraqi citizens, including two minors, were trying to illegally cross the border on their way to Western Europe. The Romanian authorities have contacted the Serbian border authorities to investigate the event and take measures for their readmission. Border police in Romania have lately detained many persons who were trying to illegally cross Romanias southern and western borders.



    TENNIS Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu (WTA 51) will today be taking on Danish Caroline Wozniacki (WTA 17) in the quarters of the Luxembourg tennis tournament. In the second round the Romanian clinched a spectacular three-set win against Italian Francesca Schiavone (WTA 97). That was Monicas first win against the former Roland Garros winner. Also today in the womens double, Romanian pair Monica Niculescu/Patricia Tig will be taking on US pair Ashley Weinhold/Caitlin Whoriskey.

    Justice — Les députés roumains ont adopté ce mardi la motion simple intitulée « Le mensonge peut également tuer », déposée par les élus du Parti social-démocrate à l’encontre de la ministre de la Justice, Raluca Pruna. Les élus libéraux et ceux des minorités nationales n’ont pas voté. Dans le document, les sociaux-démocrates demandaient la démission de la ministre de la Justice en raison de plusieurs déclarations faites, le 6 octobre, à une réunion du Conseil supérieur de la magistrature. La responsable roumaine y a avoué avoir menti à la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme au sujet des fonds alloués aux prisons roumaines. Avant le vote, la ministre de la Justice a affirmé que son mandat n’avait d’enjeu de politique partisane. Elle a assumé ses déclarations, affirmant que personne ne pouvait lui enlever la liberté de signaler les problèmes auxquels se confronte la justice, dont le sous-financement. Même adoptée, la motion n’entraîne pas la démission de la responsable.



    Corruption — Les parlementaires roumains ont approuvé ce mardi la demande de la Direction nationale anti-corruption (DNA) de lancer une poursuite pénale à l’encontre de la députée Elena Udrea, accusée d’incitation à la prise de pots-de-vin. Les faits remonteraient à la campagne électorale de la présidentielle de 2009, Elena Udrea se trouvant à l’époque à la tête du ministère du développement régional et du tourisme. Ce mardi également, la DNA a décidé de mettre en examen, pour trafic d’influence, l’ancien président de la Chambre des députés Bogdan Olteanu. Entre juillet et novembre 2008, il aurait reçu un million d’euros de la part d’un homme d’affaires roumain pour intervenir dans la désignation du gouverneur du Delta du Danube.



    Tennis — Dans le premier tour du tournoi de tennis d’Anvers, le joueur roumain Marius Copil a réussi à éliminer, en trois sets, le Portugais Joao Sousa. Son prochain adversaire sera décidé par la rencontre Steve Darcis (Belgique) — Benoît Paire (France). Au tournoi féminin de Luxembourg, la joueuse roumaine Sorana Cârstea a été éliminée dès le premier tour par la Tchèque Tereza Smitkova, au bout de deux sets. En revanche, une autre Roumaine, Monica Niculescu, a vaincu la Belge Kirsten Flipkens et s’est qualifiée au deuxième tour.



    Météo — Les températures restent en dessous des normales de saison en Roumanie, surtout dans sud-ouest, le sud et l’est du pays.     Several world-class tournaments are underway in Asia right now. Last week the city of Seoul in South Korea played host to a WTA tournament totaling 226,750 dollars in prize money. Two Romanian players were seeded among the favorites. Irina Begu, WTA 23rd ranked, was seeded first, while Monica Niculescu, 55 WTA at the time, was seeded 5th. Also representing Romania in the main draw was Patricia Tig, 135th WTA.



    Irina Begu was knocked out in the round of 16 by Jana Cepelova of Slovakia. Patricia Tig on the other hand produced a big surprise by reaching the semi-finals. Tig brushed aside more experienced players, such as Marina Erakovic of New Zealand or the sixth-seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium. Patricia lost in the semi-finas to Lara Arruabarrena of Spain.



    Monica Niculescu on the other hand made it all the way to the finals, and she did so without losing a single set. In the final game the Romanian lost to Lara Arruabarrena of Spain in three sets, 0-6, 6-2, 0-6. For reaching the finals, Monica was awarded a 21,400-dollar check and 180 WTA points, also promoting us to designate her Athlete of the Week on RRI.



    Monica Niculescu was born on September 25, 1987 in Slatina. She moved to Bucharest at the age of four. She took up tennis a year later and turned pro in 2002. Her highest ranking in WTA singles was in February 2012, when she was 28th placed. Now she is 49th ranked in WTA standings, climbing six places after playing the Seoul final. In the WTA singles she was won two titles, in 2012 in Florianopolis and in 2014 in Guangzhou.

    Athlete of the Week on RRI – Tennis Player Monica Niculescu

    Several world-class tournaments are underway in Asia right now. Last week the city of Seoul in South Korea played host to a WTA tournament totaling 226,750 dollars in prize money. Two Romanian players were seeded among the favorites. Irina Begu, WTA 23rd ranked, was seeded first, while Monica Niculescu, 55 WTA at the time, was seeded 5th. Also representing Romania in the main draw was Patricia Tig, 135th WTA.



    Irina Begu was knocked out in the round of 16 by Jana Cepelova of Slovakia. Patricia Tig on the other hand produced a big surprise by reaching the semi-finals. Tig brushed aside more experienced players, such as Marina Erakovic of New Zealand or the sixth-seed Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium. Patricia lost in the semi-finas to Lara Arruabarrena of Spain.



    Monica Niculescu on the other hand made it all the way to the finals, and she did so without losing a single set. In the final game the Romanian lost to Lara Arruabarrena of Spain in three sets, 0-6, 6-2, 0-6. For reaching the finals, Monica was awarded a 21,400-dollar check and 180 WTA points, also promoting us to designate her Athlete of the Week on RRI.



    Monica Niculescu was born on September 25, 1987 in Slatina. She moved to Bucharest at the age of four. She took up tennis a year later and turned pro in 2002. Her highest ranking in WTA singles was in February 2012, when she was 28th placed. Now she is 49th ranked in WTA standings, climbing six places after playing the Seoul final. In the WTA singles she was won two titles, in 2012 in Florianopolis and in 2014 in Guangzhou.

Acum se situează pe 49, după ce a urcat 6 locuri în urma calificării în finala de la Seul. La simplu, are în palmares două titluri WTA, obţinute în 2013 la Florianopolis şi în 2014 la Guangzhou.

    Es hat nicht sollen sein: Rumäniens Tennisprofi Monica Niculescu hat den dritten Turniersieg ihrer Karriere verpasst. Sie verlor das Finale des Korea Open in Seoul gegen die Spanierin Lara Arruabarrena in drei Sätzen, mit 0:6, 6:2 und 0:6.



    Der kuriose Endstand ist für die Online-Journalisten von trezecizero.ro die logische Folge der wiederholten Strategiewechsel beider Kontrahentinnen. Im ersten Satz spielte Niculescu den klassischen Plan A – sie kombinierte die tödlichen Spins mit unterschiedlichen Balllängen und Geschwindigkeiten. In jedem der sechs Spiele kam die Rumänin mindestens auf zwei Punkte, die Spanierin konnte also kein Spiel zu 0 oder 15 für sich entscheiden. In den ersten zwei Spielen kam es jeweils zu drei Einständen. Für Niculescu, zu deren Hauptstärken die herausragende Geduld gehört, war es Business as usual. Doch auf dem Platz funktionierte Plan A nicht so gut zu Beginn dieses Endspiels.



    Arruabarrena schienen die Slice-Bälle am Sonntag nichts auszumachen. Sie stand sehr nah an der Grundlinie, nahm die Bälle schnell an und fügte ihrer Gegnerin mit sehr scharfen und kurzen Winkeln erheblichen Schaden zu. Außerdem schlug Monica zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht allzu gut auf. Der zweite Aufschlag wurde oft und gerne attackiert.



    Nach kurzem Intermezzo mit ihrem Coach, wechselte Niculescu nach dem 0:6 im ersten Satz zu Plan B. Und das bedeutet für die 29-Jährige, die eine exzellente Doppelspielerin ist, der häufige Gang ans Netz. Plötzlich schien die Spanierin wie aus dem Konzept gebracht. Ihre Zweifel verwandelten sich in zusätzliche unerzwungene Fehler. Und gerade jetzt verbesserte die Rumänin auch ihren esten Aufschlag und war selbst aggressiv beim zweiten Aufschlag der Spanierin. Mit einem 6:2 glich Niculescu aus.



    Der dritte und entscheidende Satz markierte einen neuen Wendepunkt. Das Finale wurde wahrscheinlich in den ersten zwei Spielen des letzten Durchgangs entschieden. Monica wurde das eigene Aufschlagsspiel rasch abgenommen, anschließend kämpfte sie hart um ein Rebreak. Es folgte ein kompliziertes Spiel mit vier Einständen und zwei verpassten Breakbällen für Niculescu. Arruabarrena erhöhte auf 2:0. Und die Enttäuschung für die verpassten Möglichkeiten war der Rumänin im weiteren Verlauf deutlich anzumerken. Es folgten vier relativ kurze Spiele, in denen sie zusätzlich am Ende ihrer Kräfte schien. Arruabarrena darf sich also auf ihren zweiten Turniersieg freuen, zuletzt war sie im kolumbianischen Bogota vor vier Jahren erfolgreich gewesen. Für Niculescu beudetet das Erreichen des Finales in Seoul ein Sprung von etwa 10 Ranglistenplätzen. Das heißt, sie ist ab Montag erneut unter den ersten 50 Spielerinnen der Welt. Für ihre Gegnerin vom Sonntag ist der Erfolg noch spektakulärer: Arruabarrena klettert von Rang 90. bis auf Rang 58. Hätte sich Niculescu durchsetzen können, wäre es der zweite rumänische Turniersieg bei den Korea Open in Folge gewesen. Letztes Jahr hatte Irina Begu sich hier die Krone aufgesetzt. In diesem Jahr war Begu bereits in Runde zwei an der Tschechin Jana Cepelova gescheitert.



    Und für die Nummer 23. der Welt wird es beim nächsten Turnier nicht unbedingt leichter. Beim WTA-Turnier der Kategorie Premier 5 in Wuhan kommt es in Runde zwei am Montag zum rein rumänischen Duell zwischen Begu und der Weltranglistenfünften Simona Halep. Zum Auftakt des Turniers am Sonntag hatte sich Begu einen harten Kampf mit der Russin Elizaveta Kulitschkowa geliefert, der Nummer 125. der Weltrangliste. Nach zweieinhalb Stunden ging sie mit 4:6, 7:6 und 6:2 als Siegerin vom Platz. Im zweiten Satz musste die Rumänin bei Stande von 5:6 einen Matchball ihrer Gegnerin abwehren. Gegen Halep konnte Begu in vier Anläufen bislang noch nie gewinnen. Zuletzt setzte sich die Spielerin aus Constanta beim Sandturnier in Madrid in drei Sätzen durch: 6:3, 0:6 und 6:1.

    Bukarest: Ministerpräsident Dacian Cioloş unternimmt ab Sonntag einen Staatsbesuch in Deutschland, bei dem wirtschaftliche Aspekte im Vordergrund stehen. Rumäniens Premierminister kommt in Deutschland mit Entscheidungsträgern der Bundesländer Bayern, Nordrhein-Westfalen und Baden-Württemberg sowie mit Vertretern deutscher Unternehmen, die in Rumänien investiert haben und mit potentiellen Investoren zu Gesprächen zusammen. Es handelt sich um den zweiten Besuch des rumänischen Ministerpräsidenten dieses Jahr in Deutschland. Monat Januar diskutierte der rumänische Premier in Berlin mit der deutschen Kanzlerin Angela Merkel. Deutschland sei ein strategischer Partner Rumäniens und der erste Handelspartner Bukarests, erklärte Cioloş bei Gesprächen in der deutschen Hauptstadt. Der bilaterale Handelsaustausch beziffert sich auf 20 Milliarden Euro im Jahr, so der rumänische Premier.



    Bukarest: Präsident Klaus Iohannis beteiligt sich am Montag in Genf am zeremoniellen Hissen der Nationalflagge Rumäniens aus Anlass des Beitritts des Landes an der Europäischen Organisation für Kernforschung (CERN).     Rom: 19 Jahre nach ihrem Tod ist Mutter Teresa von Papst Franziskus am Sonntag heiliggesprochen worden.     Tenisul se află, în aceste zile, pe prima pagină a actualităţii sportive. La Flushing Meadows, în apropiere de New York, se desfăşoară ultimul turneu de Mare Şlem al anului. Open-ul Statelor Unite, cel mai important concurs din tenisul mondial care se dispută pe ciment, a adus la start cei mai valoroşi jucători ai momentului, atât la masculin, cât şi la feminin.



    Anul acesta, trei românce au reuşit calificarea în turul secund. În prima manşă, Ana Bogdan a trecut de Sorana Cârstea, o altă jucătoare din România, cu 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Monica Niculescu a eliminat-o pe cehoaica Barbora Strycova, cap de serie numărul 18, cu 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, iar Simona Halep a învins-o pe Kirsten Flipkens, din Belgia, cu 6-0, 6-2. In turul doi, miercuri – confruntare directă între Bogdan şi Niculescu. Joi, Halep va juca împotriva cehoaicei Lucie Safarova.



    La masculin, din nou, România nu a avut niciun sportiv pe tabloul de simplu. La dublu, Florin Mergea, numărul 15 mondial, a ratat turneul din motive medicale, astfel că singura speranţă de a vedea un român în fazele finale se numeşte Horia Tecău. El este însă în mare formă, a ajuns în finala de la Jocurile Olimpice, alături de Mergea, apoi a jucat finala la Cincinnati împreună cu olandezul Jean-Julien Rojer. Tot alături de Rojer, la US Open, Tecău compune perechea cap de serie numărul 5.



    Este de menţionat faptul că, de-a lungul vremii, cele mai mari performanţe româneşti la US Open s-au înregistrat, totuşi, la masculin. Ilie Năstase a câştigat turneul masculin de simplu, în 1972, iar în 1975 s-a impus, la dublu, alături de Jimmy Connors.
